We have owned this blanket for a full five years now. The quality is great, it's easy to clean, and it folds easily for transport. Our blanket has handled outdoor picnics, half day parade watching, cool wet evening grass while watching fireworks, muddy days on the pizza farm, tuna spills, bubble solution spills, vomit, urine, dirt, mud, multiple kinds of beverages, sunscreen, and more!
This has been a well used blanket for many years and it has held up beautifully. The stitching is still strong, there are no rips or tears, and the handle shows no signs of weakening. I LOVE that this is machine washable because it has certainly needed it. We hang it to dry and it dries pretty quickly.
This is not a "blanket" in the sense that it doesn't offer any warmth and would be awkward to wrap around you. What it's great at is keeping you dry while sitting (as long as you don't try setting it over a puddle or something, obviously) and being easy to clean and wipe off. If you set it on cold ground and then sit down, you will feel the coolness through the blanket.
How is this better than using just a regular blanket? The water resistance of it makes this a hundred times better than a regular blanket! And not just for the water resistance factor, but also because that kind of material means you won't end up with a blanket full of grass clippings, burrs, crumbs, or a soaking wet blanket you then have to transport home. If things spill on this I can just pick it up, shake it off, fold it up, and wash it at home without having to worry about getting my car, or myself, full of whatever is stuck on the blanket. Sometimes I will take a baby wipe or paper towel for things like mud, but otherwise most things will shake right off. This also means that you don't have to wash it as often as you would have to with a regular blanket since most things can just shake right off. This is also better because of the weight. It is heavier than a regular blanket, so a windy day isn't going to cause too many problems if no one is sitting on the blanket. Our kids fight over who gets to carry the blanket though, so you know it's not too heavy. We had purchased a Thirty-One outdoor blanket as well, but that one was MUCH smaller and so light that it was constantly flying up, even when people were sitting on it (you basically have to sit on the edge).
The 5' x 5' size has worked well for two adults and a child, or one adult and two children. With two adults and two children it can feel a little cramped for doing a picnic, but still works well for sitting to watch a parade or softball game. This blanket does come in a larger size as well. I would recommend using this outdoor blanket over a Thirty-One outdoor blanket, or a regular blanket, any day. It would be worth it for using even just a few times a year!
