Shame (The Ruin Series, Book 3) Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 1,406 ratings

#1 New York Times Bestselling author Rachel Van Dyken, brings you the third and final book in the internationally best selling Ruin series. This is a stand alone novel.

Everything done in darkness, will eventually be brought into the light.

I ran, but all it did was keep me one step ahead of my past. I tried to start over; new name, new identity. But you can't change your soul.

A fresh start at college was just what I needed. For a while, it worked. I was the party girl, the one that seemed confident, but it was a lie.

When guys kissed me--I felt only pain.

When they touched me--Nothing but fear.

Deep inside, every girl wants to be the beauty in the story, to find someone that will see you as their world.

But the truth? I was the beast. And as much as I wanted redemption, I wasn't fool enough to think I'd ever get it.

Until he walked into my life.

I wasn't prepared to fall for someone. My scars were too deep, the wounds too raw. But he offered me peace, he offered me security. I should have known it was just another lie--I should have known that falling in love with my professor was a bad idea.

But I was powerless to stop myself from falling.

And he was powerless to catch me.

Because the darkness finally caught up to me, and as fate would have it, a cruel twist almost bled me dry. But I'm stronger than I knew. I'm stronger than you think.

You think you know my story, but you don't....after all everyone has Shame in their lives-- and I'm no longer afraid to show you mine.

I've always loved Rachel's books, and this one met the standards. Most romance novels you read are either boring, repetitve (meaning they have the same story line,) or there's no connection between the characters. Rachel's are not like that. From the moment you begin the book, you are compelled to keep reading until you finish the book. Shame keeps you at your toes, with several twists and turns that make the book just that much better. I loved how it wasn't the typical student-teacher romance, and how you could never predict what would happen next. It's truly a unique book that everyone will enjoy to read.

Shame is about a young woman, Lisa, who was raped by her ex-boyfriend. When she meets Tristan, sparks begin. At first, they try not to fall in love, however it becomes impossible. As you read along with their love story, you'll find several shocking secrets about both of them that could tear the couple apart. But like all of Rachel's books, there is always a happy ending.

Rachel is very good with creating a connection with the reader and the character. I promise you will not only laugh at her sense of humor, but will feel sad and angry (and you might even cry,) when you read this book. She's so talented at creating all of these wild events that lead up to an unpredictable climax and resolution of the story. Shame is a remarkable book in every possible way, and I honestly can't find anything wrong with it. It has a great story line, a connection between both the reader and the characters, and is a page turner. I love how the book describes how they feel for each other and what they do in response to each others actions. In most books, the characters will just say "I love you," but neither of the characters' actions will show that they love each other. Its one of the most simple things that I love about not just Shame, but also all of her other books.

If you haven't read this book yet but have read the author's other books, you won't be disappointed. If you have not read any of her books yet, I suggest you read them all. You wont regret it!

Let me start by saying that I have not once read anything by Rachel Van Dyken that wasn't a five star or more read for me. I absolutely adore everything I've ever read by her and Shame is right there in that category - it might even be in a category of its own.
Lisa is a beautifully broken young woman who has a shameful past. Tristan is her hot college professor - sort of.
Lisa/Mel's past is just that - her past. She was manipulated, lied to, emotionally abused and hurt by one person who she swore she could trust. She overcomes the past as best she can - with the help of her friends, especially Gabe. She's strong and brave but broken. So broken. To keep her past in the past, she's taken on her "new identity" and changed her appearance but as one would guess, changing your hair isn't going to keep the past in the past forever.
Tristan is a gorgeous man (totally swoon worthy) who has questions about what his life really has been about and feels that Lisa is the only person who can lead him to those answers. He's desperate to find those answers and is willing to do almost anything to get them. When he first sees and gets to know Lisa it's with the full intention of using her to get answers. But as he continues to get to know her, he realizes that there's no way he can leave it at that. He's enchanted - as is she.
As Lisa's past becomes part of her present, the two battle for their hearts. Their hearts want to give in to one another without a second glance but both have secrets that threaten everything.
Rachel tells a story in Shame that covers so many problems in the world today. From online bullying to emotional abuse by a loved one. The way she tells Lisa's story is beyond beautiful. She doesn't make excuses. She doesn't make it look like it's all ok. She spells out the ugly and breaks down the beautiful. The beautiful that can come out of the ugly. And as a bonus, we get to see glimpses of Wes, Gabe, Kiersten and Saylor throughout the book. Wes's infallible wisdom and Gabe's humor and one liners make the book complete.
If I could give this more than five stars I would. Rachel, you brought me to so many tears, as you know. But in all honesty, every tear I wiped and Kleenex used was so worth getting to the end. And the ending - folks. Wow. I can't say much more other than it was a story worth reading, worth telling and I pray that it touches your heart the way it touches mine. Thanks, Rachel, for trusting me to give you an honest review.

