Before That Night: Caine & Addison Duet, Book One of Two (Unfinished Love series, 1) Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 4,675 ratings

-- Now a USA TODAY Bestseller! --

Before that night, Addison Milan had been just a college dropout secretly raising her two young siblings in a beat-up minivan she'd bought with her first semester's tuition refund--the only money her addict mother hadn't taken off with when she'd abandoned them nearly two years ago.

Before that night, Caine Spencer had been just a rough, gruff cop sent to check out the phoned-in claims of suspected child neglect involving the same woman he'd met just months prior when she'd first served him the city's worst diner coffee...which he'd been drinking daily ever since.

Before that night, Addison would never have thought the man she'd been fighting hard not to fall for--her only friend in her new shadow of a life--would be in a position to rip her family apart.

Before that night, Caine would never have believed any woman could make him fall head over heels, let alone make him feel so damn compelled to look the other way when it came to his job.

Then that one perfect night changed everything.

"Hot, sweet, and filled with tender moments, Violet Duke writes heroes who make me swoon!" -- New York Times bestselling author Kendall Ryan

BEFORE THAT NIGHT (Bk 1 of 2) chronicles the events that take place seven years prior to EVERY NIGHT WITHOUT YOU (Bk 2 of 2), Caine & Addison's story of love, sacrifice, and the lengths one will run--and chase--when their past threatens their future.

NOTE: Each of the four couples in the Unfinished Love series have TWO books (duets) that take place years apart. Each duet is a two-part second chance romance, meaning each couple is separated after their first book and reunited in the second book of their duet. As noted in the title, this is Book ONE of TWO; the second book in this duet reunites this couple seven years later, and concludes their story.

NEW YORK TIMES and USA TODAY bestselling author Violet Duke is a former university professor who loves being on the other side of the page now writing emotion-rich stories with fun, everyday characters and sweet, sexy match-ups. With over a million books sold since her debut in 2013, Violet's wonderful readers have put all four of her feel-good, laugh & cry series on U.S. bestseller lists, as well as the Amazon Top 10, Apple iBooks Top 5, and Barnes & Noble Top 5 charts.

When she isn't feeding her book-a-day addiction, Violet enjoys doing far too many things without checking the directions first (often with outrageous power tools she has no business operating), and cooking impossible-to-replicate 'special edition' dishes that laugh in the face of recipes. She lives in Hawai'i with her kids (Violet & Duke) and Mr. Violet Duke (their ringleader), with a PJs-and-rubber-slippers work dress code she takes very seriously.

The Unfinished Love Duets are addictive and Violet Duke is a diabolical pusher of beautifully romantic and compelling stories. "Before That Night" spans a two year time period. Addison Milan's the 18 year old sister to a younger brother and sister. She's caring for since their drug addict mother abandoned them. She doing everything possible to ensure they aren't separated. She's strong, selfless, and protective. Two years later she meets Caine, who's the product of a picture perfect great family. He's a dedicated police officer, as clean as they come and he believes whole heartedly in the system. He such the very delightful Alpha hero. Violet Duke brings these two characters who are perfectly compatible personality-wise together. Unfortunately one is living a lie and if the other knew about it he'd need to do the right thing. Which would tear her family apart and he'd lose her forever.
"Before That Night" is book one of a Duet which means it has a Cliffhanger ending. So be aware. Luckily by the time I review this book two, "Every Night Without You" will be out! Violet Duke's writing is, as I've said before, is truly addictive. It's light, intriguing, with characters who are charming. There's an intermingling of characters from her Cactus Creek series some of which will have their own Unfinished Love Duets. The writing in this book is crisp and captivating. The story is romantic and thrilling. The characters are delightful and engaging. The pace is steady and quick. I devoured "Before That Night" like contraband chocolate at fat camp.

Prior to seeing this book on the Kindle bestsellers list, I hadn't heard of Violet Duke before but the story line sounded intriguing and sometimes I find a hidden gem of a book by just taking a chance on a new (to me) author. At right around 200 pages, Before This Night is a fairly quick read and it's part of the two-part Unfinished Love series with the second part due out on July 7, 2016. This book is part of the New Adult/romance genre and I feel that's accurate since the protagonists are in their twenties and there is a decent amount of romance and chemistry that satisfied my love for romances.

Addison Milan is twenty years old and has the very difficult job of caring for her two younger siblings, Tanner and Kylie, after their drug addict mother runs off with her boyfriend. Addison can't stand the thought of having her brother and sister turned over to social services so she does everything she can to give them the best home she can, meaning she constantly works at her waitressing job at Joe's Diner to earn money so they can move into an apartment instead of living in a rundown van. While working she meets Caine Spencer, a cop who keeps coming back to the diner for the awful, watered-down coffee just so he can spend a few minutes every day talking with Addison. It's during this time he can't help but be drawn to her and learns a little more about her life. No matter what he learns about Addison's life, it doesn't deter him from caring about her more and more every day.

Overall, I liked this book and found the romance between Addison and Caine sweet and beautiful. Unfortunately, since the book is so short, there isn't as much character development as I like to see in books so I don't really feel we get to know the characters as well as we could have. I think I loved how Addison works tirelessly to care for her siblings so hard more than the romance itself even though the romance was pretty sweet and had my heart melting. This book is a bit slow moving at first but there is faster build-up around the 60% mark. I thought this book was good but not great and I have already purchased the first book in the Cactus Creek series since I love small-town romances so I definitely want to see what else Violet Duke has to offer. The romance in this book is sweet and there are some tough subjects Addison has to deal with. There is a cliffhanger to this book so if you are bothered by those, I'd suggest waiting until closer to July 7th of this summer before reading this book. Again, I feel this book was enjoyable if you are looking for a mostly light and sweet romance but I didn't love it. I'm still interested in reading the second part just to see what happens though and I want to read some of Violet Duke's other series to see how I like those.

A cliffhanger!! And a masterful one at that! Violet Duke has managed to write one heck of a start to a new series! Each sibling's story is in two parts. Book 1 takes place & then Book 2 takes place a number of years later so the scene was set for a cliffhanger. Addison has had a horrible life growing up & has ended up raising her brother & sister for all their lives. However, her druggie mother took off with her boyfriend & abandoned them. They don't miss her except then they became homeless. Caine is a police officer that comes into the diner for meals & is interested in Addison. He begins to see Addison but she has to keep her secrets around him. If he found out they are homeless & that she doesn't have legal custody of the kids, he'll have to turn them in & the kids will be put into foster care. With all of this going on, Addison manages to catch the eye of a crazy stalker. Will she trust Caine with the truth? What happens with the stalker?

Wow! There is a lot going on in this book. Violet has created complex characters with such distinct personalities. Her writing manages to bring you right into the scene with the characters. Her descriptive use of language makes each scene very realistic & the emotions the characters are feeling believable. You can sense the intense yearning Caine feels when he looks at Addison. This book is a testament to what lengths an older sibling will go to in order to keep their family together no matter what. Violet pulled me into the story immediately with Addison's desperation as she lied to Joe to get a job so she could afford to attempt to keep the kids & the twists, turns & suspense of the plot keep me involved until the end. I couldn't put it down & at the end, all I could say is NOOO!!! It can't end here!!

I highly recommend this book! A heroine struggling with difficult circumstances, a secret, a stalker, and a real, genuine connection between the two main characters. What more could you ask for? A heart warming page turner. At the end, I needed to read more about Addison and Caine and immediately purchased book 2.
