Product Description
Penelope Spheeris' The Decline Of Western Civilization was perceived as shocking and outrageous at the time of it's original release in 1981 and it's two follow-up films were no less extraordinary and revealing. Today, museums and educational institutions around the world present them as a historically significant works of art. Featuring some of the most influential and innovative musicians and groups of all time: Germs, Black Flag, X, Fear, Circle Jerks, Alice Cooper and Ozzy Osbourne, these riveting, unflinching and hard-core films adeptly captured the spirit of a major cultural phenomenon. Now for the first time, all three films are available in one deluxe box set. And while all three films have been restored in high definition, they are in keeping with the feel of the rebellious times in which they were shot. Here's an immersive tour of in-your-face filmmaking and music.
Review
Shout! Factory have done a pretty fantastic job bringing The Decline Of Western Civilization Collection to Blu-ray in truly deluxe style. The movies look and sound as good as you'd want them to and the set is jam-packed with extras that are both interesting and often times very entertaining as well.
The films themselves hold up well as cultural artifacts of their respective times. Anyone with an interest in punk, metal or just subcultures in general should seriously appreciate this boxed set and all that it contains. --DVDTalk.com, June 19, 2015

Shout Factory has done a pretty damn good job of putting together these 3 "Rockumentaries" by adding some very cool bonus material while at the same time keeping the original films grounded in their mucky, spit drizzled splendor.
The bonus features include (but are not limited to) Audio commentary by Dave Grohl. (This is a bit of a head scratcher for me.) Grohl is fine and all but really has no connection to any of these bands spanning all 3 films. Sure, he knows Lemmy and played in some hardcore bands before Nirvana and that other band he's in now. But Pat Smear would've been a better mouthpiece. For God's sake at least he was in the first film, in all his shy, teenaged homo-awkward greatness, without a clue of what an insanely awesome life he had ahead.
All three editions have been restored into a 2K HD scan, though it's hard to tell. More so in parts 1 and 3 due to the gritty 8mm look that adds to their charm in my opinion.
There is a totally rad bonus disc with cutting room footage and performances as well as two interviews with the director herself. One conducted by Tawn Mastrey of the long time L.A. staple station KNAC. And another interview by Mark Toscano Of The Academy Film Archive.
A 40-Page Booklet Featuring Rare Stills And Text By Domenic Priore.
And quite a bit more... So if you're on the fence about whether or not to invest in these snapshots of three bygone eras of music and culture spanning 2 decades in SoCal. My advice is to just smash it down and take the leap. .
Love all three films and having then together in a package with the bonus material is just that. BONUS!
I must mention the one bummer of the bunch. That is the "B Roll" stock (film) of all the interviews from The Metal Years was lost. As a result, the bonus and extended interviews on disc 2 and the interviews (from part 2) on the bonus disc are terrible quality. That was definitely a downer BUT that besides, this collection is a must have!
The maker breaks it down into 2 different genres being punk, metal.
The 1st and 3rd docs focus on all aspects of punk, you will definitely be schooled on the germs.
The 2nd doc is all about metal and will reveal why metal is still a major movement today.
There is also a 4th bonus disc that has many extended interviews not to be missed.
Very cool booklet with lots of info, photos, technical credits is also included with this set.
This is a must have in blu ray, get it before it slips out of print.
DTS Master audio in both 5.1 AND 2.0!!!

Frozen in time is the punk era of the late 70s early 80s. Decline 1 is a look at the sex, drugs and punk music that flooded the music scene. This was at the time when the world was being introduced to the angry aggressive punk phase. Brilliantly captured.
Decline 2 is appropriately subtitled THE METAL YEARS, which is a look at the the heavy metal scene that ruled the 1980s. I remember that time. Everywhere you turned there was a new metal band & a new album, flooding the market. Filmed during the zenith of metal music. The big hair, the pretty boys with loud guitars, the headbangers, the lords of thrash metal, it's all here. this one is the most polished of the 3, perhaps had the biggest budget.
Decline 3 is the most different of the 3 but certainly not weak. This is perhaps the most gripping. It follows a group of young people who live the LA scene, the streets, the drugs, the music. You get to know the kids and really come to feel for some of them. Then a slight shock at the end during the end credits when you learn one of them was later murdered by another one who was also interviewed.
No shortage of special features on the 3 disc, plus the boxset includes a 4 Blu-ray Disc just strictly special features. Shout factory went all out for this love affair with punks, metal-heads & their lives and music.
The film makers also have stated the are ready and preparing to finally do a Decline 4
