Product Description

Rod Steiger (IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT) earned a Best Actor Oscar nomination for his stunning performance in this powerful story of hope and empathy from celebrated director Sidney Lumet (DOG DAYS AFTERNOON). Steiger plays Sol Nazerman, a survivor of a WWII Nazi death camp where his wife, parents and children were murdered. His soul robbed of hope, he takes refuge in misery and a bitter condemnation of humanity while managing a Harlem pawnshop subjected to an endless parade of prostitutes, pimps and thieves. Jamie Sanchez (THE WILD BUNCH) plays Ortiz, Sol's underprivileged and idealistic assistant who dreams of a better life. Two of the film's best features are the gorgeous black-and-white cinematography by the great Boris Kaufman (ON THE WATERFRONT) with a memorable trumpet score by the legendary Quincy Jones (THE GETAWAY). The wonderful cast also includes Geraldine Fitzgerald (WUTHERING HEIGHTS), Brock Peters (TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD) and Raymond St. Jacques (COTTON COMES TO HARLEM).

Stellar performance by Rod Steiger. Deeply moving story of a damaged, lonely refugee from the Holocaust who can't accept the companionship that is offered him. It is not just about Holocaust survivors. but about all who have been displaced and deeply damaged by catastrophe.

Might be Rod Steiger's most morose and bleakiest role. As an Auschwitz survivor whose family were raped and tortured there, he feels a veritable menagerie of despair because of the guilt he feels for his inability to extricate them from the camp and for the guilt he feels because he somehow managed to make it out. His job as the titled pawnbroker does nothing but fuel more fire to his dire situation in life as he is cast amongst the severest cases of poverty in his store's Harlem neighborhood. Added to that, he has to front his store for a despicable vice lord (Brock Peters) so that he can at least make a modicum of income.

Sounds and is grim but is, to me, the quintessential groundbreaker of the ultra-realistic urban life dramas that were to unfold in the latter 60's and early 70's. Rod plays his part to perfection as a lifeless, embittered old man who has seen too much in one lifetime. The aforementioned Brock Peters along with Ray St. Jacques, Jaime Sanchez (his apprentice) and others flavor this dramatic pot even more so with their poignant portrayals of their respective characters, each of whom has fallen victim to the scourges of his ghetto habitat.

I shall not offer up where and how the redemptive transformation occurs in our principal, except to say watch the entire movie and see for yourself how it all unfolds. Truly, a time-tested masterpiece!

This is a depressing movie to watch. The timeframe is current with the main character having flashbacks to the loss of his family during the Holocaust. Because he and his loved ones were shown no compassion, he shows no compassion.

I expected every movie I purchase to have subtitles. This one didn't. Did I buy a knock off??

The acting along with the script and film is a movie that you will return to at least in your mind. It is provocative. It has a visual of life that is depressing and sad. I felt many emotions and none were joy. It speaks of a dead man walking. A film for the ardent film enthusiasts. Not a matinee film. Not a film for some.

Extremely painful and mournful movie. Rod Steigers acting is so, so intense, and his character portrayed is so stone-cold virtually dead of human emotion due to what he lived through in the horrors of the camps during the holocaust. There are some brief scenes where he has a flashback in a subway car, of being in a cattle car on the way to Auschwitz and the camera focuses on a packed tight as sardines car of wretched people all displaying big stars of David on their shirts, and the sound effects just tear your heart out. As a musician, I can tell you that Quincy Jones along with Billy Byers used their musical genius to create some music that magnifies the pain of this movie in a big way. Some interludes of no music at all, then others of quiet strings during a pensive warm human interaction between the Pawnbroker and his protégé, then some blaring and searing painful crescendos during the painful scenes. Try to watch this with someone, or at least have someone to call to have a good conversation with when it is over. It will definitely help you appreciate the good we have in life.

Steiger comes through as the fractured, fragmented survivor of the death camps only to relive the horrors of his past through daily events. Unable to love, unable to empathize, unable to allow himself forgiveness for surviving what had destroyed everything and everyone he has ever loved. Steiger is masterful. In one scene alone with with the camera in extreme closeup, long suppressed emotions boil under his face as if his face is skin stretched of writhing serpents. Tears, sweat, and blood glisten on the surface of his face as he wrestles with pain and madness.
Today we might look at these characters as cliche's of a bygone era but I remember the early 60's well with the dirty streets, hard bitten faces, struggling to eke out a living. This was filmed in NYC and i can smell the city in this film. Nothing is cleansed for the camera. It was this gritty.
Millenials should see this film.

5.0 out of 5 stars Peut-on survivre à une tentative de génocide ?
Reviewed in France on January 14, 2022

5.0 out of 5 stars A masterful piece of acting and directing.

None other than Rod Steiger himself believed this to be not only his favourite film but also one of his finest pieces of acting and perhaps that was why HE was nominated for the Best Actor Nomination at the 1965 Oscar Awards even though he didn't win.In The Pawnbroker he plays the part of Sol Nazerman a holocaust survivor who now owns a pawnbrokers shop in a ghetto in Harlem. Sol despises everyone, all his customers and he treats them with contempt. He has flashbacks to life in the Concentration Camps where his family, his wife and children perished.Sol has given-up on humanity after what he has seen humanity is capable of doing to each other? His shop is used as a money-launderers for local Crime Boss Rodriguez(Brock Peters) for a cut of what is exchanged;MONEY, Sol tells his assistant Ortiz(Jaime Sanchez)is the only thing in life that matters to him NOW!However when Ortiz lays his life on the line for Sol, he at once has the chance to see that all is NOT lost, that there IS still goodness in people but sadly at an expensive price? Brilliantly directed by Sidney Lumet.
