What a great start to the series. The writer was so before his time. The stories are as fresh and as heartwarming as anything that can else being published. I love how this starts after the war and addresses so much that went on from the suffering and the feelings of revenge that remained. This is also a great way to highlight what happened to many people who stayed at home during the war. I love the fact that Cade and Pilar, while on the same side, had such differences to address. Pilar’s brother caused many to want him to pay for his behavior yet he was still her brother. I also really enjoyed the personality of Cade’s grandfather. He is a real unpolished gem. I can’t wait to read the next story in this series.

Ever since squatters took over her land Pilar and her grandmother have been living on the Wheeler's ranch. But it has been her grandmother and her who have provided the food on the ranch for the past two years. And she has been doing all the cooking and cleaning which the old man does not appreciate. The Nightriders come home with revenge on their mind against her brother. They lost many of their fellow friends when he switched sides during the war. Making it was worse was that he was their friend. He ends up befriending her in the hope that he can find out the location of her brother. Romance develops between her and the Wheeler boy. There are some twists and turns along the way. Though the pair find happiness with each other the last few pages promise more to the story between the Nightriders and her brother.

The plot was mostly predictable. This did not take away from my enjoyment of the book. Leigh Greenwood is a very good author. I have read about ten of his books and have enjoyed everyone. Sex is minimal. Since I don't enjoy reading books overly descriptive of sex this is a plus. The characters are believable. The story believable. This is a big plus. So many books today are unrealistic and the characters are flat or one dimensional. A good story is what I look for in a book and characters that are human not paper cutouts. This book has both of these qualities. A good read!
