Product Description
This Tower Manufacturing 30339015 15-amp, 125V GFCI outlet adapter is a ground fault circuit interrupter that shuts off an electric circuit when the current flows along an unintended path, providing personal protection from ground faults and open neutral conditions. It has an automatic reset that restores functioning following a power interruption. This outlet adapter has a three-prong National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) 5-15P plug to connect to grounded outlets and converts any standard indoor electrical outlet into five grounded NEMA 5-15R outlets for heavy duty electrical tools and devices. It is compatible with 15-amp, U-ground, 2- or 3-wire outlets. The outlet box has an impact-resistant case for durability and safety, a red LED indicator to inform users when the power is on, and test and reset buttons for periodic testing of the device. This GFCI outlet adapter is suitable for use in the home, office, or workshop.

If the flow is irregular, GFCIs interrupt the current. They help to prevent electrical fires and to reduce the risk of shock, burns, or electrocution. Designed to shut off power within 1/30th of a second, they are used with power tools, on construction sites, and near water sources in homes (kitchens, bathrooms, and laundry rooms).
Tower Manufacturing makes electromechanical devices such as ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs), appliance switches, thermostats, and controls. The company, founded in 1957, is headquartered in Providence, RI.

My home is a bit older, and the outlets by the bathroom and kitchen sinks are not GCFI outlets. This product provides GFCI protection and three extra outlets for only a few dollars more than a regular GFCI outlet, and the installation is much, much easier. To install it all you have to do is plug it in. After I plugged the adapter in I used an outlet tester to verify that each plug is properly wired and grounded, and that the GFCI protection is working as designed.
The back of the product has three prongs at the top to plug into the top of the installed outlet. There is a plastic rod at the bottom that fits into the grounding plug of the lower receptacle to help provide stability. However, the product is not secured in any way to the outlet, so it's possible that when you try to unplug something from the adapter, you could end up removing the adapter from the receptacle. It's a minor inconvenience, but one worth noting.
Using this adapter is much cheaper and easier than hiring an electrician to replace your existing outlets with GFCI outlets. Even for capable do-it-yourselfers, this adapter may be preferable to replacing an existing outlet. The only minor drawback is that the adapter is a bit bulky and protrudes 1.5 inches from the wall.
The purpose of these items, (for those who may think this is just a regular socket with an interesting name) is to protect you from electric shock in case you get anything plugged to the socket wet (like dropping a drier in the water for instance). It cuts off immediately when an item touches water. It's really a good thing to have in all room of the house not just kitchen and bath. You never know when it may be necessary. To have the electrical changed, takes time and money and this is a simple solution, by just popping this into existing sockets and all is done.
Reason:
Upon first using it - it felt hot to touch
I did a little research on the internet and some comments were a gfci should never be warm.
I emailed the manufacturer - and must admit they were very prompt in their reply.
The responder said that it was normal to feel hot/warm, with the caveat that this was a portable device and to pull it when not in use.
I wanted to use it for a prolonged period of time and now am worried about letting it stay in an outlet for too long.
I had emptied the reserve barrel to clean it. All the electric appliances used in the barrel are plugged into this GFCI power strip. I was turning the appliances on/off using the test/reset switches on the GFCI.
During this cleaning there was a power failure to my home, Well unbeknownst to me when the power came back on it turned back on the GFCI strip.
I have a 400 watt heater setting on the bottom of the plastic barrel that burned through the barrel and base with wheels because there was no water in it. Luckily I was home and smelled the burning. Normally GFCI circuits do not reset themselves, rather you need to push the physical reset button back in to restore power.
I tested the GFCI wall receptacles in my kitchen and a button pops out and does not reset when the power to the receptacle is turned off and back on using the circuit breakers in the power panel.
I have decided to go to a big box store and find suitable replacements that the physical reset button pops out when the test button is pressed.
GFCI is a very important safety device when using electrical devices in water. As an example: I had a submersible heater leak and trip a GFCI strip already, so I'm glad I had them. I'd hate to stick my hand in a 'live' tank of water. One never gets 'used' to getting zapped and it's dangerous.
I don't need anymore surprises.
Damage cost $100.00
Damage cost if I weren't home ...I don't even want to think about it.
It's designed to plug into a double socket - the top of the GFCI is like a normal plug that fits in the top socket while the bottom has a plastic stabilizer that fits in the bottom socket (rotate 90 degrees if your outlet is horizontally oriented). Excellent value for the price!
