This thing cooks for that purpose. It is well balanced, the grips are well positioned, and it just feels really good in my hands. And!! there's no gas and oil to mix and spill and smell and breathe while running it, just chain oil to spill and wipe up. It runs at high RPM and feels like it is slicing rather than chewing and growling through the wood. It is light enough to reach with out forward and overhead (though I remind that one should always be careful about one's lower back and watch out for where the wood will fall when reaching with a saw).
If I had whole medium-diameter felled trees to trim and cut into rounds I believe I could do that with this saw too, though my needs and experience with this saw are limited to trimming, so that is only speculation.
The one drawback, logistically, is that this does run on electricity. If you won't be using a generator close to where you are cutting, and your lot is large, and you will therefor run extension cords for a distance, I'd suggest being careful to use an adequate gauge of wire in your extension cord to avoid voltage drop.
Some technical stuff: Voltage drops inversely as amperage load increases, but voltage drop is also related to line resistance (and therefor is also a function of the wire's diameter or "gauge" and the distance over which the juice has to flow). Wire diameter and amperage capacity increases as the gauge gets smaller- (10-gauge wire has a greater diameter and can handle more amps than 12-gauge, which in turn can handle more than 14-gauge, 14 more than 16, etc.). Wire that is too small or used over too long a run, or both, will cause excessive voltage drop, as an inverse function of the load the motor is demanding. If a chain bogs down in a "bind" situation (which will certainly sometimes happen, no matter how careful you are), that can start drawing a load that is greater than the saw draws when the chain is flying around the bar. The saw does have built in overload protection on the electric supply to avoid overheating the motor's wiring, but you don't really even want to go there, it is like lugging your car's engine.
To avoid overloads, I never like to run electric motors near or below their lowest voltage rating. So to avoid low voltages I like to use a wire rated for higher amps, especially over longer distances. I already had 150 ft of contractor-grade extension cord (the first 50 ft using 10-gauge and the last 100 ft using 12-gauge) to run an electric lawn mower, so I was ready with the electricity. Whatever you can do to reduce adding line resistance over the length of the extension cord does matter. Actually, I would love to use 10 gauge the whole way but 150 feet of that is way too heavy to lug around the yard.
Anyway, you should figure a good extension cord into your cost estimate and/or purchase order if you need to get that.
I do have one complaint. That kickback prevention cover over the tip of the bar does get in the way of making some close-quarter cuts, when there is not a lot of room to position the saw to get the cut started. I remember reading one reviewer who purchased a replacement bar without the guard. It is not that annoying to me...yet. I may look at how I could remove it, myself.
Smooth, fast and relatively quiet,,,as I said, a great saw!

The saw is VERY fast, which I was impressed with. But it is either on or off. So most of the time for me it was too fast. I also didn't care for the oil pump using your thumb while trying to cut. The motor and switch seem to be excellent Makita quality, but other than that, it didn't meet any of my expectations. I did compare it to other electric saws at Home Depot and it seems to be better built. The Makita UC3530A should be a much better saw, but after trying this out, I am sending it back and I'll stick with Stihl gas chainsaws in the future.
Now that the yard is cleared, the only question is, when will I use this fun tool again? It'll be years before I'll have such heavy growth to deal with a second time. The occasional fallen tree limb, I suppose, will have to do -- and helping out neighbors with growth problems similar to mine. Not everyone can afford a saw as fine as the Makita, and the cheaper alternatives are no bargain, considering how easily they burn out or break down. The Makita is built to last, I'm sure of that much.
Very pleased with this purchase. This is a commercial grade tool that novices like me can use with confidence, and safely.
