Product Description
“How come nobody’s ever tried to be a superhero?” When Dave Lizewski – ordinary New York teenager and rabid comic-book geek – dons a green-and-yellow Internet-bought wetsuit to become the no-nonsense vigilante Kick-Ass, he soon finds an answer to his own question: because it hurts. But, over coming all the odds, the eager yet inexperienced Dave quickly becomes a phenomenon, capturing the imagination of the public. However, he’s not the only superhero out there – the fearless and highly trained father-daughter crime-fighting duo, Big Daddy and Hit-Girl, have been slowly but surely taking down the criminal empire of local mafioso Frank D’Amico. And, as Kick-Ass gets drawn into their no-holds-barred world of bullets and bloodletting with Frank’s son Chris, now reborn as Kick-Ass’s arch-nemesis Red Mist, the stage is set for a final showdown between the forces of good and evil, in which the DIY hero will have to live up to his name. Or die trying…

The cinematic equivalent of a half case of Red Bull chased with donuts, Kick-Ass is a giddy, violent experience--and not your average superhero movie. Based on the comic book by Mark Millar and John Romita Jr., it offers a set of heroes who are decidedly without superpowers: Dave Lizewski (Aaron Johnson) decides he'll be just like a comic-book character, and puts on a ridiculous green suit to fight crime as the mysterious Kick-Ass. Luckily, somebody else had the same idea and comes along to rescue the incompetent crusader: Big Daddy (Nicolas Cage) and his daughter Hit Girl (Chloe Moretz), who also happen to be running around town wearing masks and vanquishing evil. And here we have the movie's masterstroke: Hit Girl, a pint-sized preteen who slaughters bad guys and swears like a sailor on leave (and was the focus of a measure of controversy when the movie was released). The main target of our heroes is a gangster (Mark Strong, Sherlock Holmes), whose neglected son (Christopher Mintz-Plasse, McLovin from Superbad) figures he might just pull on a costume himself and become… Red Mist! (One of the many funny things about Kick-Ass is that the superhero names are hopelessly lame.) Director Matthew Vaughn is operating at the same glib level as his Layer Cake, with cutesy song cues galore and a freewheeling appetite for cartoon violence. This means the movie's high wears off quickly, but it does get high--a crazy, hilarious (and by the way: decidedly R-rated) kick. All that, plus Nicolas Cage executes a deadly Adam West imitation when he pulls on his cape and cowl. That's entertainment. --Robert Horton

