Good product but with some caveats

Good product but with some caveats
I like the ability to protect all my computers as well as my other family members but it comes at a cost.. annoying, repeated, LARGE (3 inches by 5 inches) popup windows blathering about how good Norton is at protecting you and running ads for their other products and/or services you either don't have or haven't, and don't want enabled. Some of these come just a minute or two after dismissing the last popup window. Many of the windows have a "Don't show this anymore" button which appears to only affect THAT particular window, not the next ones to come (see screen shots). You've likely seen other reviews talking about their ridiculous licensing scheme.. when your year license is close to expiring, they offer you a "discount" which makes their renewal price far more than you'll pay for a retail license for this product. If you buy an new retail license, Symantec provides a way for you to register your new license key to your accounts, however, doing so will create a "New" license tab (not a renewal) which will NOT continue the protection on all your computers. You will have to uninstall the software from EVERY protected computer/device and then re-install it with the new licensed software in order to cover those computers for another year. This doesn't happen if you pay them their high price of renewal, which suggests this is deliberate, to offer no cheaper alternative to renewing directly through them. This creates the headache of visiting every computer/device to un/re-install. If you have family members in other state, as I do, this makes protecting them a chore. All in all, it works great but 1. When I pay for a software product, the expectation is that it is not "Ad Based". I don't want to see a constant barrage of large popup windows telling me about all their other products or how they're always on the job protecting me. 2. Don't create such a nightmare for renewing or re-licensing the product.

First thing is I never sign up for auto-renew as it is higher priced than the new customer price or if you catch it on sale. The original Norton Internet Security (pre cloud) stored your saved logons and passwords on your PC's hard drive in encryption form. As you add or change that information, in the programs password manager, you can save changes to a file. If you ever need to restore those passwords, you simply import the file. There is a hidden folder where Norton stores this info. Once they rolled out late 2018 versions, only option is to store your private info on THEIR CLOUD! I am not storing private banking, email, amazon logons on any server other than my home network cloud. This makes that logon info safe, storing anything on an internet cloud is dangerous to your privacy and personal info. Fortunately, I archive and store every version of Norton Internet Security to backup servers. Up to August 2018 your passwords were safely stored on your computer. As they rolled out Norton Deluxe in late 2018, storing passwords only works with THEIR CLOUD! Fortunately, I still have the last version that stores locally. When I installed Windows 10 from scratch, I installed that older version with no flaws. Then imported my saved logons and passwords. It still stored them locally. After performing all Norton updates, I was at the latest version of 2019. And it still allows my control of where I choose to store my private information. So I will never un-install Norton Internet Security and install Deluxe or Premium versions. When the 30 days left nag screen first appears, I enter the new activation number off the keycard and wait for the server to update as good for another 365 days. I usually do this as soon as the nag screen appears and I never subscribe to the spendy auto-renew as Norton charges long time customers more. I looked at what is included in the Premium version and it only adds features that I would never use, like the 25gb cloud and parental controls. Therefore, I never uninstall my original Norton Internet Security (non deluxe or premium). As mine upgrades to the latest version, those features are there if I ever choose to use them. Personally, I am anti-cloud storage as anyone could bust in and steal private information. I purchased a Western Digital 4TB cloud on Amazon that runs on a Ethernet cable, connected to my wi-fi router. It is where we store movies, music and most importantly, private files. We can access our own home cloud from any of our devices. If I need a file, it is right there. No worries about security breaches or hacks as my wi-fi is locked down hard. Only allowed devices can even connect. Now, if you store anything on an Internet Cloud, you have zero control of your personal info. And Norton wants me to store my banking logon info where? On their cloud? So, once a year, I wait for Amazon or Costco to have any version of Norton Internet on sale and I buy 2 cards. Then I am good for another 2 years once activated. The keycodes do not expire so I purchase in advance. Yesterday, I was checking on my Amazon orders and saw 1 day special on Norton Premium 10 device keycode only for $29. Threw 2 in my cart, which arrived yesterday with seal intact. Be cautious when receiving your keycode. Check with magnifying glass to make sure it was not previously used and returned. So far, I have never had to un-install Norton Internet Security (original and updated to latest version). The keycode either works or not. Have always received never used, seal intact Norton keycodes that work and cross over. So, the deluxe keycode will upgrade my allowed devices to 5 and the Premium to 10 without having to install that particular version which is apparently cloud based. It is a good idea that when Norton pops up with "new version available" allow it to upgrade. It will create a desktop folder called install files or something like that. Copy that entire folder to a thumb drive once the upgrade is in process. After completion, rename that saved folder to Norton Internet deluxe or whatever version you have. Then grab the version number from the Norton "about" screen" and add those numbers to the saved folder name and throw the date on the end of folder. Save that folder to your perm storage for files for safe keeping. That way, if Norton ever removes features, you have a copy of the original install files for a re-install. I have archived many versions as far back as 2013. For example, my older computer works better with older Norton versions. For the price, Norton is a great and reliable product. I was glad that they had the 1 day sale and did not limit it to 1 per customer. I should have bought 2 more after the first order of 2 keycards processed correctly. But that is ok as $65 for 2 years is a great price when Norton charges current customers anywhere between $39-$65 renewal. You would think they would want to compete with Amazon and Costco. They only did 1 year which costs me $39 and only for 3 PC's. We only protect 4 PC's but for $27 per years (10 devices) that was a good price for a great product. Beware of other brands of Internet Security that have claims of high protection. I will not mention names, but there is another major product that the product and servers are in Russia! For this born in America, I would never rust my Internet Security overseas. To big of a backdoor chance for my comfort level. Stick with Norton. You will find that their interface is very user friendly and easy to figure out what settings you want to use.

