I have a 15 year old stainless grill with ceramic parts that last forever, but the the three cast iron burners keep burning/rusting out. Even with brand new burners in it, it would barely heat up the grill, and if you turned on more than one burner, the flames got even lower. Even with new burners, it was pretty much a useless device on the back porch, due to the low flame.
Edit: May 22, 2015 Regulator still works as good as the day I bought it. So pleased that I bought this one rather than a non-adjustable variety.
I did all the "reset the safety valve" procedures, but nothing helped. I determined that the regulator was not delivering enough gas, but I did not know what the proper pressure for that particular 3 burner setup was, so I decided to get an adjustable regulator with more than just 10lbs of pressure. 2 days later (yes, speedy delivery from Amazon Prime), I got the new regulator. It was exactly as described except that it requires a 3/4in wrench for the fitting.
Once hooked up, it was an amazing difference. Better than new, the regulator allows you to much greater flame adjustment than the regular valves. The regulation is very smooth and predictable; considerably better than some air pressure regulators I have purchased. If you want a really hot flame for grilling steaks fast, just dial in a bit more pressure and you have all the heat you could wish for. Tiny flame to just keep it warm? Turn it back down. The variation in the flame size is much greater now than when the grill was brand new. One or three burners makes no difference now, the regulator seems to give consistent pressure at different flow rates.
Please keep in mind that if you have no sense whatsoever, it is quite possible to turn the pressure up higher than your burners can mix with air, so the flames will go big and wild inside your grill if you adjust it too high. The flip side of that problem is that your regulator can also be turned down too low to allow it to even light. An untrained/inexperienced grill operator might have big problems if they don't know what the adjustment handle does. Sloppy handling when hooking up a new tank can easily change the pressure setting, too. A lock-down feature of some sort might be a good addition to improve safety; these are present on almost all gas regulators for welding & industrial applications.
My hope is that the regulator will allow me to dial in slightly higher pressures 10 years from now when the diaphragm & spring inside begin to weaken. Not enough gas? Turn up the pressure!
I used this for the first time yesterday. It worked great. I didnt have any liting issues. It got 6.5 gallons of cold water up to 200 in about 30 mins. It kept a nice rolling boil on my batch for the duration. Very happy with this.
Most of the regulators offered on Amazon seemed to be designed for no more than two burners.I read the reviews on this adjustable unit, and saw other reviewers were using it for their multi-burner grills and liked it, so I bought it.
The box it came in very explicitly states: NOT FOR GAS GRILLS. The manufacturer has a line of grills as well as turkey fryers, which is what this adjustable supply line is intended for. I went back and re-read the reviews to make sure I had read them accurately before installing it in my grill against the explicit warning from the manufacturer that they don't recommend it for this use. Connecting it to my grill was a simple matter; the flare fitting it comes with is a perfect match to the connector it replaced.
After using it to grill up a party-sized ration of chicken fingers, I am satisfied that it works just fine for this application with the caveat that it has the capability of delivering FAR MORE gas than anyone would ever want and that careful adjustment is required to achieve the appropriate level. I learned this lesson on the first batch of chicken when I stepped away from the grill and returned to find all the latent grease from previous grillings ablaze, having spontaneously combusted after experiencing hotter temperatures than this grill has perhaps ever known before. After turning the gas off and allowing things to settle down, I was able to proceed without much harm to the chicken after dialing back the gas to a more moderate level.Once the level is set properly at the regulator, there shouldn't be any reason to tweak it any more since the individual controls of each burner can fine-tune the flame according to the needs of what you are grilling.
ADDENDUM (7/5/16): Now that I have lived with this regulator on my grill for a little while, I would like to update my review with an important bit of information. I continue to be happy with its performance. However, I have noticed that occasionally the safety shutoff activates in between uses. This is only frustrating if you don't recognize what has happened. It also may be the reason for many unhappy reviews. If you can't hear gas metering out when you are lighting the grill, and the grill refuses to light, then the regulator needs to be reset by turning the adjusting knob all the way shut and then back to where you want it.It has only happened to me between uses, never in the middle of grilling anything.
