良い音楽は時代を超える。
そうでもないものは、一瞬流行って忘れ去られ、単なる懐メロになる。

この作品は、時代を超えた最高に心地良いサウンド。
演奏がどうの時代背景がどうの考えず、音に身を任せるのが正解！

　ソニーロリンズの名作は1950年代に集中しており、とくにサキソフォンコロサスとウエイアウトウエストとビレッジバンガードが名作中の名作であるということに異論を唱える人は少ないでしょう。
　50年代の作品を順に聞いてみると面白いことに気づきます。ソニーロリンズとMJQまたはマイルスのディグを聞くとテンションが高く、リラクゼーションが不足しています。コンテンポラリーリダーズを聞くと、月のチャペル等の名作はともかく、アイファウンドアニューベイビーでは少々おふざけが過ぎ、緊張感が足りないような気がします。その中で前記の名作3枚はテンションとリラクゼーションのバランスがとてもよく取れていると思います。
　ウエイアウトウエストのメンバーを見てみると、ロリンズをギターのバーニーケッセルに換えれば、こればポールウイナーズになります。何を言いたいかというと,このメンバーは実におしゃれなプレイをしているということです。このアルバムの美しさは、テナーの名匠、コルトレーンにはとても望むべくもないと思います。

1957年の録音ですが、ちゃんとステレオしてますね。　右と左と音像の配置が、ちょっと昔っぽいけど、かえって生々しい感じがします。
じつはシェリーマンのドラムが聴きたくて購入しました。　面白い叩き方もところどころで聴けて良かったと思います。　レイブラウンのランニングベースもいいですね。　　おっと、ロリンズのテナーサックスももちろんスイングしてて力強くていいですよ～。

A truly and unexpectedly astounding pressing of one of my absolute favorite jazz albums. The main disc of WOW rivals the 45 put out by Analogue Prouctions in terms of sheer energy and quietness. I did a blind A/B test with a few friends. No one could pick with certainty which was which. But the real reason to purchase this is the absolutely phenomenal second disc of out-takes. Apparently the master reels of these cuts were never used for remastering and are like finding a box of RVG master tapes from ‘56 - the mixing and mastering (and deadly silent pressing) of these bonus tracks is worth the price alone. Jaw-dropping takes in pristine sonic condition. While some may nitpick the rather extreme stereo mix here with Sonny panned dead left, I find it really impressive in terms of separation and giving muscle to his tone. Manne’s drumming gets some extra space and Ray Brown’s bass sounds full and present. The whole second disc sounds like a jazz trio would sound playing in a room without a PA. The bonus chatter in the studio is cool. I really can’t recommend this enough to fans of the album and jazz fans in general. A true gem of a pressing.

Am Status der seinerzeit von ANALOGUE PRODUCTION veröffentlichten Edelpressung auf 180g Vinyl (1992),
hat sich nichts geändert. Dieser von Doug Sax meisterhaft dynamisch aufbereitete Vinyl-Umschnitt ist klanglich
noch immer das Nonplusultra. Leider sehr teuer und sehr selten. Diese edel aufgemachte Anniversary Version 2018,
von Digital-Dateien reproduzierte, ist aber klanglich nicht wirklich weit entfernt. Etwas strammerer Bass, allerdings
auch geringfügig synthetischer klingend, sowie ein durchaus luftiges Klangbild bei excellenter Vinyl-Qualität
machen Spaß. Die Outtakes sind allesamt sehr hörenswert und werten dieses Set zusätzlich auf. Es gibt ein
Informaton-sheet und eine schöne Box zu einem gediegenem Kurs. Günstig ist diese Produktion, trotz der sauberen Pressung
und der fantastischen Anfaßqualität der Cover nicht. Für Sammler wohl ein unverzichtbare Perle, da mit einem Sonny
Rollins in Höchstform versehen. Shelly Manne und Ray Browne sind bei diesen Aufnahmen ebenfalls in
Champions-League Verfassung.

J'ai tout d'abord découvert ce disque sur un site de musique en ligne. Je l'ai ensuite acheté en CD. La prise de son est époustouflante, l'interprétation de très haut niveau. Ce disque rejoint le carré VIP des mes enregistrements.

This is not one of Sonny's most famous early records like Saxophone Colossus, Tenor Madness or A Night at the Village Vanguard. It is nonetheless very solid. Sonny pays homage to the old Westerns that he grew up watching, while skilfully avoiding the trap of sounding campy. The CD also includes alternate takes which are just as enjoyable as the originals. This record is known in audiophile circles as the best sounding recording of Sonny Rollins from the 1950's and it certainly is very, very good. The music is presented in early "duophonic" stereo with Sonny on the left channel and bass and drums on the right, which can be annoying (I would have preferred mono). Sonny's tenor sounds great but not as huge and fat as the legendary Saxophone Colossus recording. Drums are clear and detailed but the impact suffers from being limited to just one channel. Ray Brown's bass sounds just amazing... this is among the best sounding bass I've heard on an old jazz record. It is woody, solid and authoritative without ever becoming boomy or muddy. Listening to Ray's bass lines is a real joy even when he's not soloing. I'd imagine jazz bass players especially would get a kick out of this. Check it out.
