Stan Lee is a man who needs no introduction. Nevertheless: Having begun his career with wartime Timely Comics and staying the course throughout the Atlas era, Stan the Man made comic-book history with Fantastic Four #1, harbinger of a bold new perspective in story writing that endures to this day. With some of the industry’s greatest artists, he introduced hero after hero in Incredible Hulk, Amazing Spider-Man, X-Men and more — forming a shared universe for rival publishers to measure themselves against. After an almost literal lifetime of writing and editing, Lee entered new entertainment fields and earned Marvel one opportunity after another. He remains one of Marvel’s best-known public representatives.

-----------------

I am a long time comic collector who is very disheartened with today's comic books. Reading the Marvel Masterworks brings back the old thrill I felt when I was first collecting. It's like visiting with old friends, and i don't mean just Captain America or Thor, but Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, and Don Heck. For anyone who loves cartooning and comic books, this is like studying the Masters.

Excellent for any Titanic True Beleiver (T.T.B.)and former members of the
M.M.M.S. Re-live the wonderful Silver Age of Marvel comics. Though simple
maybe even primitive by more contemporary standards, these are the stories
and the artwork that made comics great. Soft bound format makes this a book
you can enjoy for it's price point. We can all be reminded in these stories
of a simpler time, both for ourselves and for society.

This is a good collection of Jack Kirby and Stan Lee's work. If you like old comic books this is a good book. The plot has glitches and the dialog is sometimes (often) stilted, but still a classic of sequential story telling.

I'm really happy that I found the Avengers Masterworks! They are beautifully drawn and classic. And who doesn't love Stan Lee?!

You just can't beat the classics! I really enjoyed reading it. I was finished before I knew it. The dynamics of the early avenger was very interesting!

5.0 out of 5 stars Avengers really take over
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 15, 2009
This run of issues ended the first classic run of Avengers inspired by the Lee-Kirby team, with the big three Thor, Ironman and Captain America, and founder members Giantman and The Wasp. For the first time, The Avengers change their roster, bringing in former villains Hawkeye, Quicksilver and The Scarlet Witch, a controversial move at the time but one which showed a heartening desire by Marvel to experiment and not just stick with their commercial stars. This was Marvel soap opera style in all its glory - complete with the "problems", bickering, ego-clashes and prejudice that threatened to destroy the heroic fabric more from the inside than any external threat. The growing respect over time between Captain America and Hawkeye was to be signficant for the future history of the Avengers, as they went through roll-call change after roll-call change in the 60s,70s, 80s and 90s and entered the modern era, where tragedy lay ahead for many of these heroes herein featured. A fascinating historical document and a great, fun read - with much under-rated Don Heck art.

5.0 out of 5 stars In colo(u)r

You know this stuff or you probably wouldn't be buying it. To add: yes, these are in colour, but it's debatable whether the adherence to the original levels is wise. Solid print colours may have been completely necessary for use on the awful paper they used to be printed on, but on glossy white stock they are much too overpowering, and don't reproduce accurately the colours you remember. But it's a minor quibble. As a current practitioner, I am envious of the talent involved and the occasional disregard of backgrounds!

Highly recommended collection. I purchased the hard back version of volume 1 and the "paperback" version of version 2. I love both, but might even prefer the paperback option, which is also considerably cheaper.

NOTE: I tried a free sample on Kindle, but just don't think comic books work on the Kindle format.
