What is ISO ppm?

Print speed is critically important when buying a printer or all-in-one. But how do you compare print speeds when different manufacturers measure it in different ways? Now you can. Much like “MPG” ratings on new cars, there’s now an industry standard for measuring print speed, which allows for an “apples-to-apples” comparison between different printer models and brands. The International Organization for Standardization (widely known as ISO) developed this industry-approved and internationally accepted standard, specifically for inkjet printers and all-in-ones. It measures “out of the box” (default) print speeds using “real world” printing scenarios, so you can be sure you’re getting a product that performs at the speed you need.

So far so good
5 Stars
So far so good
I have only had the printer for a few days. However, I've used the print, copy, scan, and memory card functions. Not the fax.All functions work fine. Print quality is fine. I have scanned a photograph and have been able to print that scan without much degradation.I submitted a few photos to Amazon about the print-outs from the 3540. I was able to get a test page printed from Linux (ubuntu) using the WF500 driver. The test page printed very well indeed (the photo's not as clear as the printed page). All colors look fine and quite sharp. With the printing I've done so far, the ink's still almost full. Set-up was not a problem. I have set it up on WIN7 and WIN XP SP3 so far. Both installs went well. I have it connected via wireless. The only issue I've had so far is keying in the really strange password I have set up on the router for wireless access. Thankfully, that has only to be done once.I really like the nearly unmentioned memory card slot functionality. Put the card in the reader (I used an SD card) and you can see it not only on the LCD screen, but also on your computer (mounted as Z: drive on mine). I've edited photos on the PC directly from the chip in the printer. Nice. I've also created a folder on the chip and deleted it with no problem - the photos are still there. So it really treats this as an extra mounted drive.I set up Google Cloud Print and Epson Connect. I haven't used them except to print test pages. But they seemed to work fine.I have scanned in a check and deposited it to my bank. No problems.I bought this for use as a printer, mainly, and as a scanner for checks. But it's much more than that and I've had no problems so far (only had it 4 days now). If it continues to work as it has, I give it 5 stars. If it breaks, etc., I'll update this review.P.S. I have another printer for photos - a Canon Pixma Pro so I have not printed any photos out on the WF3540 except on plain paper. They came out as expected. Not really great, but not too bad for plain paper.Print quality for text and graphics is fine. The test page print-out in Windows is very "forceful." It printed the test page so quickly it spat it halfway across the table! The test page under Linux is much more complex and took much longer to print (probably because it's higher quality).Very happy, indeed, I can use this (printer only) under Linux. Nice.I have Amazon Prime so the printer arrived in two days...on a Saturday. I figure that postage alone is a good chunk of the Prime yearly fee to say nothing of the many, many videos (films and shows) I've watched so far. A good deal indeed.

Top reviews from the United States

Reviewed in the United States on November 14, 2012
Feb 2nd, 2014 - In the fall of 2012, my ole Canon printer stopped working, and I was pretty bummed to have to go researching printers online as so many of the manufacturers promise the moon but deliver only ink eating turkeys. So, I headed here to Amazon and started searching. Out of all the lower cost printers, one Brother monochrome laser jet and the Epson 845 Workforce stood out, when only Amazon Verified Purchase reviews were counted. I need the ability to print in color from time to time plus scanning so the 845 spiked my interest. Checking the Epson website, I discovered the WF 3540 which is the 845 rebuilt for 2012/2013. So with much trepidation, I ordered it from Amazon. Below is how I would rate it in several general aspects:

Appearance - With its rounded edges and black facade, it sure looks nice, was my first general impression. Would fit right in with any upscale office setting or custom made home. The touchscreen is also large, bright and easy to read (and dims when not in use). As printers go, this would be a 9 or 10 out of 10.

Instruction Manuals - When you open the WF 3540 box, you will see a Quick Guide booklet and an Immediate Start pamphlet. This will get you up copying, printing and basic scanning in less than 15 minutes. However, both mention that if you go online to Epson's site, you can download the full 333 page User's Manual. That manual in turn, is very detailed and answers most of the problems that I see many of the one star reviews for this printer encountered. Can't recommend it enough before trying to call for phone support. 10 out of 10 for the manuals.

