I recently found Sarah's blog while searching for some ayurvedic grounding ideas on the internet. Quitting sugar really struck a cord. I've quit all carbs, done low carb, been vegetarian, vegan, raw vegan...you name it. I eat a whole foods diet but quitting sugar is the next step. I'm waiting to start the 8 week program until after a business trip I have to take in early May but I have followed the steps in eliminating added sugar and greatly reducing my fructose from honey and fruit. I already feel amazing. I agree that the information in the book mirrors the blog but it's great to have all the information in one place that I can pick up whenever I need to for reference. All the little tips and suggestions are wonderful. The recipes are awesome and I like that many are not specific measurements but more like suggestions. I'm trying to be a little more free spirited with my cooking rather than methodically measuring every last thing so it's a nice change. The only thing I need to be more mindful about is the recipes with stevia...working with stevia is confusing because some powders are 1 for 1 with sugar replacement and some are not and many have other ingredients added as fillers that I do not want to eat. I messed up a cookie recipe in the book...used WAY too much stevia and my husband was literally trying to claw his tongue out! Since then I printed off a converstion chart for using stevia so I'm going to try it again with the drops. I made the PB hot cocoa and it was a huge hit!

Such a good book! I completed the 8 week I Quit Sugar and lost 13 lbs without any exercise. My sister and I were competing to see if we could really complete it, so its good to have someone who is also trying to quit sugar...because it's really hard in the US. What really helped me, was carving out a time where I could go to the grocery store alone, and I looked at every label. I was so MAD! All these 'healthy' foods that I use to buy were loaded with sugar! UGH! That's what really spurred me on to keep going, and not to give in. The 3rd week was the toughest, but after that it was so problem saying 'no thanks' to that chocolate chip cookie, or pie. I don't drink juices any more, they are just too sweet. Even when I take communion at church...I can't help but make a face, way to sweet for me. I traded our skim milk for whole milk, which my husband loves. And I do use Stevia in my coffee. My attitude, energy, focus, and all around behavior improved. I continue to follow Sarah Wilson's blog. Highly recommend, life changing.

I bought this book because a friend of mine has raved about the progress she had made while trying to cut sugar out of her life. After a recent major move, I noticed that my eating habits had become…well healthy but also I was CRAVING sweets. Like, after dinner I would always want ice cream, or I’d pass by a bakery and want to get a cupcake, or I absolutely could not drink my tea without honey or sugar in it. I started baking, and only made sweet things.

I wanted to kick these sweet cravings. So I got the book! I really enjoy how S.Wilson goes into detail about how sugar affects our bodies and she even gives readers helpful recipes that are dietary restriction friendly (gluten and dairy free for example). She also helps you cut sugar week by week, not cold turkey all at once which was super helpful to me.

However, I wish there had been more options to choose from. Sugar is in a LOT of things we eat daily, and I wish this book had given me more options to curb those cravings when I had them.

This is a clearly written, colourful book. I agree with many things Sarah Wilson says, but at the outset of the book, Sarah Wilson advises the reader to cut out the sugar gradually rather than 'cold turkey'. I have tried this, but it doesn't work. Try "The Sugar Detox" by Brooke Alpert and Patricia Farris instead, it's much better. It is disappointing to find that Sarah Wilson hasn't in fact completely given up sugar. There are some good recipes in the book, but also quite a few where she uses brown rice syrup, which is sugar, and then she replaces sugar in others with stevia, but the amount she uses is far too much and the taste is nauseating! I will take from the book a few good suggestions and recipes, so it's not a complete loss, but it is untruthful to say that she has "Quit Sugar."

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun but informative book to read - If you are thinking of quitting sugar, please read this first
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 13, 2023
I know we are supposed to follow the 8-week program. I enjoyed the book so much that I read it in one day. I am on day three of quitting sugar, and I read this book thinking it would help with the process, and it did. However, it's probably a good idea to start reading it from day one. Quitting sugar is harder than I thought it would be and the theory that it takes 6 weeks to get over it is not immensely helpful. However, the benefits as presented in this book make it worth the effort. Please note that the author does state that we will probably have the occasional sugar even after quitting as half of our day-to-day items has sugar in it, but we will no longer be dependent on it, and we will have broken the addiction which is the purpose of the 8-week program. Spoiler alert, sugar found in fruit, is still sugar. So, worth the read? for sure, even though I don't feel great (due to me quitting sugar) it's good to understand what is going on in your body and how long it's going to last for. Sahrah also touches on the topics of alcohol and getting our kids to live sugar free. And a substantial portion of the book is dedicated to recipes for some great food items and sugar free treats without wasting ingredients. All and all, I really enjoyed the read and will recommend it. I might actually read the "I Quit Sugar for Life" next.
