Care Tips for Swiss Army Knives

The various tools of a swiss army knife are manufactured from high-quality steel with precisely tuned features that are essential for the particular application. The steel is tempered, annealed and polished to achieve the necessary hardness and provide optimum resistance to corrosion. With it's unique build Swiss Army Knives require easy but particular care. Use the recommendations below to keep your knife at it's peak functionality.

  • SHARPENING: Use a whetstone at an angle of 15°– 20°. This will result in a cutting angle of 30°– 40°. If sharpening on a grinding wheel, cool with plenty of water to avoid excessive temperatures.
  • CLEANING: Open and close the blades in warm water several times. When they have dried it is recommended to apply a small drop of oil between the blade, tool shank and the spring or locking mechanism.
  • WARNING: Never put Swiss Army Knives in the dishwasher.
  • RECOMMENDATION: Swiss Army Knife Oil (Item No.4.3301). FEATURES: (1) neutral odor and taste, (2) highly resistant to aging, (3) good wear and corrosion protection qualities, and (4) Food safe

I love everything about this knife and other victorinox products. They're very well built and can stand the test of time. I have to admit I was a little disappointed that this knife which came brand new in a sealed box did not have the compass attached. I know it's trivial but I feel that the knife is incomplete. I sent an email to their US corporate headquarters to see if I could get one sent to me. Other than that the knife everything you expect from a Swiss army knife.

Mechanic by trade and a serious home tinkerer, and ive put these tools to hard use for years, they are well made, tough and very handy. Its funny to read some if the nonsense reviews of this tool that claim its not made for real use. This is my favorite SAK and i own many. I had a custom leather open top sheath crafted for mine so i can grab it quickly when i get called out to a job in the plant. These are better than ever after Victorinox acquired Wenger and changed the can opener and toothpick/tweezer to the Vic design.

The Swiss Army Evolution S54 Tool Chest is a very useful multi-tool...However, I was somewhat disappointed with some characteristics: 1. While the idea of including a compass is good, the compass on this unit is joke. It isn't magnetized quite strongly enough, so turning the casing turns the needle. It requires a bit of tapping to get the needle properly oriented, and is only effective if you already know which way is north or south. Putting it on a plastic rod (the ruler) to move it away from the other instruments helps a little, but not much. And the extra width for including the compass makes the handle a bit unwieldy. And while having a ruler is nice, (for example if you need a scale when taking a photograph), a 2.5 inch (6.5 cm) ruler isn't quite so useful in most situations. 2. The Champ has a hook disgorger/scaler with ruled lines which are just as good for measurement, and I wish the Evolution had that hook disgorger/scaler instead of the one it has, which is smooth, with no ruled lines. 3. The fingernail cleaner/file comes to a dull tip that resembles the knife point. A normal, inexpensive nail cleaner or clipper has a slightly concave cutout at the tip, giving it a slight hook-like appearance, and frankly is more functional for cleaning nails that the one on the Evolution. 4. And speaking of hooks, the standard hook found on the Champ and several other Swiss army knife models is quite useful, and I sincerely wish the Evolution had one. 5. And lastly, the tools on this model are really difficult to pull out without ripping my nails. I'm old, and may have brittle nails, but I've had several other models of pocket knives, and even after oiling, the tools on the S54 are tough to pull out...so much so, that I sometimes need to use another pocket knife (like the Trim Trio) to get them out. People, the cams don't need to be that tight! 6. Oh...and the Victorinox food-grade oil? Ordered it, after twelve days was told it's not available anymore. Tried to find other food-grade oil, but it only seems to come in 50 gallon drums. Found out that ordinary mineral oil from the drug store (used as a laxative) works just as well, and won't poison you. 7...and one more thing...the little screw driver that fits into the corkscrew should simply come with the unit, instead of being an add-on item. So...yeah, I really do like the Evolution S54, but it has its quirks that could use some improvement...and for the price, why doesn't it come with a belt sheath??? My Leatherman did.

Precio bueno a diferencia de otros sitios, es muy útil, la funda que te sugiere amazon no le queda, tiene que ser la XLT, algo robusta, filo increíble y me encantan sus funciones, la brujula es dificl de usar al principio, pero ya practicandola es bastante precisa, la cacha es bastante ergonomica, la navaja tiene seguro, lo unico malo es que ocupa mucho espacio en la navaja, a diferencia de la champ hay solo unos cuantos accesorios mas pero en funciones se dan una buena pelea, la ventaja es minima, la rtecomiendo ampliamente si lo tuyo es llevar una brujula a tu aventura siempre integrada y que no ocupe espacio.

My favorite waistcoat knife! I always wanted the original Wenger Toolchest version of this knife. This Victorinox S54 version I believe is slightly superior in that the Victorinox awl has the sewing hole. Other than that, it is the same knife as the "Toolchest". I alternatively carry this with my Victorininox "Swiss Champ". The S54 I believe overall is a more useful knife than the Swiss Champ in that the MAIN BLADE LOCKS! This is very important for field tasks in low light conditions, and for slightly heavier use. The S54 is slightly shorter - but much wider than the Swiss Champ. It really is a matter of taste. The S54 is too bulky to carry in your jeans pocket, but it fits well in a jacket pocket, or even better in a waist coat pocket - as it can be readily produced to the amazement of your peers at work - or at a convention somewhere. I admit that I can't really carry this everyday, but I do carry it once or twice a week - especially when I am among EDC and adventurer peers. Ok I admit it. It is the best conversation piece ever...
