While I knew we were unique right down to our fingerprints, until I read "Biochemical Individuality," by Roger J. Williams I didn't realize just how different we all are. Even identical twins are not identical biochemically. People have varying sizes and shapes of different organs, such as hearts and livers, different enzymatic, endocrine and excretion patterns, different reactions to drugs, different needs as to the amount of various vitamins and minerals they require and more. The author details the studies that have been done that confirm these differences.

While varying in size, I always thought organs such as the stomach, heart, brain and liver all looked pretty much alike. I was wrong. The pictures of the varying shapes and sizes of numerous body organs was truly amazing. Modern medicine has a one size fits all approach to medicine and nutrition. For example, they do not factor in individual differences in nutritional needs for varying individuals. This is where the best book of the many I've read on diet comes in. "The Metabolic Typing Diet," by William Wolcott details individual diets for different metabolic types with with a wide range of nutritional needs. That is why the high carbohydrate Dean Ornish diet works so well for one person, while the Adkins diet works so well for someone else. Wolcott was a student of and lab assistant to Williams.

This book was a gift to our 24-year-old grand-daughter. Even though we were a little late ordering it for her birthday, it arrived in plenty of time to be enjoyed on her special day. She does her best to eat all of the right & healthy foods. She was very excited to have this book. She indicated that it is very helpful to her in guiding her towards reaching her diet goals.

A very important book that should be read with the author's, 'You Are Extraordinary'. The philosophical implications are very important for anyone considering himself to have an intellect. Broad epistemological strokes. Top ten books.

It details all the different composition of human and animal body and how this vary from one individual to another, for example, in a study with rabbits, the contents of albumina in blood rate from this range to that range concluding that not everybody have the same biochemistry. So what the author does in a creative manner is register all this values of different components like hormones, vitamins, etc. in the body and how it differs from one person to another.

5.0 out of 5 stars We are not all the same

The facts on the incredible range of "normal" in terms of human biochemistry. Some people need large amounts of particular nutrients to be healthy, while others need paltry amounts to still be thriving. Average is a statistical term, not an individual's result; so you are very unlikely to be average, but you are certainly an individual. Dr. Williams' book delves into individual nutrient needs much more than the usual dietary advice generally available to us does.

Unearthly boring to read, but the information... Dr. Williams was well ahead of his time. Every student of Nutrition should read and understand his works to understand how Nutrition works. I have no idea why they did not recommend this book to me when I was in University studying Nutrition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Roger Williams - a giant in the understanding of optimum hutrition
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 13, 2015
Modern medicine seems to ignore the fact that we are all completely different, just as much as it ignores the overwhelming importance of nutrition and detoxification in the pursuit of personal health. Why is this? Because medicine (with the exception of the emergency services) has been turned largely into a profit-machine, and therefore its business model is the management of chronic illness rather than healing. In this thorough and comprehensive study, Williams demonstrates something of the physical and physiological basis of the diversity present in the population, which accounts for the hugely varying nutritional requirements for diverse individuals to all enjoy good health. Williams saw so much, he understood the idea of vitamin dependency, and intuitively grasped what we now know as Epigenetics. This completely goes against the 'one size fits all' recommended daily allowance mentality of the modern-day brainwashed 'clinical' nutritionist. You need as much of a vitamin, mineral, essential fatty acid or any other naturally occurring (i.e. orthomolecular) nutritional component as enables you, personally, to recover and maintain optimum health. No medicine can do this for you, no doctor can do this for you. An understanding of this book will help you on your way.