I really like the Ruin series and I was intrigued about Lisa and her story. Even though all the books deal with some heavy subject, I think this book is the most heaviest.

We know from the previous books that Lisa has run away from her past and we found out why in Shame. And let me tell you, it is pretty tragic. I instantly felt bad for Lisa. She thought that she didn’t deserve to be happy like her friends and to be in love. She believed she had to suffer for what she went through and what she did in her past. But then she meets Tristan, her young college professor and the instant attraction is made. Their relationship is forbidden for more than one reason. But no matter how hard each of them tried, there was no denying their hearts. I really liked the progression of the relationship between Tristan and Lisa. Once everything comes out on the table, will the young couple be able to survive?

This was a good read. It wasn’t my favorite of the series but I was interested to see how it will progress. Rachel does a wonderful job keeping you hooked and if Lisa and Tristan will be alright at the end. I loved that we got to see Wes, Kiersten, Gabe, and Saylor, though we got to see Wes and Gabe more. I really liked the bonds of friendship that was shown within the group. This is the final book in the Ruin series and I suggest that they be read in order for a more enjoyable experience. If you liked the previous books, then you will like this one. Overall, a good read and an enjoyable series!

Lisa is such a complex character with an interesting combination of strength and insecurity. There are some deep issues involved in the plot, primarily emotional abuse, bullying, rape, and mental illness. So if any of those are triggers for you, consider yourself warned. I personally love Rachel Van Dyken's work, her books flow so beautifully with the perfect mix of characters, plot, and humour. The relationships and background characters are always incredible and I have yet to read a novel of hers that I didn't love. This one is no exception :)

I loved 'Ruin, Toxic and Fearless' but this book is a high out a doubt my favorite out of the whole series. This is Lisa's story.

I really felt horrible for Lisa. (Being a victim of bullying myself, I know what it's like) I although she was in a sense bullying other people, she was also a victim of emotional bullying herself. I really did feel for Lisa in what she had done, what she was going through and mote importantly what she had to overcome. Lisa falls for her professor, but he has a secret that he is hiding, and only Lisa can help him with it. He is their for one purpose, and one purpose only to avenge 'him' and see what this girl did to set him off.
Lisa has a stalker and she has to keep changing her P.O.Box address, when she is late for class, her new professor is not impressed and embarrass her to the whole class. Lisa has the support of Wes and Kristen, Gabe and Saylor.
Gabe being her best friend will do anything for Lisa and he will protect her, Lisa knows this and says nothing about the threats. But her dorm room gets trashed, more letters and the old website has videos of her in them.
Not to mention a little crush on a professor, whom she has kissed and they both liked it.

More secrets are revealed and you are in for one he'll of a shocker.
You have to read the other books to get to know the characters and know what's going on, but the shocker will definitely knock you on your butts.

This is the end of the series and it was a great ending. This to me is the best book in the series, you will not be disappointed if you read it. :-)

Rachel Van Dyken never fails to surprise me. She consistently delivers with her books and the fact that she always mixes the content and style up means you're always in for a treat. I really don't know what I was expecting from Shame but I've been left with a big fat book hangover.

I hate spoilers so I won't be leaving any and the synopsis breaks down the story for you but this was Lisa's book and boy she had me welling up on more than one occasion.

The mystery and suspense kicks in right from the get go in Shame and literally doesn't let go of you. I couldn't turn the pages quick enough and oh my goodness the ending.... you'll be blown away and I really didn't see that coming.

Shame was written in dual POV - my absolute favourite but at the start of each chapter we got snippets from Taylor through his journal. I thought these were great and they really set the scene on Lisa's back story without them being off putting or confusing.

Shame was emotional and gritty but heartwarming too (love and friendship really does shine through this series) - loved it and it gets stars from me.

wow! what an intense and captivating storyline! This book is fairly different to the first two but it most definitely stood out and ensured you got wrapped up in Lisa's journey. A great book that'd I'd definitely recommend. Maybe Rachel could give us a further update on the lives of Wes, Gave and Lisa.
