I decided on the model 2 since I'm 35 although I've never given birth. My first time using it was pretty easy and I'm going to list some really helpful tips as I go.
Before you use it, wash it with hot soapy water. The hot water kind of makes the material a bit softer and comfortable to insert. I kind of squat and fold the cup like a taco by making a U shape by pushing the sides toghether, then gently push it in towards your tailbone rather than straight up. It should be far enough up that the base isn't sticking out or visible. You shouldn't be able to feel it. The first few times I put It in I could feel it and I was worried I got the wrong size, but it just wasn't in right (it took a few tries until I couldn't feel it). After it's inserted I kind on wiggle the base around so that it pops open and creates a seal. You can also push it up a bit if it's too low by inserting a finger and pushing it a bit at the top. So for my first period using it I thought it seemed like a lot of work and stressful to put in and take out (looking back now It's the complete opposite). I got lazy and used tampons half the time.
When you go to take it out, bear down (I like to do this in the shower or on the toilet) and push with your muscles down there until the base is sticking out, then pinch the base hard to break the seal. Pinch and wiggle it while gently pulling it out. Pour the contents into the toilet and wash with hot soapy water and repeat.
While researching, I had come across horror stories about it getting stuck, but I've never had that issue. Just squat and push down if that ever happens. I also heard people say they couldn't move their bowels with it in, or that it was painful, but I don't have that issue. I can go to the bathroom just fine with it in.
I'm so glad I stuck with it and didn't give up because after using it for a few periods it got easier every time and is second nature now. It takes seconds to put in and take out and now there's no mess, waste or leaks to worry about. I have an extremely heavy flow and have never had a leak whereas before I was bleeding through a super size tampon in less than an hour. The diva cup is comfortable to sleep in and work out it. Sometimes it slips down a bit when I'm working out, but I just go in the bathroom and push it back up or even kind of pull it back in by doing kegel exercises (weird but it works). The diva cup is a harder cup which is good because that is what causes it to pop open inside of you and prevents leaks, but if you prefer a softer cup this may be too hard for you. If you are unsure or have never used one, its a good one to start with. My tips are to run hot water over it (Don't dry it off) before insertion to help it slip in easier (you can use lube too) and so the cold material won't be uncomfortable. Squat down in the shower to remove it and wash it each time you shower. Bear down in a squatting or sitting position to remove. To insert, stand up, arc your back like you are getting ready to do a squat and put one foot up on a ledge, insert and aim it up and back towards your tailbone rather than straight up. And finally, DON'T GIVE UP! It gets so much easier each and every time you do it. By period #3 you will be a pro. It can be intimidating at first, but it's so satisfying once you master it. It's so worth it.
By chance, I was sitting in my doctor's office reading a natural health magazine and saw an add for Diva Cup. When I got home I instantly researched it and thought it sounded like a potential life changer - or a potential disappointment. I read the reviews and decided I should give it a go. I went to the local store that was supposed to sell it and was disappointed that they were out of stock, but they did have the disposable "Instead- Soft Cup". So I bought that because I was just about to start my period and I didn't want to have to deal with my double protective measures anymore! I ordered the "Diva Cup" here and had it shipped 2-day express mail.
So, I've tried both out. Here's what I have to say about each.
Both are amazing in terms of the volume they can hold before needing to "dump" or replace.
Where I once had to change a super plus absorbency at least once an hour (with a heavy flow pad back-up), I can now go 4-5 hours. Both products also handle endometrial tissue and blood clots without any problem. On my normal flow days, I can leave them in for 12 hours without fear of leaking! When both are positioned properly, you will not know either is there. If you can feel either of them, you haven't inserted it correctly.
Here's how they differ.
INSERTION:
The disposable "Instead- Soft Cup" is only one size. It consists of a sturdy bendable plastic ring with a plastic baggie-esque cup. Think of it like half of a female condom, only the internal ring is sturdier. The Instead Cup is exponentially easier to learn and put into proper place. It goes in farther into your vagina and you need to make sure you pop it behind your pubic bone (the bump with a ridge-like texture just north of your vaginal opening). The baggie part sits underneath your cervical opening and your flow collects into it. While this cup won't leak if inserted properly and are having a normal flow, it is common to see a some blood if you urinate or have a bowel movement. Since you're engaging your muscles, you'll displace a little flow in the process. This won't affect the efficacy of the cup after you use the toilet. No need to readjust.
The Diva cup is a completely bendable but sturdy cup. It's a similar material to a diaphragm, I instantly snipped off half of the stem after having read the comments here. I'm glad I did. Anyhow, the Diva Cup is extremely uncomfortable when you are learning how to insert it. The instructions tell you that you shouldn't insert it farther into your vagina than 1/4" from the base of the stem. This is true BUT - the labia extend deeper inside and some of your internal space isn't the vagina at all, but space between your labia. How I realized I got it right was when 2 things happened, the first was that I was actually able to rotate the cup with no problem and the second was I heard a suction-noise. The Diva cup goes in deeper than you would think, but you definitely shouldn't be trying to shove it as far as you can. The cup sits lower in your vagina than the Instead cup. It isn't directly blocking the cervix. Rather it forms a collection blockade. Unlike the Instead cup, you won't see any blood upon using the toilet. If you do, you might need to remove, dump, clean and re-insert.
