This *is* the original concept album that you remember. Same recordings, same performances. It was not "patched together from various performances," as some have misunderstood.
What ALW means in the liner notes is that the original 16-track tapes were mostly lost, so it couldn't be re-mixed - but mixing and mastering are not the same thing. This CD was re-*mastered* from the 2-track mixes that were used for the original LP. It is *those* tapes he found among his personal belongings, and it was those tapes that were used as the original sources for this CD.
I believe the confusion is in part stemming from the fact that the word "master" is used in several different contexts in the recording industry. Take this situation for example: you can refer to the 16-track tape that the live sessions were recorded directly onto as "masters," you can refer to the two-track tape the mixdown was recorded to as "masters" (for clarity, often called "2-track-masters'), and "master" is also a verb that describes the final processing the 2-track masters go through before they're committed to LP, CD, DVD, etc. Mastering involves extreme fine-tuning of EQ, compression, and various other processes that cater to each specific playback medium. For example, the same two-track "masters" would be "mastered" differently for LP than they would for CD, because those mediums have different technical strengths and weaknesses, and you get the best end results when you cater to those.
He also pointed out that the original US pressing had a duller sound than the British one (though he never explains why), so part of his goal was to bring back the brightness and clarity that he preferred in the British version. That said, one of the reasons I believe so many people seem skeptical that this is the same recording is that they're hearing so much more detail for the first time, that they think they're noticing things that weren't actually there before. Like how rough some of the background vocals are, and the various "dodgy edits" he refers to. It was always like that - it just wasn't as easy to tell on the LP.
If some people don't like the way the re-mastering sounds, that's fine. But make no mistake, it is not "bad" -- it's just not exactly as they remember it, and that seems to be very disorienting to some people. In fact it's quite good. If you're a fan of the original LP, you should, in theory, like this. But don't expect it to sound earth-shatteringly different - remastering frequently doesn't - and unless you're playing it on a good system, you might not even notice any difference at all.
Personally, I'm thrilled and grateful to have this, my favorite version, with new life breathed into it.

Thanks to its included libretto and about 4,000 listenings, I still remember every single word within this brown covered gatefold LP, one of the greatest "soundtracks" ever released. In my opinion, this remains the best work of its famous authors.
Once banned as sacriligious by the BBC (according to Ted Neely, the film Judas), in the U.S. JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR reached #1 on Billboard's 200. It represents a unique example of theater imitating vinyl. After selling millions of copies worldwide, what had only been a studio recording was expanded by lyricist Tim Rice and composer Andrew Lloyd Webber into a stageshow. After playing to sellout crowds again in many countries, "Superstar" was adapted to film in 1973 . Barry Dennen (Pilate) and Yvonne Elliman (Mary Magdelene) are the only original studio cast members to appear in Norman Jewison's picture.
MAIN CAST--
Ian Gillan - Jesus Christ
Murray Head - Judas Iscariot
Yvonne Elliman - Mary Magdalene
Victor Brox - Caiaphas, High Priest
Brian Keith - Annas
John Gustafson - Simon Zealotes
Barry Dennen - Pontius Pilate
Paul Davis - Peter
Mike d'Abo - King Herod
That eerie synthesizer in the Overture (and elsewhere) is played by Andrew Lloyd Webber himself. The guitarist is listed as Steve Vaughn, but it's not Stevie Ray. He was only 16 when this was recorded.

Despite the VERY MINOR problems that various people have described, THIS ONE - THE 2012 RE-MASTER - is the BEST AVAILABLE JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR RECORDING AT THIS TIME. I have listened to it DOZENS OF TIMES for a week - now that I have a set that does not have manufacturing glitches - and the sound is FULL and PRESENT and ROBUST and, I repeat, ALTOGETHER THE BEST VERSION OF THE ORIGINAL BROWN CONCEPT ALBUM AVAILABLE AT THIS TIME. And it does sound great the majority of the time. At times the vocals are so present that they sound as if they are coming from the room itself - not the sound system. THAT IS GOOD RE-MASTERING. This is the best available JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR recording on CD and according to the "liner notes" - due to various circumstances - this is as good as it's ever gonna get. If that is the case then it's not nearly as bleak as it might have been - this set will make you very happy. I am glad we have it! I am glad that is has been re-mastered and it is still a remarkably effective piece of musical theatre.
(NOTE: It appears that a lot of people are trying to sell their JCS sets as re-mastered when they are not. Look for this...on the first page of the (new) little booklet, the 18-page insert that includes all the lyrics, in the liner notes written by Andrew Lloyd Webber, he writes, "When I was asked to re-master "Jesus Christ Superstar" I was excited." He then goes on for 5 (very short) paragraphs about the re-mastering. No ALW notes - not the re-master. Okay? Caveat Emptor!)
