About Stanley PowerLock Tape Systems and BladeArmor Coating
With a classic design and updated features that add durability and performance, the PowerLock line of tape measures is the perfect balance between classic Stanley design and the best innovations in tool manufacture. BladeArmor coating is a patented industrial thermoplastic coating, the very same material that has been used to strengthen and protect aircraft parts, such as the rotor blades on the Sikorsky Black Hawk Helicopter. Simply put, it helps aircraft survive war zones, and it also helps tape blades survive construction zones. Applying BladeArmor coating to tape blades reduces both tape breakage and tape returns, enabling it to conquer the toughest testing ground of all -- the job site!
From the Manufacturer
The Stanley Works, originally a bolt and door hardware manufacturing company located in New Britain, Connecticut; was founded in 1843 by Frederick T. Stanley. A few years later, in 1857, Fredericks cousin, Henry Stanley, founded The Stanley Rule and Level Company. In 1920, The Rule and Level Company merged with The Stanley Works and would go on to become its famous Hand Tools Division. Over the years, The Stanley Works has produced some of the most innovative and useful tools ever made. Among these tools are the Bailey Plane, the Surform shaper, the PowerLock tape rule and most recently the FatMax line of products. Today, more than ever, Stanley continues to be an industry leader in tool innovation. In 2001, Stanley introduced more than 100 new products, bringing to 400 the number of new products introduced in the past four years. As a direct result of Stanleys commitment to excellence, Stanley was awarded the Prestigious Golden Hammer Award, presented for New Product Innovation in both 2000 and 2001.

###EDIT### After using the new Stanley tapes I bought I have to recant some of the good things I had to say about the tapes. I bought 3 of them, 2 of them have split 1/4 inch strips along the sides and then turn into razor blades! I had one break and cut my thumb. Not happy with the thinner blade material. I found one of the older tapes that look just like these and the tape was much thicker. Just like everything else you get less for the same money. I will be looking for a replacement to the "former great Stanley tapes". Shame because Stanley meant quality in my book.
I thought they were more expensive than this too which was a nice surprise. Not much has changed though. (not that it needed to) It is just a little bit smaller case, about the same weight and the first 3 inches (which is likely to take a lot of abuse) has a little bit of protection in a clear plastic coating. Maybe this is what the call "Blade Armor"? Who knows, I do love my Stanley tapes though. Belt clip as usual is really tough. I don't see myself having any issues with it unless my kid steps on this one again. (which is unlikely)
I also prefer the standard increments on the tape as opposed to some of the goofy readings you see on some others intended I guess for people who don't really know how to read a tape (?).
They are also a US made tape measure. I'd rather not support China's work force whenever possible.
I've used many other kinds and brands in the past, but these are my "must have" for the past 10 years or so. Thanks to Amazon I can get them again as local stores don't seem to carry this model anymore.
EDIT:
After using this tape a bit. I find it is not of the same quality as my previous Stanley. The tape seems flimsy. I went back to my old Stanley but it finally broke and now I’m using this Stanley tape ,but am not happy with it. Stanley needs to step up it’s game and use better steel for the tapes.
The brake still slides effortlessly and locks completely.
Numbers and dashes are easy to read.
The belt clip on the back is very solid. I also have a Klein 25' tape that I loved initially but the clip broke off after only a month or so!
It will extend free air to about 8' or so without "breaking" ...more rigid than other 25' tapes I've owned.
I'm sure I'll have this on my toolbelt for many more years to come.
