STATE-OF-THE-ART NEUMANN ENGINEERINGThe KM 184 is a state-of-the-art small diaphragm condenser microphone with a uniform, frequency-independent cardioid polar pattern. Its very natural, transparent sound with very low self-noise and high SPL capability have made the KM 184 a worldwide stage and studio standard for many applications ranging from classical piano to heavy metal drums. |
FAITHFULWhile many microphones, these days, are designed to add some sonic imprint of their own, there are many applications that require a faithful reproduction of the original acoustic event, without adding or removing anything. That’s where the Neumann Series 180 comes in. |
CARDIOIDIts cardioid pattern is frequency-independent; rejection of rearward sound (180°) is excellent, even at low frequencies. In practical usage, there is no sound coloration over a wide pickup angle, which is crucial in multi-microphone setups and for precise stereo/surround imaging. |
APPLICATIONS
The KM 184 is a universal microphone for studio and stage applications. Its transparent sound makes the KM 184 a superb microphone for acoustic instruments, such as piano, percussion, drums, acoustic guitar, upright bass, violin, cello, woodwinds, and brass. The KM 184 can be used for soloists as well as ensembles.

A home studio can produce really good Big studio quality with some lesser mics, but as any producer, or engineer will tell you, "THE BETTER THE SOUND GOING IN....THE BETTER THE SOUND COMING OUT" it is totally worth it to invest in some PREMIUM MICs, and you will not go wrong with these Neumann KM 184 MT's
And did I mention....it's totally worth it?
Amazing Sound......Amazing Mic
I’ve tracked these mics with DAWs and portables and they’re always accurate and balanced with robust signal output. They’re also extremely sensitive, quickly responding to subtle changes in guitar dynamics and timbre. Artificial and natural harmonics have plenty of sparkle and air and the ultra low noise of the KM184 allow delicate tones to really shine in the track.
I mainly use the KM184 as a pair on a stereo bar in X/Y configuration. The cardioid pattern "hears" in a 180 degree sound field in front of them, but with reduced backwards sensitivity. When I record guitar ensembles with players on the extreme right and left of the mics, they sound just as vivid as the center players. I can hear the position of each player in the stereo field with pinpoint accuracy.
Because these mics are well balanced, tracks need a minimum of post processing. If I record in a decent room and position mics well, all I need is a touch of EQ in the lower midrange and they sound full and natural.
The video features my ensemble, the Frary Guitar Duo, playing Scarborough Fair. We recorded it in my office with a pair of KM184 (stereo bar) and Tascam DR-100 MKII.
Finally, the KM184 makes a wonderful stage mic for acoustic and classical guitar. Unlike many recording mics, these are small (cigar sized) robust and have plenty of output. Be sure to bring your own clip as the KM184 is too small for clips used on stage mics.
LAST BLURB
I'm extremely pleased with my pair of Neumann KM184: impeccable fit and finish, natural and balanced sound and clean output. These are the mics I reach for first when recording classical and acoustic guitars.
