A Mended Man (The Men of Halfway House Book 4) Kindle Edition
Detective Aidan Calloway is rock-solid strong. He's a man of justice—loyal to his friends, family, and job—even if it requires bending a law…or two. He shields himself behind an abrasive, fearless facade, until a phone call one night chips his armor and throws his perfectly planned, hollow life into a tailspin.
Jessie Vega is the epitome of optimism. His carefully crafted attitude of hope and positivity protects him from a past filled with too much pain. When a ghost from a dark time resurfaces and nearly breaks him, he must tap into his inner strength or risk losing everything he's worked so hard to build.
But Jessie can't do it alone. He must fight to break through Aidan's ironclad defenses to reveal the heart of the man hiding beneath the tough surface and mend his damaged spirit. Only then can they truly heal and become strong enough to battle the demons that haunt them and threaten their chance to finally be together.

About the author

Jaime Reese is the alter ego of an artist who loves the creative process of writing, just not about herself. Fiction is far more interesting. She has a weakness for broken, misunderstood heroes and feels everyone deserves a chance at love and life. An avid fan of a happy ending, she believes those endings acquired with a little difficulty are more cherished.

A Mended Man is the story of Aidan and Jessie, and if you have read either A Hunted Man or A Restored Man, then you've already gotten to meet these wonderful characters - but you don't know their story, but you will and you will not regret it.
Aidan has always been a mystery, you wonder why he is the way he is. You wonder what he has seen to make him the man he is. Aidan's story is not easy, he has so many reasons as to why. Aidan is the ultimate protector, he will do what he can to protect those that mean something to him and he lets his protectiveness shine in this story. To see how he realizes strength doesn't always come from muscles one has, or that strength isn't always worn on the outside, always the reader to see that Aidan is so much stronger than he himself realizes.
Jessie is quiet, but fierce. His strength comes from within, he is just as determined to protect everyone around himself as Aidan is, only he doesn't realize that his strength is the one that Aidan is in desperate need of receiving. Jessie's life hasn't been easy either, but his outlook that he can't allow his past to rule his future, is what gives this man a strength beyond measure.
This is a long story, but once you reach the end you know why, it isn't an easy journey to be the person you once were, or the person you are meant to be. Jaime takes us on a journey with Aidan and Jessie, a journey I feel so very grateful to have taken. While I hoped their story would be easy, I knew it wouldn't be. The glimpses we had gotten into who they were from earlier books, showed that not everything is how it seems. You don't need to read the earlier books in the series before reading this one, but there are characters mentioned and seen in here that show up in earlier books, which just means if you have read any of the earlier books in the series you just may get to see a few old faces.
I wish I could put my emotions into words for this book, I had hoped that thinking about it and mulling it over would help....it didn't (lol). I just have to say thank you to Jaime, Aidan, and Jessie - thank you for letting me in and showing me just how much love you all have for one another. Ms. Reese, my hat is off for you, I can't imagine hearing this story first hand, to have to see what Aidan and Jessie showed you, and for you to put their thoughts, their fears, their past on paper for your readers. If I could give you a hug, I would - along with a hug for Jessie and Aidan. I will be re-reading this series, over and over (and I have told Ms. Jaime Reese this before, lol). Thank you for sharing your characters with us, and thank you to your characters for telling us your story.
There is so much more to Aidan than meets the eyes. He comes across as hard, closed off and has no room in his life for failure. Jaime does such an awesome job of writing his feelings, of letting us into his world, to the whys and events that brought him to the person he is. Aidan knows he's in love with Jessie but he also realizes that the way he is, he cannot do anything about it. Until...that moment when Jessie needs him most. Then Aidan throws caution to the wind and it will change their futures forever.
Jessie just plain loves Aidan and he is unwilling to walk away. Every time he tells Aidan how much he loves him, how he's not going anywhere, I cried. Literally, this is a massive Kleenex book. Jessie has patience and he needs a lot of it. In my opinion, he literally saves Aidan from the demons that haunt him. No one else could have ever gotten through to him. One of the things I love most about Jessie is no matter what he's been through, he finds a way to keep it positive. Yes, he has his moments but he isn't letting the past shape his life. I think that was one of the reasons he could empathize with Aidan.
The storyline will keep you in suspense as Aidan works toward finding the person out to hurt Jessie and bring his friends back home from Witness Protection. It is not a book you want to put down once you start and you will find yourself thinking about it until you can get back to finish it. Jaime touched on subjects that reminded me of a person within my family I hold dear to my heart. Anyone who doesn't understand that "love is love" should read this book. It is a game changer and will change their whole perspective!
I cannot say enough good things about this book. It left me hungering for more...I can't wait to read the next one and hopefully get a glimpse of how all my favorite men are doing! Congrats, Jaime! I would give you a hundred stars and more for this one.
As an aside, Aidan has one of the best scenes in any book I've ever read when calling someone on their ignorance. I have responded similarly to such comments in an even more blunt manner, so I gave him a mental high-five for that alone.

This is a part of a great series. If I re-read one, I need to re-read them all. They are interconnected and just build on each other. It is always nice to see how other characters are doing. Matt and Julian (book 1) Cameron and Hunter (book 2) Cole and Ty (book 3) and Drayton and Vann (book 4)

from buying this "book".

Aidan is a cop, former military, he has lots of baggage. He comes across as cold and uncaring but thats just how he protects himself.
Jessie is a genius at finding out backgrounds, loop holes, basically anything a person is hiding. He has a past that comes back to haunt him.
Together the two broken men mend each other, together they can get past the horrors they are both trying to forget.
WOW Jaime Reese knows how to write. This whole series has had me glued to my seat. These books are not fluffy insta love, they are gritty with good storylines and even better plots. I would advise reading them in order they were written as the storylines bleed over into each book....
I liked that the guys from the previous books play a part in this one, I like the slow burn between Jessie and Aidan, it fit the book perfectly.
Yes some parts were difficult to read, yes this book made me cry, I also had a few giggles. Cole is just awesome with his missing brain mouth filter, he lightens the book a little.
Overall a great read from beginning to end. Well written with great characters that make you want more....
I'm very curious to know who's book is next. If I was to take a guess, it will be the inmate that was mentioned by Jessie towards the end of the book....
