HOW TO COMPARE LED GROW LIGHTS?

If you have been researching LED grow lights for your plant growth facility, you have likely been bombarded with a variety of metrics that lighting manufacturers use to market their products: watts, lumens, LUX, PAR, PPF, PPFD. In our opinion, you woud like a lighting system that delivers the required amount of light to your plants. In order to explain the correct method for evaluating a horticulture lighting system, let’s first highlight two of the metrics used today that you need to avoid:

RULE 1: DON'T FOCUS ON THE WATTAGE OF THE LED'S. Do you use 5W, 10W, or 15W LEDs? We are asked this question on a frequent basis, but the wattage of the LED use in light does not tell you anything meaningful about the lighting system's performance since LED and fixture efficiency varies widely. Remember, the LED wattage is a system input, and growers care about the system output--PAR Output. Hence, the lighting system using 10W or 15W LED wattage doesn't deliver more light to your plants than lighting system using 5W LED wattage.

RULE 2: DON'T LOOK AT A SINGLE PPFD MEASUREMENT. Unless you are growing a small plant directly under your light, a single PPFD measurement doesn’t tell you much. By clustering the LEDs closely together and using narrow beam optics, it is very easy for a manufacturer to show an extremely high PAR measurement directly under the fixture. However, unless you are only growing one plant in this exact location, you need to know how much PAR is being distributed across the entire canopy.

Three important questions you should look to be answered when researching LED grow lights are:

Question 1: How much instantaneous PAR from the fixture is available to plants (measured as PPFD)? Question 2: How much PAR is being distributed across the entire canopy? Question 3: How much wattage is used by the fixture to make PAR available to your plants?

The three key metrics of the V300 used to answer these questions are:

par value for viparspectra 300w led grow light

ppfd for viparspectra 300w led grow light

actual power draw for viparspectra 300w led grow light

PPFD directly under the Fixture

PPFD is photosynthetic photon flux density. PPFD measures the amount of PAR that actually arrives at the plant, or as a scientist might say: “the number of photosynthetically active photons that fall on a given surface each second”. PPFD is a ‘spot’ measurement of a specific location on your plant canopy, and it is measured in micromoles per square meter per second (μmol/m2/s) .

PPFD over a 2’x2’ Area

If you are growing over a 2’ x 2’ area, you need to review the PPFD levels over the entire area to calculate the average light level the lighting system is providing. If you only had a center point measurement you may assume a fixture is extremely powerful. However, you would need multiple measurements across the 2×2 grow area to calculate the average amount of PAR that is provided by the fixture.

Actual Power Draw

In general, for well-designed full spectrum lighting system, the higher actual power draw is, the higher PAR Output a lighting system emits to plants. So how much actual power draw do you get when buying other 600W(60x10W) LED grow lights?

Using Suggestion: Remember to properly adjust the height accordingly to your plants' respond.

Glad I did my research and chose this as my first light!
Bought this back in May 2018 and I've been using it every day since. I collect succulents and wanted to have some close to me inside and just have better control over their environment. At first I hung the light from the ceiling but with the metal shelf I realized I could just set it on top of the top shelf and it would sit at a good spot above the second shelf. It sits 1 foot away from the top of my plants and gives me some really great stress color on all my plants. I do have a 3rd lower shelf on my stand but it's about 2 feet away and with all the plants above blocking light it doesn't get very much filter down light. I mostly just have a drip tray and various props I'm working on on that last shelf and then move them either to the top shelf if i have room or outside as needed. I like to have a few etiolated or rescue plants on the top shelf to give me something to check the progress of so don't look at my shelf photo and judge the light on the sad plants I've got under there. I've included some photos of my best plants (i think) that have grown under this light and I love them dearly. I have had flowers grow while under it (in fact my Faucaria won't STOP flowering and it's been doing so since Nov 2018, I've moved it to the lower shelf to see if less light will stop it's blooming) but I do get more blooms outdoors. I don't mind, though, as flower stalks can get a little in the way if they all did it.It is very bright and purple and I have it placed in my dinning room so to help mitigate that a bit I've just surrounded my shelf with foam board. It's easy to just move the board away when I want to check in on them. Not the prettiest solution but it works for me. I picked up a timer for the outlet at Home Depot and have it set to go on and off with the sun, so it's on around 12 hours a day give or take. I do change the hours every so often as the season's change but otherwise it's set it and forget it.As long as the vents aren't blocked the unit never gets hot and it's even cool to the touch in some spots. It does get a bit dusty but I just use compressed air to blow it out every so often.Overall a very good light! My collection is starting to expand beyond it's range so I'll probably switch to T5 bulbs on a larger shelving unit but this is still great for a smaller space.EDIT: It's now March 2023 and this light has finally died. All the LEDs are extremely dim and flickering. 5 years seems like a good run, but it says it has a Lifespan of ≥100,000 hours. I have my timer set to the currently season's day light hours, so for me i've probably only run it for 22,000 hours max. I'm not really upset about it, it's had a good run, but it did not last 100k hours.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect light and low price.
Reviewed in the United States on June 29, 2017
I have bought two however have only needed one due to space constraints. This is an amazing lighting system. After having my outdoor succulents savaged by all sorts of fauna I brought them indoors and placed them next to glass sliding doors will full spectrum cfl bulb and reflector for backup however my plants were not happy even with central Florida indirect light. Bought this puppy and placed my plants in a sad dark corner with no natural light at all and they exploded in size. Jade has nice pink tips again letting me know it's getting ample light with no burning. The darker plant is has daily observable growth. This thing is so bright I had to wrap the plants in simple aluminum foil the minimize the bright light impacting tv quality in the den. Ran it 24/7 for 3-4 months and the plants were exploding with growth. I could barely keep up with the water requirement for desert plants. I bought a manual timer set to 12 hrs to cut back on grow time and maintenance more so than electric cost. I'm pretty sure this thing didn't raise my bill in any appreciable way. Total run time 6months. The system itself is self contained and very well thought out. You can even daisy-chain if you want to reduce the number of outlets. Fan noise is noticeable when turns on but I tune it out in seconds. Does not significantly impact tv watching. As far as heat I keep my house 73 and there is a minimal warming of outflow air on the side by the heat sink with other 3 sides at room temp. I would say ultra efficient. Attractive set up. I would rec getting the next size up because when you see how well this works you will immediately want another one if you have the space. However this light is more than adequate for growing anything for fun at home. I would expect leafy plants with lower light requirements to just explode with growth at a much higher distance. I would highly recommend any reflector system as it 2x the amount of tasty photons your plants get. Indoor growing experience: novice. Occupation: Physician.
