From the manufacturer
Lowepro Heritage
Lowepro was born from one daring mountaineer’s desire to capture some of the world’s most unexplored beauty spots, with just a camera in tow. Greg Lowe made it his mission to create only the best in innovative, cutting-edge equipment, to protect extreme sporting lovers’ cameras and cinematography equipment from the heart-pounding elements.
The humble Colorado garage beginning of the world’s first Internal Frame Backpack in 1967 pays tribute to Lowe’s enduring belief that he could be the one to design a close-fitting and supportive backpack to transport camera and recording equipment that had otherwise never been seen before. Climbers, mountain bikers, skiers and hikers could now comfortably carry their equipment to heights that only they had known, capturing intimate sights for the rest of the world to see.
Lowe’s first defying feat paved the way for the original Soft-sided Protective Camera Bag.
And with that, the Lowepro mark took off.
Ready for travel
The Fastpack II series is ideal for travel, business or pleasure. The next-generation pack design provides lots of versatility and enhanced protection: with a built-in All Weather AW Cover, trolley straps, removable padded waistbelt.
The Fastpack II series also boasts three primary storage zones, providing room for camera gear, a laptop and accessories as well as personal items in each of the models. A quick reach side entry makes sure you can always access your gear for when you need that instant shot.
Fast-paced. Easy Access.
The Fastpack II series is packed full of features to protect and transport your gear. A built-in All Weather AW Cover safeguards against rain, dust, sand and snow, whilst trolley straps and a removable padded waist belt provides ease and comfort when you’re on the go. Enjoy rapid retrieval of your DSLR with the easy 180-degree side-entry access to the camera zone compartment. Adjustable dividers provide storage of up to 3 extra lenses or flash units (see gear fit guide below for details). A security flap closure provides additional protection to outer compartments when on the move.
The open zone, an organizer pocket located in the upper half of the bag enables fast access to accessories and personal items. The dedicated device zone, with space for a laptop and padded CradleFit pocket, found in the rear of the backpack, is designed to fit a laptop of up to 11 inches or 15 inches in size depending on the chosen Fastpack model. An external mesh side pocket provides additional space.

The padding is thick and strong and I have quick access to my gear when I need it, but I can also hide the zipper pulls when I don't. There is a ton of space in the top compartment for everything that I need to take on the plane with me. All of the other little compartments and pockets will definitely come in handy.
One cool thing that Lowepro does: they have little photos of what goes where. If you aren't sure what the intent was for a pocket, there is likely to be a little picture to tell you.
Update March 22, 2018: I took the bag on a recent trip to Washington DC. It was fantastic! I had more than enough room for everything, easy access to my camera when I needed it, and it was very comfortable to wear. No problems going through TSA or Capitol Security. It fit under the airplane seat and in the overhead with no problems. This bag ended up being exactly what I needed for trips. I do switch my gear back to the smaller gadget bag for work.
Update July 3, 2018: This bag goes everywhere with me now. It wasn't intended that way, but it's just so well-made and thought out that it works perfect for everything that I have to do at work. The rain cover really came in handy last week. I had to walk across campus in a driving rain storm and my gear stayed safe and dry. Well worth the money!
My specific needs that were all met with this bag:
*A camera compartment that can hold a camera base and at least three lenses (or two lenses and a flash) + battery charger.
*Camera compartment side accessibility
*At least a 15" laptop compartment
*Chest and waist straps for light hiking
*Non camera compartment with enough room for items I commute with, like my wallet, e-reader, glasses case, and other various items.
*Rain cover (I especially love the rain cover on this pack because it is attached with a strap to prevent it from getting lost. It folds up perfectly and slips into a hidden bottom compartment.)
Overall this bag is very impressive. I especially love that the waist strap is removable because I don't want it trailing on the ground during my bus commute. When the strap is in place the Velcro is so strong you would not think it's removable. It actually took me a couple of days to realize it was. Also, the pack seems like it would be heavy because it's so well constructed but the design makes it feel lighter than it is once I have it on. With ample cushioning and ventilation in back, this pack is always comfortable to wear. The seems are very strong and so is the material. I expect this bag to last a very long time!
Even though the accessory pockets and mesh holders are not designed like some other packs, with tiny pockets for memory cards, I find the extra spaces in this bag to be very useful. I can easily slip my flat memory card organized in the front or inside pocket. The tripod holder doubles at the drink carrier and so far it works exactly as expected. I am able to fit my 12 oz. travel tumbler in it just fine.
