A microwave-based plastic cooker with doubtful food-safety claims
1 Star
A microwave-based plastic cooker with doubtful food-safety claims
.[ SEE UPDATE BELOW ] . Our children go to school with home-prepared meals for their lunch and one of the staple foods involves rice, which we have been cooking with an electrical, stainless-steel rice cooker that takes some 25 minutes to do the job. I purchased the Sistema microwave cooker to reduce that time by nearly half at the busiest hour of the day -- when two parents, three argumentative daughters, and one hungry but still dignified Weimaraner share the kitchen before school starts. Although I was concerned about food-contact safety in microwaving a plastic container, the manufacturer's repeated claims of safety led me to expect they would be backed by relevant data and information. Alas, they are not. SOURCE # 1. It is made in New Zealand by Sistema Plastics, which was sold at the end of 2016 to the NJ-based Newell Brands marketer. OPERATION # 2. It came with an enclosed instruction booklet in 15 languages. We followed the instructions (250 g white rice in 500 ml of water; 10 minutes in a 950 W microwave with convection settings off) and, in an impromptu family blindfolded testing, the rice's taste was indistinguishable from that of the same rice cooked 2-to-1 in the stainless-steel cooker. Sistema claims that its cooker allows *any* overflow "to be collected then drained back into the base container", but that is false : an amount of the boiling overflow is spilled onto the microwave rotating plate from the steam vents of the lid, with visible guck sticking to vent slots. Cooking a larger volume of rice will likely increase the amount of spilled overflow. Be aware that adding oil or fat to the rice could create spots whose temperature might exceed the maximum heat the plastic is able to stand, leading to damage to the container and potential injury. FOOD CONTACT SAFETY # 3. The only information Sistema provides on the safety of its products at the time of this writing are its claims in the company website's FAQ, that: (1) "all materials used in the manufacture" do not contain Bisphenol A [BPA]; (2) the products are "manufactured from Polyolefin’s [...] and do not contain any phthalate plasticizers"; (3) the products themselves "are all BPA free and do not leach"; and (4) "all our food containers [are] completely food safe". Sistema does not offer data or analysis report from a qualified third party, to support these sales pitches, some of which are disputable, if not false or misleading. <> Endocrine Disruptors. BPA and other harmful chemicals mimic the activity of the female hormone estradiol, an estrogen steroid regulating menstrual cycles and female sexual characteristics. Though Sistema's BPA-free claim is believable, it is troublesome that the claim no longer includes the statement that the materials are free of Bisphenol S [BPS] as well, which is what Sistema used to claim a few years ago. This is worrisome. First, BPS is a common substitute for BPA in BPA-free plastics. Second, having a chemical structure almost identical to BPA, BPS is also a strong endocrine disruptor. That a seller stressing BPA-free plastic as a selling point drops a prior BPS-free claim makes unclear whether it now contains BPS. <> Leaching. It was established in 2011 that most plastics from a large sample of products, including those advertised as BPA free, do leach estrogenic chemicals when exposed to common-use stresses. In 2013 the leach was confirmed in children's sippy cups, with some BPA-free plastics having a higher estrogenic activity (EA) than BPA-made plastics. Thus, nowadays, the issue is being not just BPA-free but *truly* EA-free as well. These leaching results are particularly relevant for this rice cooker, as microwaving is one of the common stresses used in the testing of food-contact safety of plastics. Sistema's 'no-leach' sales pitch, for which no data are provided, is contradicted by those testing results. Many studies show that EA chemicals can cause adverse health effects (like early female puberty, reduced male sperm counts, altered functions of reproductive organs, altered sex specific behaviors, and increased rates in some types of cancer in fetal, newborn, and juvenile mammals even at low EA levels), so this is a critical issue that deserves hard-data claims. <> Olefin Polymers. Sistema's identification of the synthetic material as "Polyolefin's" [sic] is at best vague information. Polyolefins are the largest class of polymers (synthesized by the polymerization of olefin monomers) and encompass a wide range of materials. Though having less PR hype impact, it would have been more relevant to disclose the material as polypropylene, which is what it is as shown by the "5" code in the recycling triangle icon and the "PP" label found at the bottom of the cooker (see thin blue circle in one of my figures). PP does not melt below about 320 °F/160 °C, and has a good temperature and chemical resistance but poor UV resistance. PP in itself is generally recognized as safe. But it may not be so once the smorgasbord of all the chemicals, additives, and processing elements routinely employed in manufacturing the plastic is complete. The issue for me then is what additional stuff (e.g., antioxidants, slip compounds, lubricants, dyes, etc.) was used in the processing. This is important since most additives are only rarely chemically bound to the polymer and can migrate to the food, particularly during microwaving the plastic. Further, new chemicals are created from the degradation of, for instance, antioxidants after PP is exposed to the high temperature heat of the manufacturing process. <> Safety Warning. Finally, that this PP cooker has a doubtful safety is proven by the fact that, at the time of this writing, the Product Information section in this webpage carries a Proposition 65 warning (see my other figure). Proposition 65, officially known as the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of California, enacted in 1986, "entitles California consumers to special warnings for products that contain chemicals known to the state of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm [ ... ] above certain threshold levels." Though Prop65 warnings for plastic products are often triggered by the presence of BPA or phthalates, or both, their presence is specifically rejected by Sistema. If that rejection were true, what triggers the toxic warning? I do not know. Certainly, Sistema knows it (hence their warning, shown in my figure with the screenshot of this webpage), but has decided not to make it public knowledge, and thus customers cannot inform themselves about the nature and risk(s) of the synthetic chemical(s) under suspicion. This warning shell game is played for other Sistema products as well, since most of its food storage containers on Amazon and other online platforms also carry the same warning without explanation to the customer. CONCLUSION # 4. Given all these issues, I am of the opinion that Sistema's sales pitch that its plastic containers are "completely food safe" is completely FALSE. At home, we have decided not to use this device for cooking rice for the meals. Since the cooker cannot be returned after having been used for cooking comparisons, I was about to bin it for plastic recycling when it was rescued by one of the kids, who wants to make a plant pot of the red base once we drill a hole at its bottom. She assured us it would not be something edible : )__ UPDATE (October 2022) -- The Proposition 65 Warning that appeared this webpage at the time of my review above (see my first attached figure, with a bluish rectangle highlight) now has been removed. (The warning is still found in other online platforms.) I downgraded my 2-star rating to a 1 star for this additional concealment of transparency to customers. --

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent rice but a bit tall for most microwaves.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 19, 2023
This makes great rice, so far I have used it with white basmati rice. You can wash the rice in the bowl and the inner pressure lid works great as a sieve to drain off the water. I have been using a small cup of rice to two small cups of water and putting it in on full power 800w for about 13 minutes and the rice comes out really good. It is better than the rice that comes pre cooked in microwave pouches or trays and so much cleaner and easier than using a saucepan on the hob. I found the feet on mine were a bit too pointy and smooth meaning it would slip around the microwave platter so just took a file and shaved off a couple of mm off each foot to flatten them and roughen them a bit.
