This machine is the best bang for your buck. It arrived in a huge box; it took a bit over an hour for me to put it together. All parts were fitting perfectly; except few parts that were quite obscure in the manual, but it was nothing that a bit of logic can fix.
Overall it is rock solid; every part is heavy; made of metal that feel solid while you handle it. The screw seem flimsy but so far they support every part of the machine without problems; I have been using daily for about 30 min a day; same for my wife; and so far the machine works fine without strange noises, rattlling or inconsistencies.
I have it on carpet floor; keep in mind that the machine may not feel stable, but so far it didn't ever give me the feeling that it would move. Probably the best is to have it on solid ground instead of carpet.
The machine operation is pretty easy; jump on and push the start button; it will begin to track your progress. The first time that you power it up, it will ask for date and time. The main issue with the console are 2: the first is that it is not illuminated; so if the machine is in a dark area, you will barely see what is going on. The second is that it makes a loud BEEP every button that you push, and every 2 minutes that you exercise....the beep is louder than the actual stride noise; just to give you an idea. I wish it would be possible to turn it off or turn it down, but I found no way to do so.
The moving parts are well assembled; once you put enough torque on the screws, they just stick together without any strange noise; the wheel slide on the meta base at every stride, and the main resistance wheel turn also very quietly; most of the noise is the weight shift that you put on the machine; otherwise it is the quietest thing ever heard...I use it at night and nobody hear anything in the house.
There are enough programs to give you good variety; although the resistance may vary, the incline doesn't, since it has to be changed manually and you need to interrupt the exercise to do so. the operation is simple, just lift the base and it will click in place. to lower the incline, you need to lift the red handle.
The console has a small fan; mostly for a bit of air, but do not expect much air flow. It has a jack connector to plug your device to the speakers, which is good, although there is no strong amplifier so it won't change your room in a disco :)
The nice thing is the usb connector, so you wont't waste your device battery while doing your workout. There is also a heart rate system included in teh console; you just need to hold the center handles to get your heart BPM.
The stride feel shorter than the professional Precor; also the wheel is on the front, which means that the incline of the machine overall is different. This result in a different set of muscles used for the workout; you may feel the difference and feel tired earlier, but it is just a matter of getting used to. I would rather prefer a Precor, but I can't afford 5K for a used one, and a room just for the machine.
Overall it is a great item; the price is right; it offer what it promise, and I hope the reliability will also be acceptable.
The good...very smooth, quiet and fun to use. Delivers a great workout. Lower levels still require effort and will have you sweating in no time. Assembly is straight forward. Should take 2 hours or so. DO NOT LOSE THE SILICONE LUBRICANT IT COMES WITH AS YOU WILL NEED IT, see below.
The not so good...machine requires repeated lubrication of rails that the rollers slide back and forth on. It will begin to sqeak if not lubricated regularly. For me it has been every 2-3 times I use the machine. I use if for 30-60 min each time. I would imagine that continued use while squeaking would mean too much friction on the rollers which could damage them over time. I purchased some extra silicone lubricant. Works like a charm and keeps everything smooth and quiet. Also, the handles seem to be too close together for me as when I grab the heart rate handles that are fixed, the handles that are moving will hit your arms if you don't pay attention.
The frustrating...the calorie/mileage tracker is way off. I was aware of this possibilty reading reviews of others prior to purchase and it appears to be a programming issue with the console. I've tested on machines in the gym and this machine registers less than half the distance/calories burned over the same time and effort. Customer support has yet to get back with me on a potential fix.
Conclusion...if your main goal is to have a machine that is fun to use and will provide a good workout while watching tv, is fairly easy to assemble, and affordable (got mine for $577), pick one up especially if you can find it for this price. If you are expecting the console to track calories and miles accurately, you may be dissapointed. I hope this is helpful.
Most of the assembly is done with machine screws having a 6mm Allen head. I used the supplied Allen key to assemble the first two parts and it was more work than it should have been, the threads are stiff and the fit of the Allen head is tight -making it difficult to insert and remove the key for each turn. I jumped in the car and bought a 3/8" socket with a 6mm Allen drive in it at the home store for $1.97. That allowed me to use a socket wrench to complete assembly and it was a good decision. The screws holding this machine together require more torque than is practical to apply using a 3" Allen key. I imagine that using the supplied tool would result in some screws coming out during use. With a 10" socket wrench I was able to solidly torque in the fasteners and the job went much faster because of the ratchet action of the socket wrench. There are six wavy spring washers used behind some of the articulating bearings and the instructions don't show this very well. They are identified as part "F" in the instructions, watch out for them. If you miss putting them in, you have to disassemble a greasy joint to install them later. Another potential (but minor) trap concerns the handle bars. Before fully tightening them, each must be swung fully to the left or the right. There is some play in the screw holes and failing to swing them each fully to the outside of this play results in a different grip angle for each handlebar (like a cow with one crooked horn). The instructions just show arrows to the outside, it's not very clear. I had to re-position one of mine.
