Under a Tell-Tale Sky: After the EMP (Disruption Trilogy Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 1,855 ratings

A FRIGHTENINGLY REALISTIC TALE OF HARDSHIP, HEROISM, AND HOPE.

A massive solar flare...
A devastating global blackout ...
An unprecedented societal change. Nothing will ever be the same again.

What if the lights go out? For good. Would you survive?

In a 2015 investigation for The New York Times, veteran reporter Ted Koppel postulated that a major cyber attack on the nation's power grid was not only possible but likely, and that the United States was woefully unprepared. In
Lights Out: A Cyberattack, A Nation Unprepared, Koppel's best-selling companion book to the Times investigation, he described the likely aftermath of such an attack in sobering detail. Lights Out was widely praised in the media as 'an eye-opener' and received accolades from leaders of both industry and government. It was named an Amazon Best Book for 2015.

Yet despite the accolades and the supposedly 'raised awareness,' we sit here in 2020 still very much a nation (and world) unprepared.

The books of
The Disruption Trilogy are fictionalized speculation as to possible events following a similar disaster, a massive solar storm which takes out the power grid not only in the US, but world-wide. Played out across the tapestry of a 'post-electric' America, this is a tale of hardship and heroism, of desperation and impossible courage. There are no mindless zombies, nor are they needed; desperate human beings in full possession of all their faculties are far more terrifying.

Dig into the trilogy now with
Under a Tell-Tale Sky, the first exciting book in the trilogy. Stranded far from home with a now priceless cargo people will literally kill for and a near mutinous crew, Captain Jordan Hughes has no option but to defy government orders and commence a desperate voyage for home and family with a ragtag group of survivors under his protection.

Fans of the post apocalyptic genre love this story. But even if you're a skeptic, I think you'll be both surprised and delighted. If you enjoy realistic, non-stop action, you owe it to yourself to try this book.

I signed up for Kindle Unlimited to access more post-apocalyptic, dystopian fiction. McDermott delivers a well-written, well-researched, and well-paced entry for the genre. I was very appreciative to find deft literary craftsmanship in a Kindle Unlimited post-apocalyptic novel, and I don't mean a simple lack of typos. Sentence structure, style, and diction all make this novel seem written by a pro.

After reading many post-apocalyptic novels with all sorts of scenarios (plague, EMP, solar CME, economic collapse, etc.) and to the point that I told myself that I'd never read another, I picked this up, and I'm really glad I did. The descriptions of not only the action and plot, but also the characters are very realistic, at least to me. The author obviously draws on not only technical experience, but 'people' experience as well. My own background is military (USMC), and I understand the various technical aspects of the story, and certainly the shipboard routine and life, to the extent that I've lived it, anyway. This fellow knows his business. It's a very realistic book in many respects; one of the most realistic I've read so far, and that's a bunch of them, from "best-selling" to hum drum. A fine book and very, very, good reading.
'Thankful' (USMC Retired) - Amazon - 5 Stars
A tale of disaster and what happens after. What if an EMP knocks out the power grid? We're thrown into the fast-paced story from the start, and both the plot and characters were well-written. I also liked that most of the military were decent even though the government sucks, and I really enjoyed the author's note about how he came to write the book. It was informative and a great glimpse into the author's mind. In all, this was a really great post-apocalyptic read and I hope we see more from these characters in the future.

Wow, this book was incredibly detailed. I can definitely tell McDermott put a ton of thought and research into it. It was an intense read, but I really felt like everything that happened in this book could or would happen if this event (the solar flares/EMP) were to actually take place. All of the people and their actions felt very lifelike and made the story really intense and enjoyable. Overall, this was an excellent post-apocalyptic book full of great characters, great stories, and an even better use of real-world issues and problems.
Brian - Amazon - 5 Stars
What a great readable romp through the very real possibility of a post EMP world. I'm not a prepper but this new work by McDermott made me pause to think about the book's premise . . . but not before I finished it. Grab a copy and take a read. You're welcome!
Tom Davis - Amazon - 5 Stars
I thoroughly enjoyed this book for many reasons, and this Disruption series is 'pert nigh perfect' as dystopian fiction goes. It offers a slightly different view while incorporating dystopian hardships in a refreshing fashion.
Kayla Adams - Amazon - 5 Stars
This book deals with the aftermath of a Solar storm and the EMP spawned by the resulting coronal mass ejection (CME). Having read many books in this genre (it's my favorite), I can honestly say Mr. McDermott has written a real winner! The characters are developed enough so you know and remember them, but he doesn't spend pages or waste words going on about things that don't have any story significance. This book was one roller coaster of a read, with no editorial mistakes that I can remember, and was extremely informative about prepping and survival skills. Read this book! You won't be disappointed!