General Functionality - For myself, I run Windows 7 64 bit from two computers and Debian/Mint/Ubuntu on the other three. I ditched the included CDs, downloaded the latest drivers from the official Epson website and then set it up in Windows 7 first where it printed fine, copied fine, faxed fine and scanned fine. (did not test the fax until much later but it worked perfectly) (As for Mac operating systems, I only tested with iOS 6 on our iPad (it worked just fine) and did not test with Snow Leopard or Mountain Lion, as I only use that code at work) To my surprise it even worked well with all three Linux variants despite Epson stating on their website that it may not work. I did have to use a bit of terminal in Debian to get past a scanning problem, but overall, count me happy. The print speed is very close to its ISO rating of 15 pages per minute for black and white and about 9.3 for color. The automatic document feeder worked fine for me as well as the rear paper loading slot for photo paper. This printer also has two paper trays and will hold about 500 sheets if you fill it up. Which is very nice since you don't need to fool with reloading that often. So, for functionality, 10 out of 10.

Wireless Functionality - Worked fine with my Windows 7 64 bit systems. To my even greater surprise it also worked with my Linux computers, even my laptop that runs Mint. Also got it to work fine from my Samsung Galaxy S III smartphone and my wife's iPad. All three mobile print options (Epson Connect, Google Cloud and Air Print) worked just fine for me. For me personally, I found the wireless setup to be extremely easy, a 10 out of 10, but for someone who is not a tech enthusiast, perhaps a 7 out of 10.
(I will say, the number one problem many have with the 3540 is getting wireless set up. Reading install directions and setting up drivers is paramount, especially if you want wireless printing to work. With Windows 7, you must head to control panel -> network and sharing center -> change advanced sharing settings, and then make sure that network discovery, file sharing and printer sharing are turned on, and that your home network (and ideally, homegroup) are set up correctly. If not, your wireless laptop is not going to see the Epson WF 3540 (whether it is stand alone or connected to your desktop by USB cable). There is also a correct install order to the print drivers and if you install the Epson Connect after the main lump driver package, it will over write the previous registry values in the kernel and you will have to redo the Wi-Fi setup wizard on the printer touchscreen. Likewise, Linux and Mac operating systems have their own preferred setups for wireless, and you have to be a bit careful or you wont see the WF 3540 in your network.)

Software - The software packages that I tried, including WebPrint, Epson Connect, Event Manager and Download Manager all worked as promised. (from Windows 7). Unfortunately, these software programs are not available for Linux users, but I knew this from reading the product details online. Got to say, aside from the few Linux lapses, I was fairly surprised by this point. The iPrint software did work fine from my Samsung Galaxy S III smartphone. Over the 2012 Thanksgiving holiday, I tested Google Cloud Print, and it works just fine. You can also sync the software to Google Drive (online cloud storage).
One positive and negative about the WF 3540 is the amount of software. The good news is that each program actually does a needed function and is coded correctly, and works in Windows 7 64 bit. The bad news is that the total software suite is very large (almost 750 MB installed) and you are left with about twelve entries under My Programs. You can choose which ones to install thankfully and several (like Epson WebPrint, Epson Connect, the Fax stuff and the online stuff) are not really essential if your main mission is just printing, copying and scanning. 9 out of 10 for me personally.

