Does the newest entry in the near 20 year old Mortal Kombat series deserve your attention? In a word, yes.
Mortal Kombat offers a deep gameplay experience that very few fighting games can claim. NetherRealm Studios has raised the bar in this entry, and wiped the series' spotty history clean again.
Mortal Kombat brings the series back to what made it popular and infamous back in the early '90s: hyperviolence and extreme gore, which will be a welcome change to those that still have a bitter taste in their mouths from the enjoyable yet sterilized Mortal Kombat Vs. DC Universe. MK cuts away the fat the franchise has built up in its last few 3D entries, such as 3D-plane movement, weapons fighting and multiple stances. While the last few Kombat games may have seemed gimmicky and notable only for their violence, Mortal Kombat steps into the realm of the great, legitimate fighters, such as Street Fighter 4. This Kombat is a lean, well-oiled machine.
The story mode in Mortal Kombat stood out as unique in my eyes, at least compared to other fighting games. This is the first fighting game I have played with a very lengthy story mode. It intertwines multiple characters and relives/reboots the history of Mortal Kombat 1, 2 , and 3. I found it to be very enjoyable, and I found myself actually interested in MK's strange yet cool roster once again. Demon warrior Scorpion's backstory is fleshed out, and he is humanized as you relive the anguish he experienced when Sub-Zero and his clan destroyed Scorpion's village, and killed his wife and son. You will find out why Jax has metal arms, why Cyrax and Sektor are cyborgs, what the hell Mileena is, and more. The story mode has more than 15 chapters, and all of its cut scenes are skillfully produced.
Mortal Kombat not only re-imagines the original trilogy of Mortal Kombat 1, 2, and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, but also shares most of those games' roster and arenas. The great story mode is complimented by a healthy amount of additional content in the form of multiple single-player and multiplayer game modes. In addition to the substantial story mode, there is Challenge Tower, which is a 300 level, very cool mix of fights and mini-games that are actually entertaining. Challenge Tower mode is partly a tutorial, offering up, for instance, matches where you can't use your special moves, or more comically, fights where you have no arms.
There is also the standard Ladder arcade mode, where all characters also have the requisite intro and outro movies. There is also Tag Ladder mode, where MK shows off its brilliant tag team fighting, which is even more fast and furious than the singles mode. There is a Fatality Training mode, where you can skip right to mutilating bodies to your heart's content. Returning from the series' past is the Krypt, an awesome stockpile of unlockable goodies, where you can spend Koins earned in all the other game modes.
Mortal Kombat's return to the 2D plane is a very welcome one in my eyes. The game feels stripped down in a good way, and you never feel like you lost a round because of wonky controls. The game has a new meter that fills up in three stages as the rounds go on. Fill up the first stage, and players can perform an enhanced special move. Fill up the second stage and you can use a "Breaker" to break an opponent's combo. At stage 3, you can unleash a devastating X-Ray move, which can be avoided, but if it connects, expect a near 50% health drain (alongside a brutal animation). Executing the staple moves like uppercuts, leg sweeps, and fireballs is easy, and the crunching sound of bone and sinew clashing is satisfying.Likewise, special moves and Fatalities are simpler to perform than ever, with Fatalities even appearing on the games start menu move list. If you lose a round online in this game, it's because you need to practice more, not because the controls needed more QA time.
That's not to say this game is without flaws. The controls may be fine tuned and the story mode may be interesting, however the not all of the skeletons of Mortal Kombat's past have been swept away. The boss characters' AI is still insanely cheap and very frustrating, and can still only be beaten by stooping to its level, and using your character's cheapest moves over and over again. Granted, this particular problem plagues other fighters as well, such as Tekken and Street Fighter, however this problem has been practically married to this series since its inception, and I would love to see it fixed in the next entry.
Mortal Kombat is a beautifully rendered, back-to-basics brawler that is packed to the brim with awesome content. Yes, it has its flaws, but with its refined fighting system, stunning graphics and hours upon hours of fun gameplay, I find it very hard to not recommend this game to fighting fans, and those that left the series behind after MK3.

From the very first trailer to the final game, you know it delivers its promise. This MK is not only the most violent entry of the franchise, it's the most complete experience in fighting games to date. One most recent brawlers can't still match for what it has to offer.