Item: Symantec Norton Security Premium – 10 Devices – 1 Year Subscription [PC/Mac/Mobile Key Card].

Antivirus is like preference in cars. Some like a Chevy. Some like BMW. Others want Maserati. I have always used Norton and it is not perfect, but I like it; it works.

It is very processor and hardware intensive. If you have a fast machine with lots of power (Memory & Speed), you won't notice a thing. It does slow down older PCs, like 10 year old WIn 7 Pcs that should have never been upgraded to Win 10 anyway.

I am using it on a overpowered custom gaming PC with Win 7 Pro 64 bit & Win 10 Pro 64bit (Dual boot). It has found several viruses and spyware that others let through my firewall when my PC was off, but came through the network.

Price is good. Works with Win 10 Defender seamlessly. For Win 7, Norton does integrate with Windows System & Security well, but I uninstalled/changed portions of it to work better. This alleviates conflict of both scanning at the same time or update virus definitions together.

It is on my Android phone, too. It works. Very happy. The spam caller feature on the phone. tells you how many people reported the number as spam/telemarketer and gives you options of reporting the number and blocking it. It works.

Best of all if you are going to do something that requires all of your PC power, just turn Norton on Silent and background scans and maintenance will be on hold for a period of time. This takes care of slowing down your PC on an old machine.

Yes. I would buy it again until Win 10 can prove to me that I do not need anything else.

I'm a long-time faithful user of Norton products, as evidenced by the fifteen different subscriptions that show up in my Norton account. More on that later. For the most part, I've never had a problem with Norton products. I always opt to buy the retail version because it is far cheaper than their renewal pricing, even their "sale" or "special" pricing. I have yet to catch any malware while under Norton's watch although much of that is also in part due to common sense and experience gained from working in the IT field.

Last year, Norton decided to change to a new subscription model. Some aspects of it are great, such as the ability to finally protect a realistic number of devices affordably under one license. The three device limit was too limited even a decade ago, let alone now. With Norton premium, I can protect 10 devices for a realistic price. Considering the size of my family and the number of computing and mobile devices we use, even that isn't sufficient to cover every device but at least all of the most vulnerable devices like our PC's are covered.

It appears Norton has gone completely cloud based. I ordered the so-called retail package instead of the cloud version from Amazon. I was sent a box with a card inside that had an activation URL and a key code on it. That's it. Honestly, they should stop offering the retail version altogether if that's the case. At least ship the cards in envelopes or something else smaller than traditional sized software boxes large enough to hold a jewel-cased optical disk and instruction manual.

Norton Security Premium works on PC's, Macs, smartphones and tablets. I can speak from both personal experience and feedback from other users that although it technically "works" on Apple devices, it's pretty much worthless in OSX and iOS. It is great on Android and Windows devices, offering true protection and no noticeable performance hit. It can actually do more harm than good to Macs and offers nothing useful at all on iOS devices. Apple owners, save your loot, seriously.

Installation is usually straightforward. In the past, I'd simply uninstall the previous version and install the new version. It seems that recent past versions did a much better job of removing all of the files it installed. The new Norton Security seems to be falling back into some of the bad habits of much earlier versions of Norton, leaving files behind that can interfere with subsequent installs. I had a few hiccups with my new installation and activation that I hadn't encountered in at least the past 3-4 years. Once installed, it offers antivirus and malware protection as well as online protection, automated backup and 25 GB of cloud storage. Basically, I only use the AV/malware portion. It also offers child monitoring features through Norton Family but they can be had for free with a Norton account. In fact, the Premier version of Norton Family will set you back fifty-bucks regardless of which version of Norton Security you own.

Norton goes way out of the way to make retail upgrades... well, actually, there is no such thing because a new retail license is just that, a new retail license. True upgrades have to be purchased directly from Symantec. Despite being offered the option to enter a new product key in my recently expired subscription, it didn't work in either the online management or the desktop client. I had to create a new subscription in my account, uninstall the expired client and download and re-install the client from the new subscription tab. Speaking of tabs, Norton management provides no way to delete expired subscription tabs. I have fifteen tabs for products dating back years and fourteen of them are expired. Each has a button offering to renew but none has an option to delete. It's cluttered and ridiculous looking. I'm almost ready to create a new Norton account because I'm so tired of the messy interface. Despite some good points like dynamic online management of specific device licenses, the entire management scheme seems very clumsy.

So that's my take. Norton Security does a good job of protecting my PC with minimal impact on the resources. It is pretty much worthless on my Mac and iOS devices but they don't really need quite as badly as my other devices anyhow. Plus, I have better options, at least on my Mac. Activation and renewal seem to have gotten clumsier with the new version along with uninstalling. Those minor headaches are no reason to jump ship. Best of all, it protects 10 PCs for pretty much the same price I paid to protect a paltry number of three PC's as recently as a year ago.

I am the family tech and I buy this every year to renew on the family's machines. I can honestly say that none have had any issues since I started using Nortons on their machines years ago. Now that everyone has been upgraded to 10, I have left a couple on Defender to compare but I am still very confident that Norton installed machines have been rock steady (trouble free for me) and worth the extra investment.
