In this inspirational yet practical book, the man Parade called “the most important coach in America,” subject of the national bestseller Season of Life, Joe Ehrmann, describes his coaching philosophy and explains how sports can transform lives at every level of play, from the earliest years to professional sports.

Coaches have a tremendous platform, says Joe Ehrmann, a former Syracuse University All-American and NFL star. Perhaps second only to parents, coaches can impact young people as no one else can. But most coaches fail to do the teaching, mentoring, even life-saving intervention that their platform provides. Too many are transactional coaches; they focus solely on winning and meeting their personal needs. Some coaches, however, use their platform. They teach the Xs and Os, but also teach the Ys of life. They help young people grow into responsible adults; they leave a lasting legacy. These are the transformational coaches. These coaches change lives, and they also change society by helping to develop healthy men and women.

InSideOut Coaching explains how to become a transformational coach. Coaches first have to “go inside” and articulate their reasons for coaching. Only those who have taken the InSideOut journey can become transformational. Joe Ehrmann provides examples of coaches in his life who took this journey and taught him how to find something bigger than himself in sports. He describes his own InSideOut experience, starting with the death of his beloved brother, which helped him understand how sports could transcend the playing field. He gives coaches the information and the tools they need to become transformational.

Joe Ehrmann has taken his message about the extraordinary power of sports all over the country. It has been warmly endorsed by NFL head coaches, athletic directors at major universities, high school head coaches, even business groups and community organizations. Now any parent-coach or school or community coach can read Ehrmann’s message and learn how to make sports a life-changing experience.

If you coach, have thought about coaching, or ever might coach ... you must read this book! Ehrmann is the authority on transformational coaching in purpose-based sports. Ehrmann asks reads four questions every coach, leader, and/or educator must be able to answer about relationships and our impact on others ... reflective questions we must all consider (I won't give them away here ... you really need to get a copy of InSideOut Coaching!). Ehrmann tells captivating stories as he shares invaluable wisdom that changed my life for the better and I am confident it will do the same for you!

One of my favorite reads. Very good book if you want to learn more about different views on the coaching profession
Reviewed in the United States on November 7, 2017
I have not finished the book yet, about 20 pages to completion. I can tell you the beginning of this book is painfully difficult to read. A horrifying event in his life that could have taken him down some dark paths.

I appreciate the absolute candor and honesty, albeit, sometimes just as painful (from the heart) to read. But you have to read it to fully appreciate what is being shared. To reach the conclusions he has come to, were found through pain and despair. An aha moment that lead him down a forward path, and teachable moments.

This book IS NOT for the first time coach, it is for ALL coaches especially for those with the win at all cost attitudes. It is a book about redefining the relationship between Coaches and young Athletes. It is about why you coach. It is a challenge to you to ask yourself, why?

It is a challenge to you to be a selfless Coach, to be a teacher of good character. Your job as a coach goes beyond just winning a game, your job as a coach is to help create healthy adults. Some would say, that is not my job. But if these kids are your responsibility for any time, 1,2,3 hours per week, yes it is your job.

I am not going to say that I agree with everything Joe says and that this book is now a core strategy for me. But much like the
The Matheny Manifesto: A Young Manager's Old-School Views on Success in Sports and Life , there is a great deal that I can take away from this book. 2 different people, 2 different upbringings, arriving at some of the same conclusions.

Both great books for different reasons, and I highly recommend them both. If you are looking for books that tell you how to dictate sports on the field, these books are not for you. If you are looking for personal growth as a coach, these books are for you.

Good read for coaches about being transformational instead of transactional. As stated in the subject line, the book was good but did get repetitive at times.

I do book studies with coaches and this is a great way to make them more affordable.

This is a great book whether you are a youth sports coach (I am) or (and perhaps more importantly) a parent of a youth athlete (I have 3 athletes 16, 14 and 8). It reads like a story with the content and lesson plan of a text book. In other words you won't put it down and you can understand and implement all of the ideas. My wife is reading it now and a teammate of my eldest recommended it to me.

If you have kids playing recreational and competitive sports in grade school through high school this is a MUST read. Especially if they aspire to play at the next level. I believe the insights in this book are going to positively change coaching and more importantly the results and impact of youth sports forever. Definitely the best $10.99 that I have spent on my kids and my kindle for iPad in the last 2 years.

I learned more in one season playing with Joe than in my other 20 years of football combined. He is the best coach, by far, I have ever met.
I just wish I could have met him a decade earlier.
This book is much more than a coaching manual. It is a guide to building authentic, intimate relationships, and I strongly recommend it to anyone.
Great job, Joe, and thanks for changing my life! Kevin