REMOVAL:
This is a biggie for me and one that makes me favor the Diva cup. The Instead Soft Cup requires you insert your finger and find the loop then you pull out. Because the cup is so flexible and bag like, it's a disgusting mess. Unless there is a garbage can next to the toilet, it can be awkward having to remove, dispose and put in a new one. Your fingers will get bloody! If you are squeamish, you shouldn't get this brand.
The diva cup is easier and much cleaner! The sturdier material holds its cup shape and blood won't spill out of it accidentally. It's quick to wipe out with toilet paper if you aren't next to a sink. If you push down on your muscles you can easily grab the bottom of the cup. It's easier to grab the base than the stem. (In fact, if the stem irritates your vagina, it's not an issue if you cut it off entirely).
INTERCOURSE & Other sexual activities:
You can have sex with the Instead Soft Cup and neither party will be affected by it. Because of where it is positioned, your partner won't be hindered and you won't be hurt or "rubbed the wrong way". It's a great solution to when you want to get intimate but don't want a bloody mess on the sheets (or the couch, or the rug).
Lastly, the Instead Soft Cup is also being used to aid in fertility. Rather than boosting your tush up in the air on pillows after sex, you can place the instead soft cup inside to prevent gravity from having its way with that precious male-mix!
You can't have intercourse with the Diva Cup and it won't prevent semen from slipping away from your cervical opening.
GOING GREEN:
Clearly, one is disposable and one is reusable. However, you use far less of the Soft Cup than you would tampon's and pads.
FINAL VERDICT:
Personally, I'm going to keep both on hand. I'll use the Diva Cup for my menstrual issues and the Instead Soft Cup for when my husband and I need some grown-up time during that time of the month.
Top reviews from other countries
Personally, I have found it very easy to use, inserting and removing it is perfectly fine but I have no problems learning and knowing my body and it can’t go anywhere so as long as you’re not stressing yourself out and you can hook a finger around the rim to break the seal your okay to go. I’d suggest though that if you have a high cervix to try different brands as some have valves or thinner silicone so that releasing the seal is easier. I only suggest that because unless you have longer fingers you may have to reach a little further and it can be uncomfortable for some.
Benefits of using a cup with a lighter or medium flow is that if you can manage 8-12 hours without emptying it, just emptying it in the shower at bedtime and in the morning means no additional messyness. You can freshen up at the same time and because you’re reinserting it straight away towel drying after your shower means you don’t have to either swap to dark towels or have wash them every day for smears.
I have used cups for years previously. No dryness or tugging or mess and my periods reduce by between 2 to 3 days due to the negative pressure. I have nearly no pain whatsoever and my first few days achy pressure is pretty much non existent when I use the cup. Again, I think my body just likes the negative pressure and responds positively. £30 for one cup that has previously lasted me 6 years before I stopped using it is pretty good going so I’ve bought the same one again now. Next is to stop using disposable liners on these days and swap to period pants. I will be scouring the internet for some good bargains.
Bottom line is I feel so much better with my cup in now, I can’t feel it AT ALL and I feel so much more in control of my monthly’s.
I used it for the first time a couple of days ago and thought I got it stuck. I panicked and just wanted the thing to come out of me. I was worried I’d have to go to emerge and try to explain what happened. I was SO embarrassed. After I forced myself to calm down enough to Google suggestions, I learned I was not the only one. I practiced deep breathing while sitting on the toilet and allowing my body to relax and help get it out. After that traumatic experience I told myself I’d try again next month.
I tried again the next morning! I was really determined as someone that has a myriad of health issues I really needed this cup to work and kept trying. It did turn out I was having difficulty getting the cup out last night because it was in properly and just shifted into it’s natural position.
What I’ve learned:
• Get comfortable and give yourself time to adjust. Practice relaxation technics - Kegels and Pelvic Floor exercises help a lot. If you are too tense it won’t work and will hurt.
• Use a water base lube on the rim, it helps SOOOO much! Obvs be careful because it becomes slippery. But since using lube it’s really comfortable.
• Try various different folds. Everyone is different.
• Try various different positions. Whether in standing or sitting positions. Whatever is comfortable for you.
• Always remember aim for your tailbone
• When taking it out if you can’t reach the rim aim to get a firm grasp on the base and squeeze
• Be careful with long nails. Mine aren’t very long and I’ve managed to punch myself a few times.
• Use a pantyliner and/or pad when you’re first starting out. If you’re really nervous at least give it four to six hrs. Before taking it out.
I started using this on Saturday night and now it’s Monday morning and I am really great at getting the cup in but still struggle taking it out. I’ve found a particular position that works for me to get it in and keep forgetting to do that position to get it out. At the end of the day you know your body best and this cup may not work for you. There are various different shapes and sizes so it may be trial and error. Or you may want to stick to reusable pads, but you never know until you try.
As someone with endometriosis, ovarian cysts and fibroids this is a game changer for me, I am really excited!!
For those curious about size
I am 26, never given birth and using size 2. I think smaller would have been wrong for my body!
