I can feel for the person who didn't like that it is a onetime use only, but I'm not sure I would want to be unnecessarily climbing down an emergency ladder two stories for practice anyway.
The instructions DO say one time use, but that may be "actually" using it, not "deploying" for a test run. They should be clearer about this. I imaging the single use (which is clearly stated in the verbiage right here on Amazon) is mostly for the ladder actually taking weight. It's assembled with nylon straps studded to the aluminum rungs. By the time a few people, especially if they are heavy use it, it's probably stressed at the attachment points or may have a cut in a strap from deploying over brick or something sharp.
The release strap is Velcro and I don't see any reason this cannot be deployed, then gathered back up carefully and re-strapped. I might try that someday.
I have one of these on each end of the house upstairs and I take all houseguests to each location and explain the "drill" as well as show them where fire extinguishers are.
You should have fire extinguishers in any house just like you should have smoke detectors, and you should have some sort of escape ladders if more than one story. Granted, someone not in good shape may not be able to climb out a window backwards but at least you have a shot. Someone else could get out first and help break the fall of those who can't climb down.
I don't know why, but I have become more fire conscious as I get older. I guess it started when I set up cooking stations in my garage and started thinking about the possible dangers. Next thing you know I have wall mounted fire extinguishers in strategic locations and escape ladders.
House fires can be tragic. It's bad enough to lose nearly everything but you can be thankful if everyone gets out with their life. You will know why you prepared at that point for sure.
It seems pretty sturdy and the hook is deep enough to grip well. Measure how wide your window opens! Ours just barely fits.
Ours doesn't stay completely compacted like in the picture, so we just keep it stashed under the bed.
(note: my son wasn't sure if this would drop him all the way down, as his bedroom is 3 stories up, but he saw 2 options 2) that it would allow him to escape from the guest bedroom upstairs to a patio 2 story below or in an emergency he could climb down from his master bedroom and then hang on and drop the rest of the way (he's 6'4") to the ground. He said that even having to drop 8' or so is a lot better than being caught on the 3rd floor unable to escape! Good philosophy!