I have used the machine only for a test session. The MP3 speakers sound good. The fan is adequate. I was able to set the date and time intuitively. Oh, and they include a double-ended stereo mini-phono plug so you're all set to plug your MP3 player into their amplified speakers. The machine felt solid and quiet and I look forward to tomorrow morning's "jog."
UPDATE: I found out the hard way that the handle bars angle in at the top and can occupy the same space as your forearm if you reach for the control panel while they are moving. I got hit (painfully) while reaching for my MP3 player and its phono plug was ripped from the socket as my arm was pushed backward. I'd call this a design flaw. A user should be able to access the control panel without risk of injury while using the machine.
UPDATE 2: I've had this machine for two months now and I upgraded my rating from four to five stars. I think it's an excellent value for a home machine. I am completely used to the stride length and height and I think that the mileage count is more accurate than on the machine I had been using at the gym. The distance vs. time seems to better correlate to the days when I actually ran for exercise (back when I had knees). I strongly recommend this elliptical.
UPDATE 3: I'm really thinking about taking away one star on account of the problem with the location of the handle bars mentioned in "Update 1" (above). I can't operate the control panel or change the song on my MP3 player (on the shelf of the control panel) without getting bopped in the elbow by the damn handle bars. I did a test today and ran each bar back to its rearmost position, then tested to see what I could reach on the control panel without my elbow touching the handlebar. Each hand could reach nothing except the bottom half of the speaker located on the opposite side! I'm average height 5'8" and I could reach NOTHING on the control panel without interference with the moving handlebars. What I have been doing is pulling my elbows in to an uncomfortable angle, then reaching up the middle to make changes on the panel. Still, I get hit sometimes. Neither can I rest my hands on the top of the small handle bars that contain the "heart monitor" pickups. This also results in getting my outer elbows whacked. Changing the shape of the handle bar bend so that they don't bow inward so much would fix this. So might relocating the handlebar attachment holes. With this issue fixed, the machine would be a perfect "10."

Putting the machine together: It's much easier if you have help for putting on the two heavy parts, the rest you can do yourself easily without much struggle but I'd still suggest having someone around if you can to make things easier.
The workout: Is really good. Like most work out machines I've seen, the distance and calorie tracker aren't exact. It's better to use a website to determine the calories burned. The resistance levels are great, there are a lot of programmable workouts, but I tend to stick the adjusting it myself when I want a harder or lighter work out.
Delivery: Was very fast. Think it came in a 2-3 days.
The machine is quiet, but mine squeaks a bit.. I'm sure if I put some oil or something on it it would stop the noise, but it's not that bad even with it (didn't have the squeak at the beginning, it got it as i used it more)
Overall I'm very happy with this machine. I wanted a gym quality work out at home, and between this elliptical and some dumbbells you can do a lot.
Assembly was straightforward; it took me 1/2 day. There is an assembly manual supplied with the machine but no operating manual. Maybe this was by mistake but I think not, as the assembly manual refers the purchaser to a website for the manual. This seems unnecessarily cheap to me.
The foot pads are bigger than the 431 and set higher off the floor. I have a 7 ft 7 in high ceiling (2m 30cm) and I am 6 ft tall (1m 83 cm) and there is no problem with clearance. The resistance levels are not the same as the 431; a 4 or 5 setting on the 430 equates to about a 9 or 10 on the 431. The handles are set in from those on the 431, so making adjustments to the controls (eg increasing resistance) means timing it right so your arms do not collide with the handles' movement. The fan is better than the 431-multiple speeds and better positioned. Like the 431, backward pedaling works just as well as forward pedaling, and the machine does not reset. I use a chest strap heart rate monitor so the HRM on the 430 is unnecessary. Some ellipticals sense if a chest HRM is in use and record the heart rate; the 430 requires the person to grasp the inner handles.
In summary, this is a good machine with some shortcomings but good price for what I got. Time will tell whether the 430 holds up as well as the 431 did.