Ink Usage - This Epson 3540 has four ink tanks for standard pigment based ink (not dye based), and the ability to install extra high capacity tanks as well (these are the T127 versions in comparison to the smaller T126 tanks). I have a bit over one year of use on this 3540 and have about 70% left on my first black tank replacement, while all three color tanks are at about 15%. If you purchase official Epson ink in the regular (T126) cartridge size, it costs $61 here on Amazon to refill all four colors or $73 if using the larger T127 tanks. In comparison to other major manufacturers, those prices are slightly higher than average. However, if you check InkToneram here at Amazon, you can find replacement ink that would normally cost $273 for official Epson ink for $18 (and that passes ISO standards). I ordered some myself and tested it to find it works just fine. That is simply too massive a savings to pass up.
On May 20th of 2013, Epson released firmware file FWD395TL (version # 13.45 CJ15D4) which some printer gurus on the internet say is designed to prevent third party after market ink cartridges from working. I did update to this firmware and retried my InkToneram cartridges to find they are still compatible, but thought I would mention it here for consideration. In early August, I learned that Epson appears to be working behind the scenes to automatically update printer firmware (this is the default driver configuration when connected to the internet) and shut out 3rd party ink retailers (which are much cheaper than official Epson ink). If this is actually true, then my high marks for this printer will be adjusted downward. You can prevent this by reinstalling the main drivers and choosing 'Do not automatically update the firmware'. You can also deny your printer internet access from network properties.
Also, with my prior Canon printers, thanks to their firmware coding, all tanks were used even for greyscale printing, resulting in frequent expensive ink purchases and loud tirades. With this Epson 3540, when you check the tab under printer properties for greyscale printing, the Epson WF 3540 does indeed print only from the black tank (or, if it is using the color tanks, it is doing so at an incredibly slow rate). Thank you Epson for not shafting me on the greyscale printing. About 4 out of 10 if you buy the official Epson ink and 10 out of 10 if you buy quality unofficial ink.

Print Quality - I also find the print and photo reproduction quality to be just fine, but I am not a photography specialist. The few photos I have printed out on photo paper seem to me to be crisp, bright and with excellent definition. If you are really in to high quality photo printing you may want a seven ink tank printer. This is the category I feel the least able to give good judgement on. For the average Joe, 9 out of 10. For a photography specialist, perhaps 6 or 7 out of 10.

Durability - It has been fifteen months so far and no erratic behavior, so that bodes well. Most cheaper printers work well for the first few months and then start failing, so I will try to update this review about once a month. I can say that this printer, despite the WorkForce name is not intended for office type use. If your environment requires printing more than 300 to 500 pages a month (roughly speaking), I would begin looking at either heavier duty or commercial printers. Since this printer has worked correctly in all of its functions for one year, I have upgraded this review to five stars. However, if it turns out to be true that Epson is trying to update firmware versions behind the scenes to block out third party ink suppliers, I will downgrade this review accordingly.

Overall Impression - For the $159 I paid, this is so far (fingers crossed) turning out to be the most positive experience I have had with a home printer, .... ever. The Epson 3540 is like the Swiss Army Knife of printers. Since my printer has made it more than a full year without any loss of function and because it still supports my third party Inktoneram cartridges, I feel it deserves the fifth star. I hope it continues to work this well for many more years.

Overview:
- Epson WorkForce WF-3540 is a two-tray, duplex printing, DUPLEXT COPYING, DUPLEX SCANNING, Wi-Fi & Ethernet, Multifunction Printer (MFP). While similar to its less expensive sibling, the WF-3520, but there are more differences than just the additional 250 sheet tray. The led touch screen on the 3540 is much nicer, and you can print Wi-Fi direct, without an access point on the network. The foot print is the same for these two printers, and it is obvious that the bottom tray is an add-on, as with many printers. The bottom tray is different in that it can only do letter-size paper. The WF-3540 offers Ethernet and Wi-Fi for network connections. It also offers the same basic Multifunction Printer (MFP) features, starting with printing and faxing from, as well as scanning to a computer, including over a network, as well as functioning as a standalone copier and fax machine. As with the WF-3520 also, the WF-3540 supports printing through the cloud, assuming the printer is connected to your network, and it supports Apple AirPrint for printing over Wi-Fi. (No cloud for me, unless I own it.) Unlike the WF-3520, the WF-3540 adds support for Wi-Fi Direct, which lets you connect to the printer even if you don't have a Wi-Fi access point on your network. It can also print from and scan to a USB memory key, and I guess print directly from a PictBridge camera, although I haven't tried it.The printer is pretty good size at 12.1 by 17.7 by 22.2 inches (HWD), but that's with everything opened up, so it isn't that big for what it is.

Interface Clarification::
- The most confusing thing is the documentation talks about send buttons, copy buttons, enter buttons, fax buttons, etc. There are no such things. What they are referring to are the BW (Black & White) button and Color buttons.
- While everything else on the touch screen works as you would expect, the scroll bars do not. You must need to use the arrows off to the side. The scroll bars you see there are just to show you there is more down or up from where you are.

