18-300mm F3.5-6.3 DC MACRO OS HSM | C
Switch less, shoot more
The Sigma 18-300mm 3.5-6.3 DC HSM OS Macro is another impressive addition to the Sigma Global Vision Contemporary line. With a 16.6x zoom ratio covering focal lengths from wide to telephoto, this lens also offers a 1:3 macro ratio. The Sigma 18-300mm Contemporary was designed for APS-C cameras where it equates to a 27-450mm lens and incorporates state-of-the-art Sigma technology. An enhanced optical stabilizer (OS) compensates for camera shake, while an optimized hyper sonic motor (HSM) ensures quiet and fast autofocus. Four FLD (performance equal to fluorite) paired with 1 SLD glass elements capture incredible sharp and contrasted images, all the way through the focal length. Utilizing top quality glass, the Sigma 18-300mm Contemporary controls aberration, even at the telephoto end to produce high quality images. Working with the USB dock, this lens allows for firmware updates when available and adjustment of focus parameters.
USB Dock Compatibility
Sigma has developed special software (SIGMA Optimization Pro) that can update the lens firmware and adjust parameters such as focus.

I bought the dock to do a firmware update which greatly improved performance and smoothed some rough edges including the OS. That said, we suggest you encourage your Sigma dealer to do this for you as a term of sale. This lens does not have customization setting features so the only other thing you can do with the dock is tinker with focus range settings at different zoom points. We have not had the lens long enough to mess with the factory settings. It takes great pictures and gives me the versatility I'm looking for. We'll see in the long run. It's heavier than the average lens and feels extremely well built. Some have complained the zoom is stiff but I find this comforting as a sign of tight tolerances.
Two things that annoyed me: The lens cap is not secure if you have a UV filter attached and is constantly falling off as I walk about; and the lens hood is not very secure and it also easily falls off. Added some small dabs of super glue to the hood in strategic friction points (and let it dry thoroughly) and this seems to have helped secure it. Do NOT put glue on the lens. The hood is easily replaced. I'll be looking for a different lens cap because this one will probably be lost soon enough.
I wasn't expecting much anyway, but the extreme close-ups I tried were not very sharp. But I might try again.
An added bonus for Canon users, the zoom ring rotates in the same direction as does Canon zooms.
I will probably retire the two Canon lenses, saving my 72-year-old back quite a bit of stress.
I have only two complaints, neither of which is worth deducting a star.
1) The zoom ring is a bit stiff, but will probably loosen with use.
2) The lens does not allow full-time manual focus.
Much of my decision making was based on test results that I found on "the-digital-picture/reviews" website.
Edited a week later - I have taken several hundred photos and am very satisfied with the results.
Edited a month later - I took it on a cruise and took many photos on and off the ship. The lens performed well, and its wide range mostly eliminated the need to switch lenses. For most shots center sharpness was good with perhaps a loss of sharpness in the corners.
Edited another month later - I took it to Hawaii, where it produced good results again. Its extended range allowed me to carry only the camera and lens for many outings, rather than a camera bag with two lenses.

Cons: bit heavy, difficult to hand hold for 300 mm shot.
