50mm wide aperture Prime lens with ZEISS Planar designHigh-performance ‘normal’ 50mm prime lens is the ideal focal length for most photographers. The bright F1.4 maximum aperture delivers excellent low-light performance and control over defocussed backgrounds. A state-of-the-art optical design includes 12 Elements in 9 Groups with Advanced Aspheric and ED glass - reducing spherical aberration and distortion to an absolute minimum for a flat image plane that is consistent with the Planar name. |
Center to corner sharpness with outstanding resolution12 Elements in 9 Groups including Aspherical lens design which dramatically reduces spherical aberration while also reducing lens size and weight. Spherical aberration is a slight misalignment of the light rays projected on the image plane. This is caused by differences in refraction at different points on conventional spherical lenses which degrade image quality in large-aperture lenses. Specially shaped 'aspherical' elements near the diaphragm restore alignment of light rays at the image plane, maintaining high sharpness and contrast even at maximum aperture and can also be used at other points in the optical path to reduce distortion. While ED glass dramatically reduces chromatic aberration and provides superior contrast across the entire image, even at large aperture settings. |
11-blade circular aperture for gorgeous bokehWhen changing your aperture to defocus the background, the light sources appear blurred. This ‘bokeh’ effect of the blurred background can be enhanced with circular aperture blades used in this lens. Conventional aperture blades have flat sides creating unappealing polygonal shaped defocussed points of light. α lenses overcome this problem through a unique design that keeps the aperture almost perfectly circular from its wide-open setting to when it is closed by 2 stops. Smoother, more natural defocusing can be obtained as a result. |

Aperture ring with a selectable click ON/OFF switchA responsive aperture ring offers positive action that will satisfy professional photographers and moviemakers alike. The aperture ring click stops can be switched on or off as required. 'Off' is the preferred setting for moviemaking since it results in the least aperture operation noise. When 'On' the ring provides tactile feedback that is useful when shooting stills. |
AF/MF switch for direct auto/manual focus controlAn AF/MF focus mode switch on the lens allows fast and easy control of switching between auto and manual focus without having to take your eye off your subject or having to go into menus. |
ZEISS T coating delivers superior contrast and resolutionCoated optics were pioneered by Carl Zeiss -- and this superb lens features the ZEISS T* (T-Star) coating that virtually eliminates lens flare, internal reflection and light scattering that can otherwise occur at glass-to-air surfaces. The T* coating contributes to outstanding image quality, with high contrast and uniformly excellent resolution right out to the image edges. Not simply applied to any lens -- the T* symbol only appears on multi-element lenses in which the required performance has been achieved throughout the entire optical path, therefore guaranteeing the highest quality. |

First, this is expensive and is by far the most I've spent on a lens. I saved a little to ease the burden of the excessive cost but it still stings a bit. The main thing after you get over the sting a bit is that you have a good return on investment and I feel strongly that the return on your investment regarding this lens is great and I will get to that later.
My second issue is the size and weight. For pros using big and expensive lenses on their more expensive full frame cameras, these probably aren't issues for them. I'm using this on an A6300 and I understand that it in ways defeats the purpose of a small aps-c camera but I couldn't resist this fast prime, even if was going to be a 76mm on my camera. This lens is big and it is heavy but not big or heavy enough to deduct a star considering what big and heavy means with this lens.
The lens may be big and heavy but it is amazingly sturdy and well made. The metal construction feels strong and it mounts very snug and sturdy. The focus ring is smooth and offers what I feel is the perfect amount of resistance. It is similar to other Zeiss lenses I have used such as the 24 1.8 Zeiss aps-c lens. The grooves or knurling on the focus is tight but appropriately grippy. The aperture ring also feels good and I appreciate the option to remove the clicks between f-stops with a switch.
Considering I am not a pro photographer I don't want to attempt an in depth review of the image quality considering many smarter people regarding cameras and lenses are already doing that. Also, this review is applicable to full frame cameras but I am using this on an A6300 until I step up to full frame one day in the future. The image quality is amazing and sharper than any other lens I have had the pleasure of using. Even at f1.4 it has great corner to corner clarity and sharpness and stopping down just a few stops makes it even sharper. The image quality and color is what you would expect from Zeiss glass.
The bokeh on this lens is very smooth and creamy as it melts the background. The 1.4 shots just look great and the bokeh balls are nice and rounded. I can't imagine better bokeh from a lens unless you are paying significantly more for it like the GM Series or Canon L. In my limited experience with it so far it does show a bit of purple fringing in high contrast areas but far less than I'm used to with other lenses and nothing that isn't easily corrected in post.
The focus on the A6300 is fast and accurate. It runs into trouble in less than ideal lighting conditions but once you've played around with it you quickly understand how to get it to hit focus better in lower light and what to look for. The lack of image stabilization will diminish the use slightly on camera bodies like the A6300 that don't have image stabilization but with 1.4 you still have great opportunities for good looking low light shots.
Overall it seems to work great with the A6300. Of course you get 75mm focal length which puts it in the 85mm portrait range where it is great. It is not as versatile as a true 50mm focal length but it is still usable in a good variety of situations. Of course with the f1.4 it makes it great for low light shooting but you might have your back against the wall for indoor shooting. I'm sure the lens is far more capable than what the aps-c sensor of the A6300 can handle but it has to be one of the finest lenses you can get for the system if the money isn't too much of a concern for you.
If you can get over the price and the size/weight, this is a fantastic high quality lens with weatherproofing that produces amazing images. Whether or not this is the fast prime you need will be up to you but if you know what you're getting I can say this definitely returns on the investment.
I don't like to use personal pictures for my reviews so no portraits but I will post a few to give an idea of clarity and bokeh despite the limitations of posting pictures on Amazon.

I fell in love with the 1.4 bokeh on the 85 so when I heard this lens was coming out, I opted to wait since I've been in the market for a "nifty-fifty". So far this lens has been fun to work with and it is truly a versatile lens for the sony e-mount due to its 1.4 stop and its focal length.

One tiny thing - I would have preferred a tab bit stiffer focus ring. But do not get me wrong, that is NOT a deal breaker at all.

The Zeiss f/1.4 50mm lens is basically the Sony version of that legendary Canon lens and it does the job perfectly.
Image sharpness is incredible and you will get some very amazing background blurs and bokeh from this lens.
The only downsides are the price (unfortunate reality for every great lens) and the size. Compared to the Canon 50mm this lens is huge and it actually weighs more than my camera.
