A great way to learn the globe as you build it. View larger.
Easy to assemble with no glue.
Display stand allows you to spin your globe.
Explore the World in Puzzle Form
The Ravensburger Earth puzzleball is built with 540 curved plastic pieces, engineered to securely snap together without the use of glue to form a smooth sphere. Each plastic piece features a detailed section of our Earth and provides a hands-on way to explore the globe from the comfort of your living room. Numbers and arrows are printed on the back of each piece to provide direction in the building process, and a handy reference guide is also included to see the completed map while you work.
Display Your Globe with Two Stands
This puzzle set includes two different stands to display your Earth puzzleball. A curved plastic base holds your globe while the puzzle is in progress and lets you position the globe any way you like. A separate metal display stand is included to hold the completed puzzle. This display stand allows you to spin your globe on its axis, making it easy to show off the completed globe and study its detailed surface.
Learn While You Build
Our testers found the puzzle pieces to be detailed and easy to connect. While some pieces took more effort to snap together than others, they all joined into a smooth and impressive globe. The plastic stand provides a convenient place to store the globe while searching for pieces. Doing the puzzle guided only by the map is a bit challenging, but great for learning countries' locations. The addition of numbers and arrows on the inside of the pieces is a big help for getting through tough sections.

This puzzle has plastic pieces, and it's highly unusual, because each piece is numbered and has an arrow pointing to where the next number in sequence should go. You put it together as a spiral, spiraling up the lines of latitude from Antarctica to the North Pole. You're supplied with a handy stand that has a curved bottom, to rest the puzzle in while you're assembling it. My tip for you is: After each dozen pieces or so, go back and really fix the previous pieces. Hold the globe up to the light so you can see if any piece is out of alignment. Because at a certain point, it becomes nearly impossible to go back and correct the alignment. And as for the very last piece, up at the North Pole -- take your time with that one, because once it's in, there's no adjusting.
I did all the above, and the puzzle turned out perfectly. One final note: the metal stand is very attractive and works perfectly. However, it skids a bit on a surface. I put a little dab of "shoe goo" on the spots where it contacts the surface and that stopped it from skidding. Any kind of silicone adhesive would also work fine. Or you could just hold it when you spin it so it doesn't skid.
A word about the stability of the puzzle: Some reviewers said it required gluing. It most definitely does not, or at least mine did not. Perhaps thanks to my frequent inspection to ensure the surface was flat and all pieces were flush, it's extremely stable and sturdy and we didn't use any kind of adhesive.
Overall: Fun, educational and decorative. You can't lose!
The product description says that once finished, the ball is smooth. I suppose it's as smooth as it can be when it's made of 540 little pieces. It's not like it's a ball that you'd play with. It's good for display though, and fun to look over the countries of the world. We have several types of globes around the house, from a golf ball to a beach ball and this one is one of the prettiest. The display stand is "meh" but the globe is very nice.
The ball is around 12 inches assembled. It sits nicely on it's display stand. The colors are bold and it's well labeled. The pieces are a sturdy plastic. I've had it for over two years. I'm sure it will last many more.
We put together all of the countries without using the numbers on the back, but then we put it together the rest of the way with the numbers, i don't know how anyone - without spending days and days - could put together the ocean parts without using the numbers, but frankly we didn't even care to try, we were grateful we didn't have to. At first it was a bit overwhelming with the 500+ pieces but we quickly separated out the ocean parts, and off we went. We spent about 7 or 8 hours straight on Christmas day with people coming and going and stopping to help out a bit, and we finished.
After it was finished, you could not tell it was a puzzle unless you are up close and personal. It has a nice safe place on our mantel where is is often times gotten down to look things up. My daughter is very proud that we were able to put it together without using the numbers, it was very important to her. This was a really fun project for any family to do together and one of these days we will take it apart and start all over again. Definitely recommend!!!
Also I want to comment on the posters who had problems and had to use glue or tape, we did NOT find this was a problem for us. We did not need to use glue or tape at all, there were no loose pieces, it was actually perfect and very sturdy. It was a bit challenging to get that last few pieces in at the North Pole but with the hole there for the stand we were able to use little fingers to get them in and fit. It did take a bit of patience though. Also everything lined up perfectly for us, everything was printed perfectly, and there were no duplicate pieces, our puzzle was perfect.
