Best quality of this LP

I was in love with Boys for Pele from the moment I listened to it. Reviewers have complained that it's all over the place, but that's one of the things I love about it. You can be in almost any mood and enjoy at least a couple songs here at any given time.

Beauty Queen/Horses - A fairly mellow, relaxing song. Great way to start off an album that packs as big a punch as Pele. You catch more bees with honey . . .

Blood Roses - . . . than with vinegar. Which is what track two is. There's a lot of anger in Blood Roses. It's a good one for when you're in a dark place or in the mood to vent poetically. And the harpsichord is just beautiful here.

Father Lucifer - This is a weird one. But what else can we expect from a song inspired by Tori's hallucinogen-fueled spiritual love affairs?

Professional Widow - Widow is another angry, fast song. The sheer passion of Tori's vocals here is something that should be heard at least once.

Mr. Zebra - Kind of a wind down from Widow. Airy, light, almost childish. But in a good way.

Marianne - One of the most depressing songs on the album. You have to be in the right mindset to get through this one.

Caught a Lite Sneeze - Not one of my favorites. Some of Tori's finer vocal work, but not as interesting as the rest of the album. The good news is, it's much less heavy than Marianne.

Muhammad My Friend - A softer, breathy take on very complex subjects, such as religion and where the femminine fits into that. Or, rather, doesn't.

Hey Jupiter - Once again, you have to be in the right mindset. This is a very sobering song. It's one of the more heartbreaking songs about loss in my entire (extensive) CD collection.

Way Down - Along the same lines as Mr. Zebra, but I sense some much darker undertones in this one. Maybe it's just me.

Little Amsterdam - Possibly the moodiest, most straightforward story song on the album.

Talula - A breath of fresh air after the haunting Little Amsterdam. A jingly tune that brightens the mood of the entire album.

Not the Red Baron - A bittersweet song that, in my opinion, could have been a minute or two shorter.

Agent Orange - Another short, upbeat song.

Doughnut Song - The anger heard earlier in the album comes back, but in a sugary falsetto voice.

In the Springtime of His Voodoo - Confusing, faster song.

Putting the Damage On - Quiet. Lovely. Heartbreaking.

Twinkle - The perfect ending to the album. Leads them out of the chaos as gently as Horses led them in.

Tori Amos is my favorite artist, but this has to be hands down her best album and the best album of all time. This album has gotten me so many difficult times and the lyrics and music are incredible. Buy this and be ready to be moved. I am so happy i now have it on record because vinyls are the best!

In my view this album marks the peak of Tori Amos the artist. This album is experimental but remains true to her first 2 albums. She is on an awesome power trip from beginning to end, THIS is a liberated woman. I find the power and honesty and and and incredibly empowering, uplifting, inspirational. Its like the first two albums she was venting a lifetimes worth of frustation (especially little earthquakes). In this one she is expanding her art and flying high I think, which is why I was so dissapointed in choirgirl. She admitted choirgirl was a bit of a sellout meant to reach "the masses" with the techno beats etc. I don't think she recovered from that mistake of putting commercial interests above her art. I think she still makes beautiful music, but I think it is very sanitary, dull in comparison with where she was going here, perhaps a reflection of her fleeing the US to live in bland England with a husband who I've heard doesn't even listen to her music. In summary I think this album is one of the best I've heard in many ways and I wish Tori had had the courage and desire to continue on in this vein rather than the pretty yet dull music that she has made since that time....oh well nobodys perfect.

Boys for Pele is Tori's 3rd studio album, but it was my 1st. I was 16 when I bought this back in 96, and even though I had already heard God from her previous album, Under the Pink, this was my first immersion into Tori's world....and I haven't looked back since. After I listened to this I was in love and knew that I had found my soul mate lol. Of course I immediately bought her other two albums and every other album, single, DVD, and book that I could get my hands on since. I'm rebuilding my collection now due to a few life devastations but I have to say it's so much more fun now that Amazon has its own Tori store!!!! I cried a little when I received this album...it's truly my favorite of all time. I would highly, highly recommend anyone who wants to know who this girl Tori is to pick up a copy of this album right away!!!!!

Should of been a gatefold release or came better liner notes. Nothing fancy here.
