Based on data obtained from nearly 100,000 respondents, here is the ultimate resource for anyone who wants to learn the relationship-tested ways couples can achieve satisfaction and contentment in areas such as communication, sex, affection, and financial cooperation.

What constitutes “normal” behavior among happy couples?  What steps you should take if that “normal” is one you want to strive for?  To help answer those questions, wellness entrepreneur Chrisanna Northrup teamed with two of America’s top sociologists, Yale Ph.D.  Pepper Schwartz and Harvard Ph.D. James Witte, to design a unique interactive survey that would draw feedback from around the world.

What has resulted is the clearest picture yet of how well couples are communicating, romancing each other, satisfying each other in the bedroom, sharing financial responsibilities, and staying faithful – or not.  Since the
Normal Bar survey methodology sorts for age and gender, racial and geographic differences and sexual preferences, the authors are able to reveal , for example, what happens to passion as we grow older, which gender wants what when it comes to sex, the factors that spur marital combat, how kids figure in, how being gay or bisexual turns out to be both different and the same, and –regardless of background -- the tiny habits that drive partners absolutely batty.

The book is dense with revelations, from the unexpected popularity of certain sexual positions, to the average number of times happy – and unhappy -- couples kiss, to the prevalence of lying, to the surprising loyalty most men and women feel for their partner (even when in a deteriorating relationship), to the vivid and idiosyncratic ways individuals of different ages, genders and nationalities describe their “ideal romantic evening.”

Much more than a peek behind the relationship curtain,
The Normal Bar offers readers an array of prescriptive tools that will help them establish a “new normal.” Mindful of what keeps couples stuck in ruts, the book’s authors suggest practical and life-changing ways to break cycles of disappointment and frustration.

“A fascinating international compendium on women, men, sex and love that -- thank goodness -- busts some entrenched myths about men. In the book you’ll learn whether simple things such as reading to your partner can build deep intimacy, and whether date nights, compliments and laughter can truly keep love alive. You’ll also learn about ‘pet names’ and public displays of affection, and whether they spark romance. This book is scholarly, humorous and wise; above all, it gives superb advice.  Indeed, after reading The Normal Bar, you’ll have no excuse if your partnership isn’t a dream come true.”

"I'm obsessed with this page-turner of a book! After nineteen years of marriage, I faced divorce and entering the dating world with a whole lot of questions about what was and was not

I have worked in market research with a group that focuses on H&W and I have to confess that this book really wowed me. Often it takes digging into the numbers to find the "Aha" moments within a data set. Too many researchers collect the data but don't have the ability to parse out what is significant and present it in such a way that even someone who is not a social scientist gets it and can use the information to make material changes in both their long term strategic goals but also in the daily tactical actions needed to get there.

A quick, accessible read, chock full of tidbits that you can use right now! to put life back into the living you do every day.

I really enjoyed this book. It was easy to read and easy to relate to many of the thoughts and questions the authors pose throughout the book. The work appears to be researched well-enough and many of the conclusions or recommendations for reaching "happy couple" status makes sense. This is not a cure-all for what ails a marriage or relationship. It does provide comparisons to use when evaluating a relationship against norms for happy and unhappy as determined through the extensive survey performed by the authors.

My Book Club chose this book. Not reading the reviews ahead, I thought the book was just about the interesting findings from the surveys, and was pleasantly surprised that it offered tools for me to use in my own relationship. I could relate and even see similar problems in my own relationship from the case studies presented that I was intrigued to see if the tool (High Fives) used to help the couple(s) in the book would help us. So far, it has brought more insight and clarified misunderstandings my husband and I have had over our 10 year marriage. The book helped keep our conversations open-minded and less defensive, and has brought us closer together as a result. This is cheaper than and as good as our couples therapist was! I would highly recommend it!

I like the facts but the actual book is pretty boring to read. I wish there were better research on this but just know these are all from online surveys and things like magazines.

Chrisanna Northrup hit one out of the ballpark with The Normal Bar and I read A LOT of books! Personally I feel like I know more about what males and females truly want and desire in a relationship. Rekindling the romance isn't about giving one another material gifts. It is about the little things that count...the spontaneity...the surprise of doing something special for your loved one! I look forward to adjusting the bar in my intimate relationship with a man as well as in other relationships with my young children, my parents, friends, etc. Every one of us desires intimacy of some sort and it is up to us to work hard to learn what our loved ones need want and desire in this life. Thank you Chrisanna! I am passing this book on to my own family & friends and recommend anyone "stuck in a rut" in their current relationship to read this. It will open your eyes to brand new possibilities!

The Normal Bar: The Surprising Secrets of Happy Couples and What They Reveal About Creating a New Normal in Your Relationship
This is a MUST READ book. I could not put it down. I read and reread it, then I bought 10 copies for family and friends. It is nice to know what to do RIGHT in your relationship. The normal bar tells us what to do to be happy and keep love and romance from growing stale.

This book is unique, it is not just about sex-it is about loving, touching, holding, talking and having fun. I love reading something as inspiring and positive as Dr. Pepper's & Ms. Northrup's guide to happy relationships. Buy this book-you will learn something you can use to make your relationship better than ever!

I'm enjoying this book, it's a good go to when you want to know life is normal. It's one perspective on things and they make sense. It's surprising that from a large survey normal is not that normal anymore. There's a new normal out there in our techno age that's speeding by and evolving so quickly. This book keeps you abreast of the rest, so you don't feel so abnormal.

I haven't finished this book but after my husband and I had exhausted counselors a couple of times....got frustrated and almost ready to cash it in when I heard review on CBS This Morning from this author and thought I'd order it. It is easy/fun reading and very informative....and logical methods that others have rated and shows you a positive way to figure it out on your own if you follow the advise.

I hope to finish it this weekend and put the ideas of this book into practice. I sure hope this works....as I was reading it I was saying "yeah....that's me and that's why I've been so frustrated". Easily relatable to my issues anyway, perhaps it is common to manyand that's why it was so reinforcing!

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy helpful read

I am over 100 pages in and really like this book. It is easy to read and at the end of each chapter it recaps in a list the things you can try. A good read for people who can't decipher a clinical relationship book. Doesn't delve into psychological issues per se, but if you need to reconnect and don't remember what you used to do in the early years, this will definitely help.
