I took on a new job recently developing a legacy product in Delphi 7, coming from a VB / .Net background, and wanted some good references for the topic. After picking up a couple of books, I heard and read that Marco Cantu` was considered one of the best authorities on the topic, and I received an email from Amazon referring to this book, so I ordered a copy. I've been very impressed! Several topics I've worked with, but didn't know a whole lot about (action lists, visual forms inheritance) are explained in detail, including how the Delphi compiler and Windows works with them in the background. I'm about 25% through the book, and now am eager to read the entire volume, just to get extra insights.

This book has helped my job considerably, and I would recommend it to both beginning Delphi programmers, as well as experienced coders who want to understand the inner working of Delphi.

Older book but Marco Cantu wrote it so it is of high quality.

This book is a very good desktop reference. Even though it is a little dated, it gives clear examples.

This is the best general purpose Delphi Book on the Market. Mr. Cantu again shows that he knows Delphi as he continues this series of books.
Ignore what adiv says; every review he writes is negative.
If you are serious about Delphi programming you need this book!

This book is more of the reference type, not one you should try reading page by page as a tutorial. If that is what you are looking for, I recommend any beginner to check out 'Delphi in a Nutshell' , by O'reilly. Mastering Delphi 7 seemed to perfectly explain the IDE(Integrated Devlopment Enviornment), but over a course of about 800 pages. I dont think that the Delphi programming language was discussed enough in this book, it was more like a in depth way of explaining every feature of Delphi 7, the program.

This book is an excellent reference to the new stuff in Delphi 7, and still gives a worthwhile overview of the system capabilities.
It isn't a tyros book, and doesn't claim to be. That said, the text is clearly written. If you are proficient in any other modern language, this book will prove useful.
I would have preferred more detail on cross-platform development, and a cleaner separation of abstract database topics from the various implementations thereof. For example, if you're using dbExpress, it is worth ploughing thru the IBX and ADO sections also.
Nonetheless, highly recommended.
