Star Trek: Bridge Crew is a SIMULATOR. You even get to take the Kobayashi Maru test. But, again, it is a simulation rather than a more traditional game. You get to simulate being a member of the bridge crew of a Federation starship. You can be the captain (and tell everyone what to do), or be the engineer, helmsman, or tactical and have specific responsibilities at your station. Or you can micromanage and try to do them all. The entire simulation is from the bridge POV, so if you're looking for massive space battles, hand-to-hand combat, and pretty explosions this won't be the game for you. The VR is excellent. It is immersive, It is easy to grasp, but not a cakewalk to play. If you understand all of this going in it's a lot of fun and worth the buy.
Now if they would support it with PvP of ships, having multiple ships all ran by real crews would be a blast, as the AI is somewhat limited.
While this is an online multiplayer game, it also feels like an old-school dice-rolling RPG. By that I mean it relies on your teammates being mature, communicative, and cooperative, and thankfully 9/10 times its been just that. I have had a few younger people on my team who've been extremely polite, but you'll be finding yourself battling things like younger siblings threatening to turn console system off, or a parent calling for dinner to start. Not much you can do there.
The missions themselves can feel a little basic at times, I've seen more in-depth ones while playing the old Bridge Commander and Starfleet Academy games from 15-20 years ago. That said, I can see why the developers may have chosen to go more basic, given that the experience of actually sitting on the bridge may be a bit more than enough to occupy one's brain while playing.
The only reason this gets 4 stars instead of 5 are the glitches I've encountered so far. Sometimes you might get caught in warp, forever, or at times all of my teammates have seen different things on their readouts. As Captain I started yelling at my helmsman for not steering the ship when he in fact was. Hopefully these are things that can be patched.
Also, this includes missions on the original Enterprise which can be fun, but it ramps up the difficulty by 1000%. Imagine your keyboard being replaced with Jolly Ranchers and you can understand why. The experience of actually sitting on the original Enterprise bridge is a better experience than any gameplay you can actually get out of it.
Also, this game cross-platform with both the Oculus and Vive formats, which is a lifesaver in terms of online matchmaking.
Now. . . On the OTHER hand: THIS GAME REALLY FRUSTRATES ME!!!!! It crashes far too often. I was shocked to find it is so buggy after it's been out for so long. I actually have yet to play the game when it did NOT crash at one point or another on me. Seriously - that is a problem and it made me seriously consider returning the game. I decided to keep it and continue to send crash reports to the developer in hopes they are actually doing something about it.
One last thing. Don't buy this game anticipating many hours of independent play under the campaigns. You will be very disappointed if that is your gig. The game does have a few episodes of campaign play - I think 5 or 6 - and that is it. After that you may play some random scenarios alone OR with friends via multiplayer (which really is a ton of fun). I also recommend buying the Next Generation DLS so you can fly the Enterprise D around!
I would have given 5 stars if the developer created more campaign content (there are NO campaigns in the Next Gen DLS either which was a real bummer) AND if it didn't crash constantly.
