I had previously been using QoR watercolors, which like Holbein are also superior professional watercolors and slightly more expensive. However, I desired a much larger set of colors so I could mix less often and also QoR tends to spread a lot wet-in-wet. This is not a disadvantage if you understand that this is something that QoR watercolors do and want to take advantage of that, but for my purposes a less actively spreading watercolor was more desirable. I also found out that Holbein was the preferred watercolor of director Hayao Miyazaki, so that pretty much sold it for me.
I judge watercolors according to the following standards:
PIGMENT INTENSITY: Just like QoR, the pigment intensity of Holbein is superior. These are beautiful colors. I might give a very slight edge to QoR on this, but that is probably mostly because QoR watercolors being pure pigments have nothing in them to add opacity.
TRAVEL/SPREAD ON WET PAPER: Holbein watercolors do not spread a great deal on wet paper, which for my purposes is a desirable trait. Those who love the chaotic effects of spreading and mixing colors wet-in-wet should get something like QoR instead.
GRANULARITY: This like many traits totally depends on the pigments, but in general Holbein watercolors are very granulating. Before using Holbein, I had no feelings one way or the other about the desirability of granulation, but Holbein sold me on the beauty of granulating pigments.
MIXING: Single-pigment paints like QoR are always going to be better for mixing, bearing in mind that some colors just won't mix into anything but brown and you probably shouldn't try. One reason why I bought the 60 color set in Holbein is because I wanted to mix less, but also I wanted to be inspired by the varieties of colors available. All that said, I have never had a problem mixing Holbein that I shouldn't have had, given the colors involved.
OPACITY: This again totally depends on the color, with some colorss being just as transparent as those of QoR while others clearly have had something like titanium white added. Opacity isn't flat-out bad, gouache exists because sometimes you need opaque colors, but in general opacity should be avoided and some of Holbein's colors are more opaque and this has very occasionally been a problem.
STAINING: Staining is the quality of a paint leaving visible color behind if it is laid down on paper and then immediately washed off. This again depends on the color, but in general Holbein watercolors are moderately staining.
PERMANENCE/LIGHTFASTNESS: No watercolor painting should ever be exposed to direct sunlight for sustained periods of time. Every color will fade given long enough exposure to direct sunshine. Holbein watercolors permanence and lightfastness are very much in line with every other professional watercolor, with most of the colors getting the highest lightfastness ratings.
Given all this, why would I choose Holbein over QoR, which is also absolutely a superior watercolor paint that I love?
First is spreading: the spreading of Holbein wet-in-wet is very predictable. I happen to need that: you may not.
Secondly is honestly cost: QoR can cost twice as much. For a highly rated professional quality watercolor paint (any of which is going to be expensive,) the cost is very reasonable and has come down in this country (US) now that there are more users of Holbein watercolors here.
Third, I just love the colors, even the more opaque ones. I love QoR's colors too, but a 60 tube set of QoR would be in nosebleed territory and I just don't need that. I want to not have to mix as often, and the 60 tube set gives me that.
Fourth, I have grown to love very granulating colors. Other paints can give you that, even some of QoR's colors are quite granulating, but Holbein pleases.
So in short, while I would not recommend diving into the full 60 color set if you are a beginner (beginners also need to get experience with mixing, get a 9 color set in that case,) otherwise Holbein is a superior watercolor at a reasonable cost, or at least a more reasonable cost than QoR which again I also love.

My only complaint is that the yellows contained in this set are all made up of two or more pigments and while I didn't notice any bad effects from mixing them to make greens and oranges, I did go ahead and special order a single pigment yellow.
