Editorial Reviews

CD reissue. Poco are a Southern California country rock band originally formed by Richie Furay, Jim Messina and Rusty Young. Formed following the demise of The Buffalo Springfield in 1968, Poco was part of the first wave of the West Coast country rock genre. The title of their first album, Pickin' Up the Pieces, is reputedly a reference to the break-up of The Buffalo Springfield. This album was recorded on 9/30/1971 in front of an audience of mostly family, friends, and music company executives from Columbia. The band had just released the studio album From the Inside, which introduced Paul Cotton in place of Jim Messina. Cotton's contributions on electric guitar signify that Poco was headed in a more commercially rock-oriented direction. The set list is made up of material from the new album, with four more from Deliverin', and The Buffalo Springfield's "A Child's Claim to Fame" as part of a medley that also includes "Pickin' Up the Pieces. Poco was one of the most innovative bands of the 1960's and early 70's. Along with groups like the BYRDS and Flying Burrito Brothers, POCO pretty much laid down the template not only for Southern California Country Rock, but set the wheels in motion for the Rockified sound of modern Nashville. The Eagles admit that, at the beginning, the sound and performance dynamic they were trying to emulate was that of Poco.

But in those days before the success of the Eagles finally blurred the line indelibly, Poco was considered "Too rock for Country, too Country for rock." Although an amazing act to hear live, they just never had the hits. The albums the band left behind are a testament to just how good they were, however. The original lineup, formed by Richie Furay and Jim Messina from the ashes of Buffalo Springfield, made one live record (DeLIVErin') and it rings with energy, great songs and excellent musicianship. But the production was not good. In places, Richie's microphone is barely on while he's singing lead and the dynamics of just how powerful they sounded live are largely lost.

After Messina left, the band put out three excellent albums with his replacement Paul Cotton (Formerly of Illinois Speed Press.) If anything, they were even more powerful with Cotton. Certainly more rock, but still with that upbeat POCO style.

This recording was a live performance done for a crowd of studio people in Hollywood in 1971. I first saw Poco live at about the same time this was recorded, so it's basically the same live show I saw, minus their extended-length concert closer "El Tonto de Nadie." I remember this performance being broadcast on an LA radio station at the time, and I was thrilled to find it available on disk! I immediately ordered, hoping the live sound was as good as I remembered it being.

I can say it's still not a perfect live POCO record. There seems to be a problem with getting Paul's guitar up in the mix early on that leaves their foot stomping opener feeling just slightly anemic. But overall, it's a far better indication of what Poco sounded like live than the earlier "DeLIVErin" album was. And for anyone who was a fan of the band in their critical heyday, this is a truly great set. It features some of the best of the two records they were promoting at the time: "DeLIVErin" and "From the Inside," the former being Cotton's first outing with the band.

It's great to hear some of the key DeLIVErin tracks delivered with a bit more punch, and even with some extended soloing, but also really great to hear tracks like "Old Forgiver" and "What if I Should Say I Love You," both from the "From the Inside" LP, done live. From earlier albums we have two tracks: Furay's "What a Day" that opened the "Pickin' Up the Pieces" album and "Hurry Up" the great, rocking opener from their self-titled second disk.

IN all, this set includes five from the DeLIVErin album, one of those four being the three-song acoustic Medley and seven tracks from "From the Inside." It's about as good a resume of the era as they could have presented. The sound is good, the playing strong and you can hear the band loosen up as the night goes on. Paul may be the new guy, but his three songs are strong indications of just how important he would be to the future of the band. And, as usual, Rusty Young plays his ass off.

Why is this band NOT in the R&R Hall of Fame? Take a listen...

If I hadn't read a great review by an other Poco fan who knew enough to convince me that this was worth buying, I wouldn't have had the opportunity to re-experience the Poco that I loved in college, and bought LP after LP after LP until the band member changed so much that I couldn't recognize anyone from the original band except for Rusty Young. Then there were albums and CD's of compiled "old" Poco, some of which I bought (for example: The Last Roundup, Keeping the Legend Alive, or The Very Best of Poco). Nothing wrong with any of these, yet they were all tracks that I've heard before many times. It is nice to have them now that all of my LP collection and LP stereo components are no longer in existence (as you get old, material goods have to eventually go).
BUT: with this CD, "POCO, Live at Columbia Studios, Hollywood" It all came back and when I heard it, it was like the first times I experienced their music. This was made just after their fourth LP (
From the Inside ) had been released in 1971. The initial members of the band (Furay, Messina, Grantham, Young and short-timer Meisner)had transformed into Ritchie Furay, George Grantham, Rusty Young and new members Timothy B. Schmidt and Paul Cotton. This quintet performs a live set, recorded at Columbia Studios on this CD, as sort of a rehearsal prior to a series of major concerts with the new cast.
When I listened to this, of course I knew the songs, but they weren't the studio recordings I had listened to for decades. These were sharp, crisp, pure country-rock BEFORE there ever was country rock. This is the real thing and goes right back to the seminal days of Poco during the final LP of the Buffalo Springfield. Eagles, eat your hearts out! Poco never attained the national celebrity status or ratings that they deserved, they were the innovators, the beginning of a new sound: country-rock. From their seed grew the Eagles, Pure Prairie League, Loggins & Messina, CSN&Y, The Souther-Hillman-Furray Band, and many others.
I never found the talent, enthusiasm, happiness, that this CD captures anywhere. This is a piece of history caught live. Hear them again: new - I recommend this to Poconuts as well as music lovers who haven't become fans of this country-rock legend. Enjoy - - -

Great live set, with Paul Cotton replacing Jimmy Messina. For me, this was a must have. Poco always brought the energy, the skills, and the harmonies.
