I kept looking at this set over the last year thinking I should buy it but always backing out because of the price. Finally, I said if I don't get this and they don't choose to refresh this model, I may not be able to get it again. Alas, I bought it.
I was so excited to get the set this week and start to work on it. My first surprise when opening the box was that the bags were numbered. Two perspectives on this: cool for some people less so for others (me). I actually LOVE sorting the LEGOs. So what did I do? Opened about half the bags and dumped them and then sorted! So much fun!
While these instructions are pretty clear except sometimes it is sometimes hard to discern the difference in the pictures what shade of gray block to use. I only like loosely following the instructions as I like to test myself and will often build parts in tandem and frequently not build in order. While still always fun, a couple times I had to backtrack because there are a handful of pieces in this set that aren't symmetric on both sides.
Overall, I think the design of this Star Destroyer is quite good. I did not really experience any instability and the carrying handle (while seemingly fragile) is a great idea. Towards the end of building the set, I greatly disagreed with some of the block placements and changed them to what I thought looked better (essentially certain visual flares were being hidden by layers and layers of blocks.) Also there are a handful of yellowish/beige blocks in the set and don't really match anything. I thought it was quite confusing why they decided to use them. The complexity is just about medium and the nearly 1400 pieces was manageable. There are some aspects towards the end of the build that are many small pieces.
I spent a couple hours every night over 3 days to complete it. Maybe a total of 8 hours including my sorting time. I am more than glad I bought this because it made me realize how much fun these sets still are. I am for sure buying more!
Can anyone reading this recommend a larger set or more complex set to build next (doesn't need to be Star Wars)?
The instructions are broken into sub books as is normal on modern LEGO sets, and the pieces are also broken into bags in the box to help find the right piece at the right time during the build phase. This is super helpful on a set this large.
The set goes together quickly for an experienced set builder, but would be difficult for a LEGO novice, or even an experienced builder probably younger then say 10 years old.
My only gripe is that as an adult LEGO collector I would have loved to have a few more of the storm troopers. The set comes with two, I would have loved four. The other minifgs are great including an officer, crew and of course Darth Vader (with new head)
The area below the command bridge and above the main body of the set does only stay on via gravity and isn't held to the main body by any studs, it simply lifts off and the rest of the top of the set opens up for inside play. One thing to note is there is a technic handle build into the set to help with carrying the set around and adding his was genius. (very similar to the handle on the Republic Gunship LEGO set 75021)
The iconic nature of this SW vehicle make having this LEGO set a must.
My son had been wanting this for a long time, saved his money and I helped him order it on Amazon.
When it came it got about 1/3 built and then sat on the table for a few weeks.. I think my little guy was overwhelmed with so many pieces.
I asked him if he wanted help with it and he said "Can you finish it for me dad?".
SWEET!
Thank you Lego for making a kit with so many pieces that the dads get to play too!
The "model" is a great representation of a Star Destroyer.
It opens up so there's a little "play area" inside to recreate some scenes from the movie, or create your own new adventures.
Watching my son combine this with other kits has been a lot of fun.. especially Indiana Jones vs Star Wars... I think he almost caused a tear in the space-time continuum having Lego Indiana Jones in the same area as Lego Han Solo.
