There are no words to describe how deeply and profoundly touched I was by MINE, book 2 in the international bestselling Real series by Katy Evans. I am newly acquainted with the work of this brilliant author, but it doesn’t take a genius to figure out why she has such a devoted fanbase. Her writing is special. Unique. Utterly mesmerizing. Where to begin? Well, for starters, the connection between fierce, formidable underground fighter Remy “Remington" Tate and his lovely sports physical therapist Brooke Dumas is so soul-deep, their love story so epic, it took my breath away. Remington is truly unlike any hero I've met before. Big, brawny and brazenly sexy. Sweet soulful, and fiercely protective. He radiates pure animal magnetism and he lives to protect and possesses his mate. And from the moment his brilliant blue eyes locked with Brooke Dumas's amber ones during that first underground match in REAL (book 1), his soul instantly recognized hers and he proudly claimed her as his. The devotion he feels for her is carnal and purely instinctual, yet so selfless and gruffly tender it makes your heart ache! He will sacrifice everything--and anything--for her and truly loves her "with every petal of every rose” that he ever gives her. She is the center of his world, his reason for drawing breath. For being!
And his muse--his primal mate--loves him right back, just a ferociously. Brooke is hands down among my top three book heroines! I defy anyone to name a heroine who is more fiercely devoted to her man, who worships and adores a hero so completely and unconditionally. She is a mighty lioness who will staunchly defend her big beautiful lion at all costs. But she will need to draw on every ounce of love and strength she possesses to fight for her man. For beneath Remy’s electric blues, boyish dimples and roguish smile lurks a dark, tortured soul that could break a lesser woman’s spirit, but Brooke is undaunted by his manic episodes or his volatile mood swings. She loves him when he's black and when he's blue. When he is “King of the World” and when he has fallen so far down the deep, dismal abyss that hope seems all but lost. The bond between them is so strong, so impenetrable, that nothing--not mental illness nor formidable foes nor the cruel hands of fate--can tear them asunder, A true bonafide queen who protects her king, his fiercest ally who will stick by his side through darkness and the light, Remy’s "little firecracker" proves time and again that she does have the mettle to love the heck out of him. Speaking of family, I love the makeshift family that is formed between Brooke, Remy and their entourage (Remy's brothers in arms Riley and Pete, Coach, cook/dietitian Diane, and by extension, Brooke's best friend Melanie (heroine of ROGUE--Real book 3) and troubled little sister Nora. Katy Evans use of music to convey unspoken emotions between the characters is also quite touching…and I look forward to listening in depth to the entire Playlist! Another attribute that sets this book apart from others for me is Ms. Evans’ narrative voice. It is not only intensely emotional and incredibly eloquent but richly vibrant. I found her use of descriptive prose, body language and imagery to be particularly dazzling, like a kaleidoscope of colors and sights and sounds and images that evoke all the senses. She crafts her prose so masterfully, sweeping the reader up into the lives of the characters in such a visceral way, that it feels as if we are literally experiencing it all for ourselves. Enabling us to revel in each ravishing kiss. Each breathless sigh. Every snuggly bear hug. Each triumph and sorrow.
The chemistry between Remy and Brooke is magnetic and smoldering hot. A true mingling of hearts, bodies and souls, their intimate bedroom encounters are so palpable it is symbolic of a true mating ritual. You feel the sheer force of their love every time Remy engulfs Brooke in his arms, cuddles her on his lap and growls “Mine.” Every time she massages his sore, gloriously refined muscles after a training session or match, crooning softly to soothe and center him. There is no way to describe their love scenes other than primal. I mean, who wouldn't want a hero to make hot passionate love to you, and then in the tender afterglow, lick, pet and groom you like his precious lioness!
The plot moves along at a steady pace and I was enthralled throughout. The scenes are crafted with exquisite care and precision, and I thoroughly enjoyed all the dramatic/romantic arcs, each suspenseful twist and turn, and found myself literally on the edge of my seat and cheering “Riiiiptiiiiide” just like an actual spectator!
In closing, I could go on and on ad nauseam, reveling in every awe inspiring moment in this book. Cite dozens of swoonworthy passages that gave me goosebumps, brought tears to my eyes, or gave me such gushy feels it felt as if my heart would burst out of my chest! But in the end I will leave it at this: Mine is an unforgettable second installment in the Real series and I am proud to call myself one of the extraordinarily talented Katy Evans' newest fans! '
