I have been using a drafting set for years, and it has always included pens into which you have to drop the ink. Finally, I decided to see if I remembered how to use this sort of pen. What a payoff. Even at the start, there were no splatters, and I learned that you can adjust the width of the line on these pens. Clear, crisp lines and circles, and I did them by hand.
Higgins was the best choice. Some of the other inks offered have no dropper, and it's a very good idea to have the dropper in the cap for the bottle. Much neater. The ink flows with just the right viscosity, and does so evenly.
More so than ever, we develop unevenly. We use calculators instead of thinking about math. Printers do a fabulous job, and you can be creative in the selection of fonts. They don't give you the sense of creation that simpler methods offer.
What I am not perfectly happy with is that this ink is too thin and watery for tight, controlled lines. I would not recommend it, except to fill in large areas of black, or where messy line work is acceptable (sketches or loose drawings), never high detail, thin lines or fine hatching.
I was excited to try this ink but it did not meet expectations. It is very wet and while it is very black, and very permanent, even while using a crow quill nib it's difficult to get a finer line than even using an extra fine fountain pen nib.
Leaving the bottle open for a week didn't help much, I was hoping that it would thicken the ink enough to use with steel nibs but it just didn't do it.
Aside from that I really like the bottle shape, it helps discourage accidental spills and it's small enough to pack and take around, it also has an eye dropper in the cap. I'm going to keep the bottle after the ink is gone and use it with another brand of India ink.
I will include some examples of the work I have done with the ink so far. I would 100% recommend this product to longtime artists and beginning artists.
