About the author
Fred Piscop is a 1970 graduate of Cornell University.
Fred became interested in puzzles at a very young age, thanks to his dear friend and mentor, the late George Bredehorn. George was Fred's teacher in an accelerated program from 1958 to 1960 and introduced Fred to all sorts of word games, mathematical puzzles and the like.
George was the inventor of the popular Split Decisions© word game, which can be found a few times a year in The New York Times as well as in every issue of Games World of Puzzles. Fred's book "The Healthy Brain Book of Word Puzzles" contains 32 Split Decisions© puzzles as well as an additional assortment of puzzles invented by George.
In 1995, Fred was working as a PC tech support specialist when he got laid off. He decided "to hell with the 9-to-5, I'm not going back." From that day forward, Fred has been a full-time puzzlemaker and editor.
Fred is the former editor of the Washington Post Sunday crossword and the former editor of the USA Today crossword. He creates the monthly bonus online puzzle for the New York Times and submits crosswords to various other outlets such as Newsday, Simon & Schuster, and Crosswords With Friends.
Fred operates a Split Decisions© website, www.split-decisions.us.
Fred is a keyboard player and can be found playing at a few jam sessions every week on his native Long Island.
Fred is a volunteer at Last Hope Animal Rescue, where he met and adopted his beagle Mad Max. Fred enjoys taking Max on long walks, to the dog park, and occasionally to a dog-friendly microbrewery,

- Reviewed in the United States on December 26, 2020I usually buy the Mensa crossword-a-day calendar. In the past couple of years, I've been annoyed by obvious errors that I've found in some puzzles, plus I didn't like writing "around" the plastic calendar holder. So I ordered this book as well as the calendar. Maybe it's because this book was first published in 2011, I have not found any annoying "errors" in it. Some of the cluing may be a bit out of date, but then, so am I. I especially like that Mensa puzzles don't stoop to tricks like requiring you to draw a symbol for a series of letters (like a heart shape where letters H-E-A-R-T are in the middle on an answer), or write a word "backwards", or figure out some silly pun. Also, there aren't a lot of simple filler clues. The book is small, so there's not a lot of room for your hand to rest on the page while you work the puzzle, but I still find it easier than the calendar format. It's easier if you cleanly tear out the completed puzzles every ten pages or so. But the clues for the next puzzle are printed on the back of the puzzle before it, so be sure you don't tear out a page of clues inadvertently.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 3, 2022I use this product for sanity and happiness. Working on the puzzles when I wake up in the middle of the night is a perfect solution rto staying off the blue lights. Mr. Piscop enjoys theater, literature, sports and music. He evokes my latent knowledge of a variety of subjects, assuring me that I haven’t lost my memory at age 77. He makes sure to sprinkle items from pop culture keeping it modern. My admiration to the author for his wit. My sincere appreciation for his delightful works.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 17, 2025This is a great little puzzle book! Fits so nicely in my purse. I have to say, though, that the puzzles are not very difficult. I’ve done other Mensa puzzles, and they were a lot harder than these. Also, there are some clues/words that are repeated often in numerous other puzzles throughout the book. Having said all that, I am still enjoying the puzzles!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 5, 2024Mrs. Tinman here
This is my second time buying this type of book. I keep it in my purse for when I have to wait.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 20, 2024Book is small. We enlarge to make the puzzles easier to see.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 9, 2023I expected harder puzzles and am disappointed. The book is also very small, approx. 3x5 inches. Main complaint is with MENSA in name, expected puzzles that were more challenging. Other reviewer compared them to NYT Tuesday- well I dont even bother with those.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 16, 2020The puzzles are mostly clever, quick and fun. The size is just right for travel or waiting rooms, the print large enough to be comfortable in various lighting, and the puzzles small enough to complete in 10 minutes or so. I wish they'd make more of these.

2.0 out of 5 stars Partly useless
I bought "cross puzzles". It saif used. I thought it meant out of the box, may be wrinkled, or something like that, but I did not expect the first 50 patges to have puzzles already done by someone. and thetrefore useless to me