About the Author

Seaman, entrepreneur, former expatriate, and inveterate story-teller, R.E. (Bob) McDermott capped a long and varied career of international work and travel by turning to his secret passion, writing. Bob had the good fortune (and sometimes misfortune) of knowing more than a few interesting characters during his career, and bits and pieces of them populate his novels.

McDermott's work is characterized by meticulous research and a gritty, seldom-matched realism. He strives to make his protagonists fallible humans - not superheroes, just ordinary people who screw up, but rise to life's challenges in extraordinary situations.

Bob lives on the outskirts of Nashville, Tennessee with his patient wife (and chief proofreader) and splits his time between their condo on Old Hickory Lake and a rural retreat in the Tennessee woods with no phone, no email, and no internet. He likes that just fine and his wife is even more enthusiastic about it since they got a working toilet.

Top reviews from the United States

Reviewed in the United States on September 19, 2016
This is the first book that I've read by Bob McDermott. I am really glad that I tried it. Why? After reading many post-apocalyptic novels with all sorts of scenarios (plague, EMP, solar CME, economic collapse, etc.) to the point that I told myself that I'd never read another, I picked this up. Mr. McDermott is obviously a man of wide experience in many areas, for the descriptions of not only the action/plot in the book are realistic, but the characters also are very realistic, at least to me. The author obviously draws a wealth of knowledge from his own experiences, not only technical, but his experience with people, as well. Very, very good reading.

My background is in military (USMC) aviation and intelligence (later in my career, then they wouldn't let my fly any more). I can understand the various technical aspects of the story, and certainly understand the shipboard routine and life, to the extent that I've lived it, anyway. This fellow know his business.

And he doesnt' make stupid mistakes when discussing firearms, either, as so often happens in many novels. It happens even to the bvest of authors, it seems. In one of Robert Ludlum's old books, for example, he talked about the hero, armed with a revolver, replacing the magazine in it! It left me gazing stupidly at that line, seemingly forever.

But what I liked the most was the way he described the thinking behind the varioius decisions made by the key characters, many of which were very critical to the characters involved. It's pretty obvious to me that the author has made a number of such critical decisions, himself, for the thinking processes as described in the book and what I would expect a good decision-maker to go though. I particularly liked the way that "good guy" leaders in the story trusted their own people for advice and counsel, the mark of a true leader, to me. Well done!
It is a very realistic book in many respects; more realistic that any that I've read so far, and that is a bunch of them, from "best selling" to hum drum. And the solar CME secenario is not an unrealistic thing to expect, even though it's down in the 12% probabiity range, according to the experts.
Anyway, a fine book. I'm still reading the second installent. The author makes a clear and cogent declaration at the end of this first book as to whay he had to write a second one, for which I silently thanked him. So many of these "serial" books are broken up just to make more money; this one is not. Get both while you're at it. (Though I haven't finished the second one, it promises to be just as good as the first.)

This deserves 5 stars, all day long, however, for critics like myself using these reviews to ascertain the quality of a book I tend to ignore 5 star reviews because they're far too common to be legitimate. I first look at the critical reviews to see if there is consensus on the proclaimed flaws and if so is it a flaw that I can forgive or not forgive. Naturally the less critical reviews the better but my point is simply because a book has a high percentage of five stars does not in itself equate to a quality story.
After scouring through many post apocalyptic novels and considering their various reviews I eventually came to this particular one. I was satisfied with the critiques and convinced that it was worth tasting the free sample. The sample is the definitive test and this novel passed. Now here is what it is and what it isn't.
The MC and supporting cast are very relatable and likable. I'm personally not a fan of attempting to create realism by adding disgusting flaws to the hero such as he's an adulterator or drug user ect. I prefer my good guys to be people like myself or my friends or the bad guys to be people who you hate and want to die in the story. This story is very clear in who is good and who is bad. I also greatly appreciate the bravado of the author in dispensing with political correctness which makes this tale so much more believable. Humans should be depicted just as they are in all their animalistic treachery, not hiding things like race, language or actions to go along with their inner character.
The pace is certainly not as blazing fast as some stories. Some readers will no doubt be bored with this authors pace as it does give the reader a chance to put down the book for a break, I however prefer this pace. First, pace isn't everything. I've read from authors who are masters at page turners but ultimately negated the thrill with other flaws more egregious. Secondly, I have a life outside of reading books, so I can't devote 24 hours to read an entire novel in one sitting. Having a break in the flow is more conducive to my lifestyle.
The realism is perhaps the greatest accomplishment of this author. From the nature of it's characters, to the cause of the apocalypse, and especially how the elements of organized institutions would play out such as democracy, military, and civilian sectors. In fact that is by far the scariest part of this work because it translates perfectly what men do. Men are selfish and will contrieve any means necessary to hold on or enlarge their scope of power, especially men like politicians.
In summary, as worthy a read as any you will find and I do not easily endorse most of the material I read.

