Having removed the silicone grip sleeve that wraps around the grinder and holds the crank, the grinder weighs about 8 oz. The crank is heavy thick steel, but does not flex at all while grinding, which means it's more efficient and less prone to failure. The crank arm is one solid piece with a pentagon shape hole punched out that fits the perfectly on the grinder and does not slip while grinding. The bulbous plastic handle on the other end is comfortable to hold and spins freely.
The conical ceramic burrs can be adjusted for fineness/coarseness depending on style of brewing. The burrs are adjustable by a nut that can be turned counter clockwise to open and with each turn there is an audible click. For Aeropress brewing, I've set mine to 7 clicks. The burrs can be removed for cleaning and putting it back together is intuitive (it's just not possible to put it back together incorrectly and ruin the burrs).
There are other mini grinders out there. GSI makes one, but the differences are they are mostly plastic and the cranks are flimsier. You do not want a flimsy crank. This is just a beautiful, functional and well-designed grinder. Yes, it's expensive, but I doubt I'll be replacing very soon and I intend to get lots of use out of it.
My recent experience matches the experience of other buyers in that it's not optimal for coarse French press grinders, but there's a hack for the machine that involves setting up paper shims around the fixed burr holder (Google "improving the Porlex"). Grinds fine to medium without problems. One advantage of the finer grinds in paper filter drip machines that don't deliver optimally hot water (190 to 200 F) is that there's more surface area for the cooler water (my thrift shop four cup Mr. Coffee has a working temperature of around 165 F) to work with and coffee ground a little finder than table salt worked well in a paper filter. I'm using Nicaraguan market beans that I've roasted myself to a medium roast.
The grinder is extremely easy to clean -- and the burrs are washable (English language directions are on line). The bean cup lid and the bottom grounds catch cup are pressure fitted onto the grinder body. Adjusting the grinder involves turning the bottom four winged nut clockwise to snug the burrs together, then backing off counter clockwise -- two clicks for espresso, a whole round of the adjustment screw for drip and Aeropress, and two rounds for French press. The grounds cup needs to be removed to make adjustments.
I believe the burrs are the same as one of the Hario grinders and if this is true, they can be replaced if needed later. Better prices through Amazon's vendors than through some of the on line coffee specialty stores.
/* Pros: */
>The grinder is made of stainless steel, so it has a satisfying heft to it. It seems very durable. The Hario Slim, by comparison, which I have held but not used to grind, is actually quite a bit larger (still fits in one's hand, though), and is mostly plastic.
>Compact size: it fits in the plunger of an Aeropress.
>Cleaning is fairly easy. Both burrs can be removed, and there are very few parts: The main body, the two burrs, the lid, the grinds catcher, and the grinder arm.
>I have large hands (like comically large), and using this grinder is not uncomfortable. I use the rubber sleeve that holds the arm for grip. The knob on the handle spins and is sufficiently large for me, as is the turning radius.
>Seems well made overall.
/* Cons: */
>While the burrs are conical, the grind is inconsistent, much like a blade grinder. I was able to stabilize the outer burr with a paper shim, and since I use this at the office or when traveling I expect a certain level of "roughing it."
>While the grinder does indeed fit in the plunger of an Aeropress, two important qualifications must be made:
1) You must remove both the grinder arm. At this point, the grinder will go in up to the rubber sleeve. The whole grinder will go in the plunger if you also remove the sleeve.
2) It is a tight fit. You may occasionally get the grinds catcher stuck, but it should come out. When I got it, I excitedly put it in the plunger upside down so that the grinds catcher was facing up. I got the lid (which has much shorter sides) stuck in the plunger, and it took some work to get it out.
/* Overall */
I'm only slightly disappointed that the consistency isn't better, but I was already expecting that anyway, and the grinder is so well made, sturdy, and usable that for the purposes of occasional use and travel, it outweighs that disadvantage. After all, I'd rather have inconsistent grinds from good coffee brewed to my standards than either no coffee or (perhaps worse) awful coffee!
