Product Description

RE50/B Omnidirectional Dynamic Microphone. The Electro-Voice RE50/B is a specially shock-isolated, omnidirectional, dynamic microphone that was created for the most exacting professional applications. An advancement in shock-mounting techniques, it was designed particularly for handheld broadcast and sound- reinforcement use. All handling noise, clothing noise, and even cord shock have been isolated from the microphone element so that mechanically induced noise is greatly reduced. By use of a high-mass zinc internal acoustic chamber, shock mounted within the machined-aluminum outercasing, the RE50/B offers a degree of isolation unprecedented in omnidirectional dynamic microphones. The internal transducer uses a mechanical nesting concept all its own. Each part is nested inside another so that the transducer (head assembly) is nearly a solid structure. It is highly resistant to damage from shock. The diaphragm is unaffected by temperature extremes and atmospheric conditions. A carefully designed integral windscreen and blast filter provides excellent protection from wind noise, excessive sibilance and annoying "P- popping." The RE50/B has a grille that bounces back to retain its shape. A four-stage pop filter prevents dust and magnetic particles from reaching the diaphragm. The RE50/B's attractive, nonreflecting, semi-gloss black finish is ideal for on-camera use.

Hardest working microphone in television.
5 Stars
Hardest working microphone in television.
This is probably one of the most well known often used microphones used in the broadcasting industry.Extremely well made, solid construction, sealed up pretty well against dust and the elements. The build in shock mount and windscreen make this one of the best microphones to use in a high noise environment. I have used them for everything from doing a "man on the street" interview to recording a track for a network story.

This microphone is meant for speech, it has a mid-forward, smooth response.

The omni pattern means there is nearly no proximity effect so you don't get the muddy loading of the low mid frequencies if you are not disciplined about positioning. This is excellent for husky, bass or baritone voices. It has a very natural room sound due to the pattern as well.

The pop filter on this mic is one of the very best there is. Of over a dozen mics I own, this is the only one where I can use it bare without any wind screen over it. The damping for handling noise is also incredibly done.

Even with the omni pattern, it still rejects background noise quite well.

The runner up for me for speech is the Shure SM-57 but it requires a wind screen for sure and the speaker needs to stay in a disciplined position to maintain a steady sound quality. For ENG/interview use, the RE50b is far and away the right option as the 57 isn't meant for that level of rough and tumble handling.

I never owned or used one of these until now and I'm surprised I'd never run across one earlier.

For people doing podcasting or recording of speech who are new and don't have command of EQ and advanced processing equipment, this mic will give you a giant advantage as its default sound quality is far cleaner than most other mics. It has a high enough output that most USB interfaces or budget mic pre-amps will handle it well.

I know these microphones. I was a professional TV reporter for many years and pro cameramen always used them. Now doing YouTube videos and video production, I needed a good uni-directional microphone. The EV RE50 is a famous workhorse. I've stood talking with jet aircraft nearby and gotten excellent voice recording.

I plugged it into my small video cam, using an XLR to mini plug. (You can buy those cables on Amazon for about 10 dollars. XLR (into mic) to male mini (into camera.) The mic sounds great and I know they last forever.

This seller got the microphone to me two days early. I love it.

This mic is perfect for ENG field reporting. It's the gold standard as far as in the field work goes. The mic is plenty long to add a mic flag and a lectrosoncis hm plug and still be comfortable to hold. Plenty of output and a no need for Phantom power makes this a perfect power saver. Have used it in many many loud and ambient situations and it is always surprising me. Mind you, It's no replacement for a proper shotgun microphone for non-eng work… Very very low handling noise and great built in wind filter.

I am a freelance news videographer. This is simply the standard microphone in electronic-news gathering. Every station I work with in my market has one so I picked one up to see what all the fuss was about. The microphone takes up the abuse of run and gun shooting and interviews. Oh, and the audio is great. I am amazed on how affordable this piece of equipment is. You must get one for any interview situation!

Amazing on handling noise and I can see why it has been the standard in ENG for years -- however, if you don't have serious, and clean, pre-amps pumping to your recorder in the field, you're going to notice very limited gain. I returned it and sprung the extra $20 for the ND/B...it was worth it.

This mic is designed for ENG field work, but the sound quality is good enough for studio work when you need an omnidirectional mic. It should stand up to some heavy use without trouble. This isn't a condenser mic -- no battery, no phantom power.

I find that the output level of this mic is a bit low, but I am able to get enough gain out of my mic preamps to take care of that. But before buying this, you should also consider the very similar RE50N/D-B, which has a higher output level.

If you want to get a great handheld mic to use in field recordings that doesn't need phantom power, look no further. This has been a staple of the recording industry for years. I love having this when I want to cut down on mic handling noise, or want to use less batteries to drive phantom power or lav is just not an option. A great low cost tool for the toolbox of field audio.