The movie boasts a strong cast, including Nicholas Cage and a very young Chole Grace Moretz as "Big Daddy" and "Hit Girl" respectively, which are most definitely a takeoff on Batman and Robin. Moretz's character is the main reason that the movie is not for kids as pretty much every word out of her mouth is a swear word. You could tell she was having a ball being able to use the kind of language she was not allowed to in "real life" at the time. The rest of the case included Christopher Mintz-Plasse who is best known for his role as McLovin in the movie Superbad, Lyndsy Fonseca, Evan Peters, and Mark Strong, who basically plays a mob boss. The movie is over the top violent (mostly with tongue firmly planted in cheek) and does have some sexual situations, but no outright nudity.
For those who get the Blu-Ray, the movie looks and sounds great in the HD format. The extras include a commentary track with the director and a BonusView mode that combines the director commentary track with clips of interviews with members of the cast and crew and behind-the-scenes footage. There is also a making-of documentary that clocks in at just under two hours, but it is split into four parts so you don't have to watch the entire thing in one sitting. Then there is a twenty-minute feature on the comic book the movie was adapted from, a photo gallery, and trailers for the movie, including the Red Band trailer.
The movie is definitely not for everyone. As I said it is very violent and certainly having a twelve-year-old spouting profanity and killing people left and right will turn a lot of people off to the movie. So, if you are one of those, it is best not to even consider this. If, however, you are generally a fan of superhero/comic book movies and also like spoof movies (which this sort of is, although not in the "scary movie" franchise) and do not take it too seriously, this is a fun movie.
I was talking with some co-workers and they told me they thought it would be like "Mystery Men". Though I like that movie too, this movie has more in common with "the Matrix" than "Mystery Men". I told them that before I saw it, and I was right. This movie is a kind of a kind of a Kill Bill version of Spiderman with more humor added. There is lots of comic relief, and that comedy is essential to the plot and pacing of the movie as a whole, but this is NOT simply a comedy. It IS, however, a boatload of FUN!
It is essentially the meshing of two stories that both have the same premise: "What would happen if someone actually tried to be a super hero?"
In one story we get the tale of an everyman high school kid who loves comic books. He wants to "put on a suit and help people". He's a dreamer that means well, but is generally incompetent. So this part of the story is based on what happens when his fantasy gets smacked in the face by the cold hard fist of reality.
The second story is the tale of a competent and smart man that is horribly wronged and seeks revenge. The catch is he has a very young daughter. Like Lone Wolf and Cub he decides to take her with him on his planned journey to hell, only he is smart enough to give her the tools she will need to survive the trip. This part of the story is simple and pure, and you have seen it many times before. The film makers wisely don't embelish it to much, but we do get some exposition and notworthy scenes. Most of this story is left in subtext.
So, what happens when the two stories collide? AWESOMENESS! This is written and performed so well that the stories simply mesh without clashing. I have never seen anything pull this off so well. There are plenty of gritty semi-realistic action scenes, and a little bit of ridiculousness thrown in for good measure. This movie Satisfies with a capital S. The violence is slightly more graphic than the Matrix, but not as intense as Sin City, 300, or Kill Bill. Yes, profanity is there, but there are not as many F-Bombs being dropped as I have seen reported. It's just that much of the profanity comes from the mouth of an 11 year old girl... (Which by the way should not even be allowed to SEE this movie for another 4-5 years!) You should definitely watch it before you allow any child of yours under 16 see it! COME ON! Be a parent already!
I want to add: I saw the Dark Knight movie and I recognized it was a groundbreaking piece of work, but when I left the theatre afterward I just felt depressed. Where was the fun? It was a good movie, but I did not enjoy it, and have not seen it since. Kick-Ass is both an awesome movie and a GREAT TIME! I left the theatre just thinking how soon could I see it again, and who could I share it with next time.
There is at least one reviewer that panned this film because it was not EXACTLY the same as the graphic novel. I used to be like that too, but now I realize that some things work better on the big screen than in a book. He lists the changes, and from what he states, I think I like the movie better than the book. I never read the graphic novel and I am glad I saw the movie first. From his description, I may have skipped the movie had I read the comic first. He complains and gripes that he hates when movies change comics. This is unwarranted. I have seen an interview with the writers that basically state that the screenplay was written more or less concurrently with the comic, just that Millar was primary in writing the comic while Vaughn was primary in writing the screenplay. They collaborated throughout on both, and a movie was always in mind. So, that comic book "purist" needs to get a life! THIS MOVIE ROCKS!
The director needs to do more films, and he, Chloe Moretz and Nicholas Cage deserve Oscar nods, but it won't happen. Hit Girl is written to steal the show, but it could not have been done so well without Chloe's dead on performance. There is not a bad performance in this film. Leave the kiddies at home.

18+ rating is due to Language & Violence. Be prepared for the F... word to be spoken near every 2 scenes. As for Violence, you will see many body parts being cut off with lots of blood.
Buy this DVD only if the above doesn't bother you and you love teenage action.
Bien sur le film de Matthew Vaughn reste assez fidèle au comics de John S Romita Jr& Mark Millar. Il peut être vu comme un simple spectacle: attention la violence est omniprésente, aussi, le public sera ado ou plus âgé; un big daddy jugera le film "visible" pour l'enfance, d'autres l'œuvre trop sanguinolente;