Just to begin with: graphics are great and blood spurts everywhere. It's MK at its finest in its untamed form, the way it should be and we love it to. For the PS3, 3D support is added and it clearly shows that, if not necessary, it can be enjoyedat its best with a good 3D TV and a good pair of goggles. It's a piece of work technically and artistically. The stages are fantastically done and well realized with some old MK favorites like the Pit and the Pool even better than we remember. My personal favorite has to be the Living Forest. A stages with a guilty pleasured realized in the form of a gruesome (and neat) Stage Fatality at the end of the match.
That attention to detail applies to the characters during a fight. Damage given to them is visible (if you want to), reflected in their bodies and even clothes. The animations are great for every move, even in combos. May not be the most realistic game in terms of animations, but what's done here is made with the most care I've seen. Obviously, MK is no completed with the Fatalities, and definitely are the stars of the shows. A welcome aditions to watch are also the X-Ray Attacks, which are the most appropriate answer for SF Super Combos. Both moves share the same traits in common: They are gruesome, violent, shocking and, last but not least, hilariously fun to watch!
Not to mention it also sound good, with some of the soundtrack a tribute to the music of the original games. Also satisfying are the SFX for the bones crunching on the most devastating moves right into the action.
The game modes in single player mode are surprisingly rewarding compared to other MK games, as well as other brawlers. the ladder is there as you may expect for the classic feel of MK. Challenge Tower, on the other hand, is a welcome addition. 300 challenges you may want to stick from the very first one. Each challenge gets harder with some of them including classic landmarks like Test Your Might and some crazy stuff like defeating three Goros o Shao Kahns (For the latter, "This is Insane!" should be called "This is Madness!").
Along with Test Your Might, there are also other minigames included like Test Your Strike, Sight and Luck. All of them can be played separately, but it's better when played in the Challenge Tower.
The Story Mode is a pleasant surprise. This makes the first game to apply a story that you care, but also a mode that really works well. The story per sé is the retelling of the three games. Beginning shortly after the end of Armageddon, Raiden is about to be executed by Shao Kahn, the two being the only ones left and each one sided to Earthrealm and the Outworld. Before his demise, he uses his amulet to send his past self visions of the event to come during the Mortal Kombat, hosted bysahng Tsung. Even with some minor variations, including the appearance of MK4's Quan Chi, this retelling doesn't feel like a filler found in most games, including other which included this mode recently like the DOA series. it's here the MK mythos takes an important role. And it's something you care and appreciate even if you're new to the franchise. A reboot in the best sense.
All the modes comes with Koins you can use in the Krypt to unlock the extras MK has to offer, including new clothing for all the characters. When i said rewarding, i mean plenty. The game has content... A lot of content, even for single player.
Controls are very responsive and the Kombat is way satisfying. Most of the landmarks like upper, flying kicks that send you to the ground and roundhouses are there. The combos can be executed seamlessly and more accessibly, but while the are some on the list to begin with, others more can be achieved with some training. That accessibility applies to special moves, throws and even finishers, but if something fails, it's because of you. Yes, special moves can be done more easily and so are the Fatalities, which additionally have a bit of more time to perform and even a mode to practice those finishers.
And these MK wouldn't be complete without its wide array of Kharacters. The old favorites like Sonya, Johnny Cage, Liu Kang, kitana, Jade, Smoke, Raiden and (let's not forget about) Scorpion and Sub-Zero are here in this game, with their landmark moves looking better than evern and in their obnoxious and violent glory. Special note goes for Kratos for the PS3, taking his Blades of Chaos with him and even one stage from God of War III. While some of his moves giving somewhat unfair advantages, I think his addition is more than appropriate for this game. Thank God he's not included in Story Mode!
Online modes for this MK are not as plenty as other games and even for this MK, but they serve their purposed for those who want to go online to challenge everyone. the most funny of them is the King of the Hill, where enjoy someone else's fight while on queue to cheer them up or boo, and even scoring it, taking the old feeling of the arcades much closer. Also online matches can be played one-onone of with tag teams... Yes, this MK support tag teams mode where you can fight up to four players at the time at home or taking your home partner online with other two either way. However, i fell there's some lag in the response for online mode when I first tried... I didn't try again since my internets is somewhat slow.
My final thoughs of this MK are clear: It's a sure bet and you better buy it! if you ask me which version to buy, you can make no wrong with the Komplete Edition with all the DLCs, all of them worth it! Also you can buy the Collector's Edition if you're a real fan.
Either edition, a sure bet. You won't regret it!
