Editorial Reviews

Blind Pilot turns loss into inspiration on its new album 'And Then Like Lions' (ATO Records). Written and composed by Israel Nebeker over the course of three years, the record is a transcendent, cathartic response to the loss of his father and end of a 13-year relationship. Blind Pilot teamed up with producer Tucker Martine (The Decemberists, Neko Case, My Morning Jacket) and the album was mixed by Peter Katis (The National, Interpol, Kurt Vile).

To me this is a tremendously underappreciated band. Love their music. Love their vibe. Well thought lyrics. Excellent musicians. Love the lead singers voice. A truly great listen

I hope that Blind Pilot never makes us wait 5 years for a new record again, but in this case the result is definitely worth the wait. And Then Like Lions is a great album. Its baseline is melancholy and contemplative with beautiful and poetic lyrics that really inspire self-reflection. From this melancholy baseline, several tracks briefly give the listener a more upbeat sound, ultimately crescendoing to the title track, Like Lions, which is already my favorite Blind Pilot song. As usual, Blind Pilot melds many sounds ranging from orchestral to ethereal to folk acoustic in lush harmony. I highly recommend this album--as well as their prior albums (3 Rounds and a Sound; We Are the Tide).

Just, I mean, its...yeah. So good, so powerful, such gorgeous lyrics and harmonies. I'm going to two of their shows, and am looking forward to feeling the live music as well. The first song is such a gut-punch for anyone who has felt bereft, or jealous of where their ex is now..."Packed Powder" is a little gem of a song. "I want to see how it takes me," sings Israel, and he gets us all ready for how to move ahead despite all those dashed hopes and the realization that we aren't yet what we hoped we'd be.

I originally bought the translucent gold version of this, but it was very noisy. Lots of pops & ticks. This opaque white version sounds much better. The only reason it doesn't get five stars is because the nice full-color printed inner sleeve is completely missing in this version. It only comes with a plain white inner sleeve. For a graphic designer like myself, that's a major bummer.

I was looking for something different and happened to hear a bit of Umpqua Rushing. Israel has such a beautiful voice, calming and relaxing.

I won't give a detailed review. You can find that elsewhere. Blind Pilot fans will rejoice in this return. This is music making of the highest order, as we've come to expect from Blind Pilot. I love the concoction of personal story and natural scenery/events that the lyrics wander through.