Setup:
It goes about like any MFP. It doesn't require a degree in Computer Mysteries, but you do need to have a basic understand of how things work so that you know what they mean when they are asking how you want to set up the phone lines, fax text, fax telephone number, and how you want it to interact with the phone line. The printer has a pretty lame web page that shows you some of how it is set up. Watch carefully what you agree to if you don't want cloud services. You can also use the printer's web page to set up Epson Connect services or stop them, Google Cloud Print or stop it, Apple's AirPrint, check for firmware updates, and view but not set basic things on the printer such as ink levels, and communications settings, except you can configure a proxy and DNS setting. E.G. less than you would expect. One would expect to have access to all of the printer settings, as with many printers, so you wouldn't have to use programs and layered menus on the printers touch screen and you can use a keyboard to enter information. That is not what you will find here.

Printing:
For printing, it has two 250-sheet drawers, it's easy to keep two kinds of paper loaded, for easy switching between, say, legal and letter size. Alternatively, you can load the same paper in both drawers and set the printer to switch to the second drawer when the first runs out. Beyond that, the WF-3540 includes a duplexer for two-sided printing, and a single-sheet manual feed. I have good results printing paper from the trays. When it comes to other things, not so good. One would think the rear slot would take thicker paper, but not so in my experience. The top tray was best, and not that great. I tried to do wedding invitations from the top tray, and you have to put just the right amount in to keep it from jamming. According to other reviews, I'm supposed to blown away by the picture quality. I'm not at all, even with paper made for it. Actually, the paint jet from the 90s this one replaced did much better on any paper, no matter what settings I used. I know you can get inexpensive third-party ink for these, but I have not tried them. I don't print enough to where it would make a difference.

Scanning:
For scanning, the printer offers a letter-size flatbed and a 30-sheet automatic document feeder (ADF) that can handle up to legal-size pages. AND SINCE THE ADF ALSO DUPLEXES,, scanning one side and then turning the page over, you can use it in combination with duplex printing to copy both single- and double-sided documents to your choice of single- or double-sided copies. Don't let any MFP make it to your short list unless it can do two-sided scanning and copying. Think going paperless document archiving. Scanning can be initiated from the printer through USB to a computer, initiated from the printer across the network to a PC, or initiate from a computer to scan to a folder on your computer. The Epson scanning utility integrates with a third party program named Abbey Fine Print. This program does OCR VERY well. I got tired of Intuit's arrogance and pricing for my invoices. I almost ordered new until I realized how much they were charging me for an invoice. I could make it for 1/10th the price myself, so I did. I scanned it into a document, changed what I wanted, and I'll never run out again. There is something wrong with this picture when I can print them for less than they can...by 10 times! I also an easily make changes now, which I did.

Copying:
The Automatic Document Feeder works very well to copy multiple sheets. This is a DUPLEX COPIER!!!, and it works very well too. It takes a little time to figure out the copies and two-sided options from the touch screen, but I don't know one that doesn't.

Faxing:
- As you might already guess, DUPLEX FAXING!!! No more making copies of the back pages of documents before faxing. Another reason you want to make sure one of those 90's technology printers doesn't make it to your short list.

Summary:
So far it sounds perfect, but it's not. The printing of graphics IMO is not that good. When it comes to duplex scanning from the software, it is not very straight forward and inconsistent based on file type. To change the fax to auto-answer, you need to either scroll way down the setup menu, or do it from a separate fax app on your PC. Either way, you will never make it in time. The number of rings is only settable from the PC as far as I can tell. If you remember from the 90s how you had one integrated screen where you could set thing up or use them? Well this isn't it. It's more like guess what app to use, and then guess what is behind the menu. Then make a text file with directions and put it on your desktop so you don't have to figure out the unintuitive later. I don't like these aspects, but there is something worse, and that is the printer doesn't have these capabilities at all. That's why this one wins. Unless you're into heavier stock, photos, T-Shirts, or printing on CDs, I don't know how to beat this printer at anything even remotely close to this price.
