“Focused and persuasive... Bray’s book is many things: the first English-language transnational history of antifa, a how-to for would-be activists, and a record of advice from anti-Fascist organizers past and present.”—THE NEW YORKER
As long as there has been fascism, there has been anti-fascism — also known as “antifa.” Born out of resistance to Mussolini and Hitler, the antifa movement has suddenly burst into the headlines amidst opposition to the Trump administration and the alt-right.
In a smart and gripping investigation, historian and activist Mark Bray provides a detailed survey of the full history of anti-fascism from its origins to the present day — the first transnational history of postwar anti-fascism in English. Today, critics say shutting down political adversaries is anti-democratic; antifa adherents argue that the horrors of fascism must never be allowed the slightest chance to triumph again. Bray amply demonstrates that antifa simply aims to deny fascists the opportunity to promote their oppressive politics, and to protect tolerant communities from acts of violence promulgated by fascists.
Based on interviews with anti-fascists from around the world, Antifa details the tactics of the movement and the philosophy behind it, offering insight into the growing but little-understood resistance fighting back against fascism in all its guises.

Editorial Reviews
Review
"Insurgent activist movements need spokesmen, intellectuals and apologists, and for the moment Mark Bray is filling in as all three... The book’s most enlightening contribution is on the history of anti-fascist efforts over the past century, but its most relevant for today is its justification for stifling speech and clobbering white supremacists."—Carlos Lozada, THE WASHINGTON POST
“[Bray’s] analysis is methodical, and clearly informed by both his historical training and 15 years of organizing, which included Occupy Wall Street…Antifa: The Anti-Fascist Handbook couldn’t have emerged at a more opportune time. Bray’s arguments are incisive and cohesive, and his consistent refusal to back down from principle makes the book a crucial intervention in our political moment.”—SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE
“Bray’s aim is to present an accessible genealogy of today’s militant anti-fascist movement… Antifa is written from a commendable place of engagement and provides a serviceable genealogy for militant anti-fascism in the present, and Bray’s often well-reasoned defense of controversial tactics should and will make the critics reflect. The book is at its best when criticizing the liberal view that official democratic institutions alone are sufficient to prevent a fascist seizure of power.” —LOS ANGELES REVIEW OF BOOKS
“Incisive”—THE NEW YORK TIMES
"Vital... [Bray] gives a straightforward and clear-headed evaluation of the movement. And there is an urgency here: Cranked out quickly post-Trump and released the week of the Charlottesville white supremacist attack, “Antifa Handbook” is hard history, a call to action, and an even-handed and reasonable explanation as to why we need to be way less damned reasonable."—THE BALTIMORE BEAT
“Mark Bray does a great job detailing the movement’s growth in the U.S. and giving historical context to the antifa’s resurgence. Read the book if you want to learn even more…” —REVEAL NEWS
“[An] excellent introduction, which serves as a reasoned and passionate defense…Antifa: The Anti-Fascist Handbook serves as an educational tool for those whose inclination is to support antifa because they oppose fascism and white supremacy, but remain on the fence... Bray’s concise and multilayered text is an essential aid in that task.” —COUNTER PUNCH
“Mark Bray’s Antifa: The Anti-Fascist Handbook arrives as a timely and thoroughly researched primer on the movement’s philosophy and tactics...readers of “Antifa” can be assured of gaining insight on an increasingly visible and misunderstood group looking to keep the genocidal past from repeating.” —PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE
“Antifa urges people to organize against fascism before it organizes against us.” —THE STRANGER
“In the Trump era, Bray’s Handbook is essential reading.” —PROGRESSIVE MAGAZINE

It discusses points of origin for proto-fascism and the proto-antifascist movements that spawned from that, going back to the Dreyfus affaire in the 1890s in France and the formation of the Klu Klux Klan in the 1860s.
It notes that antifa is not a formal organization (though, some may form groups for action) but rather a sort of practice one might engage in - that is, opposing the advancment of fascism. As such, it is exercised flexibly and locally. For this reason is why action is so varied, as it may include socialists, anarchists, revolutionaries, communists, or even people of apolitical backgrounds.
It also touches on the topic of free speech, deplatforming alt-right speakers such as Milo Yiannopoulos, and the media response and priming of such deplatforming.
I definitely recommend this book if you are looking for a crash course on the history and general philosophy of (mainly European) antifascist efforts and for perspective on the antifascist efforts that have spawned in the United States following the inauguration of Donald Trump.
As for the group of 1-stars (mostly unverified purchasers), it's quite clear that the majority leaving their reviews have not actually read this book. I see many claiming that it is fascism to engage in an act of political violence. To say that a particular political action is "bad" because it features is violence is tautological. Politics is about the distribution of power and power is enforced by violence; ergo, there isn't a corner in politics that does not include violence, the details are in "who" the violence is being done to and "why." Seeing as the definition of fascism be argued in the book is not so simplistic, it could be said that those making this claim are arguing against a strawman.
Many also claim that the author is advocating violence and censorship; however, reading the book reveals that the author has mostly summarized the perspective of antifascist individuals (mainly in Europe). Though the author will occasionally give his opinion on a particular issue, the bulk of the text is based on interviews with antifascist individuals and organizations. If you disapprove of the methods of antifascist groups, that is your prerogative but do not misrepresent the content of the book and dismiss it with this silly "antifascists are the new fascists" nonsense.
After providing a history of antifascism, with previous labor uprisings and anti-Nazi protests around the world, the bulk of the book is truly about how Antifa functions, what the purpose is, and how different local communitiesmaremorganized. It is in these areas in which the book really shines, from providing reasons for no-platforming alt-right instigators to how violence often occurs. At its core, Antifa holds to the idea of self-defense of the people. Which can mean that rather than wait for a strike on protected person, Antifa representatives may meet intended action with equal and opposite reaction. This is, in part, why Antifa is called up on to protect leftists or even liberals at a protest.
Chapter 1 : Early 20th Century
Chapter 2 : Later 20th Century
Chapter 3 : 21st Century so far
The later chapters aren't about history, but about violent and non-violent actions that have been taken by groups opposing fascism.
Chapter 4 : Lessons to learn from the history of the previous chapters
Chapter 5 : No-Platforming ( From taking down posters to trying to stop speaking events)
Chapter 6 : Non-violence and Everyday Anti-Fascism
Chapter 7 : Good Night White Pride ( This is a short conclusion to the book. It briefly talks about how Race has played a part in fascism. The concept is outside the scope of this book, it just gives you something to think about
After that, it's two Appendices.
Appendix A : Advice from the people interviewed
Appendix B : Other books and works to consider reading
And that's it. It's not a call to attack others, or to incite violence. It's about the history of fascism and anti-fascism. 1945 was not the end of fascism, or even the end of groups calling themselves fascists. And Anti-fascism is not a new word, there have been anti-fascists for as long as there have been fascists.
