I contacted Amazon through their online chat and within 5 minutes I was advised that a new one was on it's way and my account had been credited with $10. I was quite happy about that. I received the new one a few days later, after receiving an email that it was delayed by 1 day due to a mechanical problem with a plane or truck. I had a bit of a laugh about the size of box the new one had been shipped in - it was huge, much bigger than the first one. They obviously wanted to ensure this one didn't get damaged en route!
Anyway, when I put this one up, I'm happy to say it works perfectly and it's a lot of fun. I read in other reviews that the darts aren't the best and that the flights fall out quite easily, and I definitely concur. I'm a complete newby so wouldn't have known that other darts don't have the same problem. So at some stage I'll buy some new darts. In the meantime it's not that big a deal for me.
My only concern now is that I received an email stating that unless Amazon receive the old non-working dartboard back by the end of the month, they'll charge me for the second one they sent me. When I went to ship it back to Amazon, I found that return shipping to the US was extremely expensive. The cheapest I could find was $90 US, which was at least double what it cost for shipping to NZ. However, I have confirmed twice with 2 different Amazon online chat people, that the shipping cost will be refunded to me, although I'll have to wait 60 days from when they receive it. The funny thing is that the 2nd person advised me that they'd received the faulty dartboard back already and everything was resolved. Very strange considering it was right next to me at the time. Anyway, I've now shipped it back and hopefully everything will work out in the end.
All in all, it's a great dartboard, and a lot of fun, and I don't blame Amazon for the faulty one and in my opinion Amazon have been great to deal with and would say their customer service is top notch.
I also noted someone complaining about the mounting hardware & instructions – they don't tell you that you will need a stud finder, drill and bits, and I added a bubble level to get things vertical and a small ladder. I chuckled when I read it because this is pretty standard stuff for hanging anything, and all available in my shop.
The problem started when the instructions said to drill a pilot hole, but not what size. Well, I've "eye-balled" drill bit selection countless times. It seems I was off a bit. (Pun intended.) When trying to reach the depth called for, one of the very long, thin screws bent a little. No real problem, until the other snapped off completely.
At least it was at the surface – I just left it, extracted the other screw, found a replacement in my shop and started over about a half inch down (and now not at the official height). I used a larger bit for the pilot hole, but the slightly bent screw snapped off at the head, this one extending about 3/4 inch – also lucky as it was easily removed with vice grips.
I have lots of well-organized screws left over from numerous projects in my workshop, but this called for a trip to the hardware store where I bought some #14x1 1/2 (button head) sheet metal screws. No it's not going into sheet metal, but these much heftier, steel (not tin?) screws fit well. I drilled a 3/16 inch pilot hole (eye balled again) the full length of the screw. No problems driving the screws or completing installation, only to find that I had to return the board. Recommendation – I leave selection of pilot hole size to Arachnid, as I screwed that up twice; but I would simply go with the replacement screws from the start. They are standard, cheap, almost as long, and much heftier – and require a large phillips screwdriver. Hey Arachnid, I would gladly have paid 25 cents more to avoid the installation hassles.
