Artisana is a small team of super dedicated people making organic and raw nut butters in Oakland, California. We started Artisana in the San Francisco Bay Area in 2002 and introduced our products at farmer's markets and festivals around California. We work with local farmers for our almonds and walnuts and with farmers around the globe for many of our other ingredients. We're committed to sustainable and fairly-traded ingredients that are always certified organic. Today, you can find Artisana Organics in natural foods stores across the country as well as other familiar regional supermarket chains. Before ordering this I honestly wasn’t sure what “coconut butter” was. I know I love all forms of coconut, though, so I gambled on this one.

WOW is this delicious!! It is truly like a whole raw coconut was puréed and put in a jar… because it was! Rich, silky, very intense coconut flavor, and naturally sweet (no added sugar, 1g natural sugars per tbsp). You can dig out chunks of this and eat it like candy. It’s that good.

The texture is not what I thought. It’s not a soft, spreadable butter. Even at room temperature of 70F, it’s a hard solid. You have to chisel out pieces. If you wanted to use this as a spread, you’d have to immerse the whole jar in warm water for a while first. Just FYI there.

Since going Primal, I've been incorporating a lot of good fats into my diet. After reading about Artisana coconut butter in paleo/primal blogs a number of times, I decided to purchase some. I think the taste is pretty good, but, at first, I found the mouth-feel to be a bit off-putting. My first little spoonful was pretty much coconut oil. After heating the jar a bit and stirring it up good, I tried again. At first, it was like a mouthful of powdery peanut butter. The coconut butter stuck to my teeth, tongue, and the roof of my mouth and the texture felt like I'd taken a spoonful of baby powder. (I believe that this is because the coconut is dried and then ground to make this paste.) After a few seconds, the mixture felt like it was melting on my tongue, like good chocolate does, getting soft and creamy, but it also felt like it was expanding, growing in my mouth. After a few tastes, I started to adjust to the texture and really enjoyed the strangely sweet but not sweet taste of the coconut butter. I also really like the ingredient list: organic raw coconut. No added sugar - that's hard to beat. One thing that sort of surprised me though, besides the powdery texture, was that this didn't taste or smell like coconut. I didn't expect it to taste like a fresh coconut, but I expected some sort of fundamental coconut taste. The Nutiva coconut oil I bought ( Nutiva - Coconut Oil Organic Extra Virgin, 29 oz solid ) has more flavor.

The product description says that refrigeration is not recommended. I don't know why they recommend against it, but I keep mine in the fridge because it makes me feel more comfortable about keeping a single jar and snacking out of it for a couple of months. To get a spoonful, I remove the top and microwave the jar for 15 to 20 seconds - just enough to melt the coconut oil that may have risen to the top and soften the meat. I did have this out on the counter for a few days and it was pretty solid even sitting out so I'd expect that you have to heat it regardless of where you store it. Thus far, I just get a little spoonful of it now and then, but I imagine it would be good paired with some fruit if you needed a little something else to eat it on.

Overall, I don't know that I'll ever consume massive quantities of this stuff like some of the primal/paleo bloggers out there, but it's an easy way to add those healthy fats to my diet.

While this product does taste absolutely delicious, when it arrived it was separated in the jar. The oil was soft and came out easily but the rest was dry and so hard I couldn’t get it out. I proceeded to use a butter knife to try to break off little pieces which worked for a bit before on one try it broke through and shattered the bottom of the jar. At which point I threw the rest of it away to avoid eating glass bits. I will try to find this in local health food stores but I won’t order it online again. That way I can see if it’s separated or not.

Ordered 2 6x16oz jars only got 2 14oz jars....Tried contacting seller before writing this but its been over a week now...good product but very overpriced if they arent going to give me the other 10 jars i paid for and would be nice if they were 16 oz as advertised not 14oz