I was able to fit my Godox V860ii, godox X1T trigger, Tamron 70-200mm G2, Canon 16-35 f4 L IS, Canon EOS RP with Sigma 24-70 f2.8 Art and L Bracket attached within the main compartment. I love that I have room on the side of the camera that my Peak Design slide lite strap will tuck right into. My smaller pack I have to remove the strap and put it in the top compartment. My camera does not appear to shift or wiggle, it stays put.
I do not find this bag to be too big (I am 5’2”), I got used to carrying the large DroneGuard I suppose. The straps are thick and well padded. I do like that the waist strap can be removed. I use it in hikes but general walking I likely won’t need it. I can also fit my Manfrotto elements tripod with Benro head in the designated tripod holder. Careful, the strap does fall out of the loop.
My iPad Pro with heavy duty case will not fit in the designated holder but it does fit in the laptop section. I have not tried to fit my MacBook Pro (13”) with the iPad. I do have 4 extra batteries, lens cleaning kit, flash soft box, extra memory cards, and 2 disposable rain ponchos with tons of room left over.

My basis of requirement: I have had a very many camera bags over the years (Lowepro Prorunner, Lowepro Slingshot, Billingham Hadley Pro, Crumper 5 Billion Dollar house, Crumpler back pack, Lowepro Toploader 75 AW Mk1 & 2 etc...) And I currently have the Lowepro Whistler BP 450 for outdoor and extreme weather activities which is awesome! but quite big and can not be taken on a plane as carry on :( Lowepro Whistler BP 450 Backpack for Camera - Grey Any experienced photographer will tell you there is NO perfect bag that fits all scenarios, so define yours before you search for your bag.
However this time I was looking for the following:
1. A bag that could carry and provide easy access to a Canon 5DMk4 + Canon 16-35 2.8L MkIII + Canon 70-200mm F/4L IS inc a 1.4x Teleconverter attached + bits and bobs
2. I wanted the bag for street and travel photography and I did not want to have to unzip the whole back panel and expose my gear to prying eyes or dust/weather.
3. I wanted extra space for a flask/water bottle, maybe a Gortex jacket, filters, wallet, keys etc...
4. I wanted a bag that does not scream "EXPENSIVE CAMERA!!" so semi discret style was preferable.
5. After shelling out 250 quid on the Whistler BP 450!! I set a budget of 150 Pounds for this bag.
6. I wanted a couple of extra pockets for bits and bobs
7. I still wanted a bag with a level of waterproofness if caught in showers etc..
8. I wanted it big enough for all of the above, but not too big that it can not be used as hand luggage on a plane.
9. Space for my 15" Macbook Pro or iPad (I wanted a pouch to put a Camelback water bladder for hiking when not taking a Laptop, its perfect even the zip is the right orientation.)
10. facility to carry a compact tripod (Gitzo Ocean Traveller)
I first tried the more expensive Lowepro Protactic 350 AW Lowepro ProTactic Camera Bag, 350 which is a great bag and well made, However it was too small for the gear specified above, a Full Frame pro bodied camera is too tight and a pain in the ass to get out of the side access , it has very limited additional pockets for storage of smaller items, taking out a second lens meant that I had to open up the back panel, it was heavier, and it looked cool but might draw attention, would really suit a CSC Mirrorless type camera, and although the 350 was on budget the 450 was too big and was too expensive, it just did not meet enough if any of my criteria, so as much as I liked the look of it it just did not work for me so I returned it.
Well I am happy to report that the Lowepro 250 AW II ticks all of the above boxes It can easily accomodate a 17" laptop if required my 15" Macbook Pro fits with loads of room to spare, and I am very happy with the bag. Side quick access is fast and easy for camera extracion but secure enough that there is no risk of the camera slipping out, it has a waterproof cover which can be deployed in seconds and its high quality construction with nicely padded shoulder straps and removable padded hip straps. (The straps on this bag are better and more comfortable than the Whistler BP 450 AW)
No camera bag is perfect for ALL uses (hence my long list of bags historically), So I would recommend listing what is important to you as I did in this case and try your gear in the bag. this was great with Amazon due to their great returns policy which made this very easy.
