Product Description
This tiny foot pod is small enough to attach to your shoelaces or fit in the mid-sole pocket of compatible shoes. It's always ready to use, and a small, replaceable watch battery powers the foot pod for a year of training. Unlike simple pedometers, this foot pod uses advanced MEMS inertial-sensor technology to analyze your movements and is responsive to stride-length changes to achieve 98 percent accuracy for speed and distance. Additionally, this sensor measures running cadence to help you optimize your training.

The Garmin Foot Pod is the latest design, featuring the smallest housing that I've seen for this type of design. It is designed to fit in the compartments of MiCoach-compatible shoes as well as clip onto the shoelaces of any standard running shoe.
I have a pair of Adidas Marthon 10M men's road running shoes that have a small pocket underneath the insole in which the Garmin footpod easily fit. Just make sure that the contoured or rounded part of the Foot Pod sensor faces the ground, and the flat side (the one with the battery compartment) faces your foot. The foot pod is actually the same size as the foam insert that came with my shoe.
The included bracket fits underneath the shoelaces, and the foot pod sensor actually clips over the shoe laces to keep the pod secured to the shoe as you run. I noticed that with enough force, the bracket could theoretically bend enough to allow the sensor to fall out, but it would require a force coming from a direction not encountered when running.
The ANT+ interface means it is compatible with any device that offers the ability to interface with ANT+ devices. The foot pod was easily recognized by my Garmin Forerunner 305 as well as my MotoACTV.
I couldn't find any specific documentation explaining the point or benefit of the foot pod other than that it records your steps indoors and outdoors. I would find metrics like steps and step rate when running outdoors, which by themselves seem meaningless. The actual benefit would come from indoor workouts after calibrating the foot pod with your device so that it would record indoor running or walking distances with decent accuracy. This would be a significant benefit for anyone that employs an indoor walking or running workout. I only run outdoors so the data that I collect isn't as useful, but I enjoy collecting and reading statistics on my workouts.
Overall: 5/5 stars. Works great and was easily recognized by my Forerunner 305 and Motoactv. It isn't very useful for those that run or walk outdoors since GPS handles the distance calculations, but it would be of significant benefit for those with indoor walking and running exercise since the steps can be calibrated to produce quasi-accurate distance measurements. Fit perfectly in the special compartment of my MiCoach-compatible Adidas Marathon 10M running shoes, as well as on the shoelaces of my Adidas Kanadia all-terrain trainers.
I bought this product to track my runs (with more detail) and to gather running information from using treadmills inside the gym. I bought this product four years ago. When I recieved the product I noticed how tiny it is (less than the size of my big thumb). Putting in the battery was simple and putting my shoe laces through it was simple. When I tried to sync it with my garmin 405 it synced within a couple seconds. Having it on one of my shoes feels solid and after running for awhile I forgot it was even there. The battery works for a long time as well.
After going for a run I connected my garmin to the computer and uploaded my data. I noticed it provides details such as running cadence (steps/min). I am not really sure what to do with this information. I am sure there are forums out there to give you details on how this information but nothing was provided on the garmin website. I did notice that my running data indoors was different than the treadmills at the gym and probably a lot more accurate.
I bought this product or should I say toy as I thought having more data about my actual running would make me a better and more informed runner.I have more data now but I am not sure what to do with the data. I do notice improvements to the garmin website over time and maybe they will add something to help beginners like myself analyze this data and translate it's usefulness.
Overall I have not had any problems of any kind with this product and would recommend it for more serious runners.