Omg, My whole family just loves this machine.. being in Canada it becomes difficult to go out in winters.. but This is a our savior.. First off, it took 2 people and half day to assemble. But it was very easy to assemble.. Performance wise it is so easy , smooth , no noise.. and shows instant results in form of distance covered, time and calories burnt. Plus built in preset programs, speakers , i pad dock, usb port, audio input ports, built in fan makes it fun and easy to use..
I have owned this machine for about 20 months, I am a casual user (not a gym buff), and have maintained it in pristine condition since its arrival.
Pro's:
~ Rather cheap, when on sale.
~ The metal frame parts seem well built.
~ Speakers are... good enough. Not great, not bad. They work quite well for the 'average' person who isn't an audiophile.
Con's:
~ Putting it together is... a nightmare, especially the 'arms'. You are required to attach it to the wheel (bottom attachment) and the upper arms, at the same time while holding the quite heavy, multi-jointed 'leg' that forms the footpad, arms, etc. The catch? It has to be precise. Perfectly precise. One half of a MM off? It will not move. With two of us (I have put together 4 machines like this prior), it took us 2 hours to finally get both arms attached!
~ Cheapness. The 'cup tray' in the front, will snap at the screws with even the slightest bump. The Fan, is limited in scope, refuses to stay aimed up, and has a pitiful output (along with a chemical smell over 1 1/2 years later).
~ Faultiness. Mine arrived with squeaking wheels so loud people in the other room to me, complained and I had to wear headsets to stop it. Lubrication only aided for a mere day or two, a common complaint with this machine.
~ Mine arrived with a faulty charge, in his the wire had to be pulled tight to get any power! I was asked for 30$ to have a new one sent to me. 3 months ago, I found a replacement for 9$ that worked brilliantly...! until it began to power on, and off, on and off... I realize now, the entire plugin to power the elliptical, is faulty not the charger!
~ Terrible design. To 'balance' the elliptical at the center, one will adjust two adjustable 'feet' that you spin until tightening. Simple, no? Except it is held by a nut attached to a screw, and this nut then 'screws' into a part in the frame. If that nut for example, moves down the screw making it too short to adjust the foot - you have to LIFT the entire elliptical up onto its front end, and try to reach with one hand to try and adjust this nut back into place. of course, having another person help is wise, but a terrible design.
Further on terrible design, the front wheels can be unscrewed. Excellent!... except the bolts that hold them on, fall off INSIDE the frame. I have been unable to get these front wheel covers off to retrieve and fix this, after nearly breaking a screw driver trying to gently pry it off.
Finally, the adjustable 'incline' slider - is a death trap. It is a separate piece of plastic that attaches to the wheel casing and can be PUSHED in, meaning if someone is on it and it decides to slip back - you'll be dropped from full incline violently to the ground. I nearly killed myself (figuratively, I hope) when this occurred and I refuse to use that death trap any longer.
I could go on, but I felt those are the major 'game changing issues'.
Everything I have stated here is the factual truth, and I have not been paid nor influenced by any other individual or company.
Edit:
As of June 14th, 2016 - I have been in... 'battle' with Schwinn to have this issue remedied. To clarify my issue and events...
~ I noticed a 'metallic squeak' in the wheel, and got concerned ceasing use of the machine. I attempted to open the paneling, only to be shocked as the screws holding it together - stripped apart into chunks of metal from a hand screw driver I was using, making it impossible to open without literally, tearing the paneling off.
~ I contacted Schwinn (which they did respond quickly, about 1 day) and explained the noise, the stripped screws and issues related. They insisted I call them, when prior, i had made it very clear I had no access to a phone to call them upon (unless I want to run to a pay phone? hah). Again, they responded with the line they can't help me, because no phone. (which is... confusing as I described the sound as I would tell them on the phone).
~ I decided to pursue having a repair man come take a look, asking if they have individuals who could do so. They did! Excellent, I needed a tune up, just to make sure nothing else is going funky, right? a hundred bucks would be fine to get this fixed and tuned up.
...I was told to have someone JUST visit, it would be 280-300$ (Counting taxes and this is in USD, while I reside in Canada). Then further, if a part needed repairing, I would again have to pay 280-300$ for the second trip - presuming the part is covered by warranty. And they warned further, they may need a third visit.
...to note, this machine BRAND NEW on Amazon.ca, a week ago - was 665$ CDN. For the cost to repair a single issue, I could BUY a brand new machine. Does that sound sane to you?
~ I asked to speak to their supervisor, hoping they understand the... silliness of this situation, an individual named Tracy responded the next day. this was 15 days ago.
I have received NO response from their supervisor in response to my complaints or warranty claims. I have been ignored outright.
do NOT buy this hunk of scrap metal!