5.0 out of 5 stars I highly recommend this book (from a reader that very rarely provides reviews or recommendations)
Reviewed in Canada on November 8, 2017
I don't often review books. In my experience too often the posted reviews reflect the reviewer and not the book itself - the reviewer's political position, or their religious and / or social stance. Often something as simple as the presence of profanity in the text will result in a one star review. (Side note not related to this review: For all the sensitive readers out there, there are times where use of harsh language is appropriate in fiction and is used effectively by the author to advance a storyline.) In any case that particular concern is not found in this series.
I break form here and I will write a review and recommend this series. There are three books in this series and the author clearly states this upfront - an action that should be voluntarily adopted by all authors of serial books. This series has everything I look for in a great read - protagonists that are likeable and relatable, well developed plot lines that are pursued and then brought together and eventually closed in a satisfying manner. A narrative that flows and is enjoyable to read. (Unlike "The Road" where the prose was obsessively terse and jarring to the reader - I did not enjoy "The Road" or complete reading it, and I still don't understand the praise for that book.)
This series is truly enjoyable. A realistic scenario that is believable and technically accurate. And a high-energy and captivating story which you will find yourself wishing it continued into a fourth book in the series. I did.

ugh...this is a DNF...initially I had decided to park it for a while, then I shelved for good. The story and the characters just did not manage to get me interested. Probably there is nothing wrong in the book, it might just not be my cup of tea; I not big on post-apocalyptic books, but I was convinced by some of the reviews which defined this one as "different"...yeah, well, clearly not enough different for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great endtime thriller with maritime context
Reviewed in Germany on October 21, 2016
Again I am totally enthusiastic about McDermotts writing. This story has a good background - a natural EMP not some fancy war - and people react realistically to it. Also, the maritime context is great, of course seafarers play a major role and with their dedication and qualification create order in an unorderly world. I cannot wait to get the second book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Refreshing Take In A Crowded Genre ....
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 25, 2015
There's been a fair number of post-apocalyptic novels recently; many with zombies, some without. Most, alas, tread the same well-worn path and are difficult to finish, let alone enjoy. Mr McDermott manages to avoid the worst of the cliches, and brings us a page-turner of a tale with several separate, interwoven threads, all involving very much alive characters. As always, he enables us to suspend reality by simply knowing what he's talking about; he doesn't bore you with details about boats and navigation, he simply shows through the story that he knows these things, with neither bluster, nor guesswork, and always without the breathless over-explaining that marks out the guy who just spent three hours in Wikipedia. This makes his characters feel genuine, and enables you to immerse yourself in the tale, leaving mundane reality behind in exchange for the awful unknown that lies ahead for the large and varied cast of characters. The only downside, for me, is that he's clearly not so familiar with bad guys, and feels the need to warn us in advance who not to trust; relax, Mr McD, let them give themselves away in their own good - bad? - time.
But this really is a minor point, an occasional niggle in a cracking good yarn. I look forward to episode 2 in this series.

Reviewed in France on September 21, 2015
Under a Tell Tale Sky is the opening story in the Disruption series. This is change for Bob McDermott from his Dugan series of maritime thrillers to this Post-Apocalyptic genre which is equally thrilling. His knowledge and maritime logistics expertise is still crafted into the text which I was disappointed to complete reading. Now awaiting the sequel with anticipation. An exciting and great read. Thoroughly enjoyed every page.
